Jordan Poyer had three interceptions to lead Oregon State over Washington State (US Presswire)

OREGON STATE WON: Cornerback Jordan Poyer's three interceptions highlighted a strifling defensive effort as No. 14 Oregon State (4-0) beat Washington State (2-4) 19-6 in Corvallis on Saturday. The Beavers held the Cougars to just 254 yards and 13 first downs and forced five turnovers. OSU needed the help as its offense was stymied by an inspired WSU defensive unit. Beavers quarterback Sean Mannion was 24-of-41 for 250 yards and a touchdown, but he threw three interceptions. Jeff Tuel came on in relief of <player idref=iday for the Cougars and he managed 126 passing yards, but WSU couldn't get anything going most of the day.

WHY OREGON STATE WON: Oregon State successfully played keep-away from WSU, holding the ball for a remarkable 39 minutes. As a result, the Cougars offense could never get on track or in rhythm. Neither WSU quarterback was effective and the Beavers secondary easily blanketed the Cougars wideouts. Although Oregon State was also subpar offensively, it controlled the ball and made just enough plays for this game to never really be in doubt.

WHEN OREGON STATE WON: An Andrew Furney 32-yard field goal made this a one-score game midway through the fourth quarter, but Oregon State responded with a 14-play, 86-yard drive that culminated in a 1-yard Tyler Anderson plunge to put the game out of reach. Washington State was unable to respond and the Beavers had their win.

WHAT OREGON STATE WON: It's possible the Beavers were in letdown mode following their emotional road win against Arizona last weekend. Recent OSU teams might've crumbled against WSU's determined effort, but the Beavers defense saved the day. As a result, OSU is now 4-0 and still in position to challenge for the Pac-12 North title.

WHAT WASHINGTON STATE LOST: One of these days, WSU will put it all together and come up with Mike Leach's first big win. For once, the Cougars were clicking on defense, but the offense couldn't take advantage and, as a result, their bowl prospects appear to be dwindling.
