2022 Wyndham Championship leaderboard: Brandon Wu, Sungjae Im co-lead as inclement weather suspends Round 3

Weather wreaked havoc at Sedgefield Country Club on Saturday, causing Round 3 to spill into Sunday

Mother Nature rained on the Wyndham Championship parade Saturday as play was suspended not once but twice, leading to players having to finish Round 3 on Sunday. With the final group in the 11th fairway, roughly 26 holes will need to be completed in what will be a sprint to the finish in the tournament at hand and, more importantly, the regular season as a whole.

Leading the pack are Brendon Wu and Sungjae Im, both of whom stand at 12 under and one stroke clear of Tom Kim and John Huh. Wu finished his Saturday in style as he holed out for eagle on the par-4 11th on his final swing of the day to catapult himself to the top of the leaderboard alongside Im.

Only two strokes adrift are Anirban Lahiri, Russell Henley, Davis Riley, Ryan Moore and Brian Stuard. While the majority of these men are well inside the postseason as it stands, Moore and Stuard's eyes are surely drawn to the FedEx Cup Playoffs picture as they entered the week outside the top 125.

They are not alone, as Max McGreev, Chesson Hadley and Justin Lower will all need strong Sunday performances to play themselves into the field next week. With extra golf, playoff aspirations and careers on the line, the final day at Sedgefield Country Club is sure to be one to remember.

The leaders

T1. Sungjae Im and Brendon Wu (-12)

Im has been the most controlled player in the field through the first 70 percent of this tournament, and one would expect him to keep his cool and calm demeanor tomorrow. While he has not had his best stuff both off the tee and with his irons in hand, he has continued to find ways to score around this Donald Ross design and sits atop the leaderboard alongside Wu.

The South Korean has experienced an odd year, but with a victory he would see his name creep inside the top 10 of the FedEx Cup standings. His fellow countryman, Kim, has made headlines this week -- and rightfully so -- but it is sometimes easy to forget that Im is still only 24 years of age and possesses a fantastic opportunity to notch his third career victory on the PGA Tour.

T3. John Huh and Tom Kim (-11)

T5. Anirban Lahiri, Russell Henley, Davis Riley, Ryan Moore and Brian Stuard (-10)

11. Aaron Wise (-9)

There is plenty to dissect from the chasing pack, yet Stuard is an intriguing name to dive deeper into. Beginning the week 137th in the season-long race, the 39-year-old was in search of some much-needed magic. He had missed his last nine cuts on the PGA Tour, and to this point has been able to pull a rabbit out of a hat as he is currently projected to move up to 120th in the FedEx Cup standings.

"Honestly, not much at all really," said Stuard on Thursday regarding the postseason pressure. "I don't have much to lose. I'm kind of not in a real good spot, so just trying to figure out how to play some good golf again and see what happens."

Saying this on Thursday is one thing, but the intensity has since been turned up a notch. It will be interesting to see if Stuard will be able to keep this laidback approach now that he has played himself into a chance of qualifying for the St. Jude Championship next week.

Early morning heartbreak

Austin Smotherman began the week firmly on the FedEx Cup bubble as he stood at No. 125 in the season-long race. Unable to finish his second round on Friday due to darkness, Smotherman returned to the golf course Saturday morning at 1 under and with a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-4 eighth. 

Unable to convert, all he needed to do was make par on his final hole to secure a weekend tee time and more than likely a PGA Tour card for next season. If only golf was that easy, as the PGA Tour rookie carded a double bogey on the ninth, moved the cut line to 1 under and booked his trip to the Korn Ferry Tour Playoffs where he will hope to regain full-time status on the PGA Tour.

Bubble boys heading into Sunday

Smotherman's early dismissal has opened the door for a few players, with Rickie Fowler being one of them. While Fowler is an omission from the weekend after missing the cut by a single stroke, he still has an opportunity to finish 125th in the FedEx Cup. He will likely need Justin Lower to have a poor Sunday, which is a difficult outcome to root for given the 33-year-old rookie's path to the PGA Tour.

There is still so much that could happen in this golf tournament, and because of this, it may be fruitful to take some chances. Lahiri is of considerable notice given where he has played his best golf in 2022. A runner-up at TPC Sawgrass and finishing inside the top 10 at TPC Potomac, the man from India leads the field this week in strokes gained tee to green. Ranking third in both strokes gained off the tee and strokes gained approach, Lahiri has gradually improved on the greens each day and should continue to do so on Sunday.

Round 3 to resume Sunday morning

The third round of the Wyndham Championship will resume tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. as only four groups have completed play on Saturday due to weather. The leaderboard is crowded as two men sit atop with roughly 26 holes to play:

Play may not be resuming after all

Once the players returned to the golf course, a large bolt of lightning shot across the 15th hole and stopped rules officials in their tracks. It may be best we just wrap things up early tomorrow morning and get out of here for the day from a golf standpoint.

Play expected to resume at 6:40 p.m.

The second weather delay is scheduled to conclude in the next 30 minutes. As it stands, Brendon Wu and Sungjae Im are tied for the lead at 12 under with Tom Kim and John Huh one stroke behind. There are a number of names within four strokes of the lead and these next few holes may have a lasting impact on the tournament.

Play has been suspended yet again

For the second time today, inclement weather has rolled into the area. Officially suspended at 4:15 p.m. players have been shuttled into the clubhouse and are off the golf course. Sunset is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. as the final group still has eight holes to play. Brandon Wu had just made eagle to reach 12 under alongside Sungjae Im at the top of the leaderboard.

There are a number of international players at the top of the leaderboard at the moment. While Sungjae Im is securely on the Presidents Cup team next month, Tom Kim and Anirban Lahiri may be drawing the attention of the head man with the status of their game.

There are now four at the top of the leaderboard

Sungjae Im, Tom Kim, Ryan Moore and Anirban Lahiri are all at 11 under as things stand. Lahiri is especially interesting given where he has played well this season -- TPC Sawgrass and TPC Potomac. Those two courses possess plenty of similarities to Sedgefield CC and it is showing.
