2025 college basketball transfer portal: Live updates, entries, commitments, news powered by 247Sports
Live updates and analysis as the college basketball transfer portal opens amid March Madness action
The NCAA transfer portal cycle for the 2025 college basketball season opened March 24 and will close on Tuesday, April 22. As the transfer cycle begins, expect major movement across the sport. Top players are already being linked to the portal, and NIL remains a driving factor in player decisions. This could be the most talent-rich portal cycle yet -- and with more money in play than ever before, no player or program is off limits.
The 2025 cycle brings a few key changes. Most notably, the portal opens a week later than it did in 2024, no longer overlapping with the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. This shift means 75% of tournament teams will already be eliminated by the time players can officially enter.
Additionally, the transfer window has been shortened from 45 days to 30. The move is part of an effort to create more stability and predictability for college programs navigating roster management, recruiting and NIL negotiations. By closing the portal before the grassroots recruiting calendar kicks off in May, the NCAA hopes to reduce overlap and roster uncertainty.

Kansas star enters transfer portal
Kansas big man Flory Bidunga is entering the transfer portal, 247Sports reported on Saturday. The former No. 14 overall player in the 2024 recruiting cycle by 247Sports averaged 5.9 points and 5.4 rebounds in 16.3 minutes per game. Bidunga appeared in 34 games (six starts) during the 2024-25 season for the Jayhawks. With Bidunga, Hunter Dickinson and KJ Adams departing the program, Kansas will have work to do to replace most of its frontcourt production.
St. John's star RJ Luis Jr. enters transfer portal
St. John's star RJ Luis Jr. is declaring for the 2025 NBA Draft and entering the transfer portal, his agent told ESPN. The Big East Player of the Year is expected to make at least $1.5 million in NIL earnings if he opts to return to college basketball, sources told CBS Sports' Matt Norlander.
Despite helping cut a double-digit lead to two, Luis did not play in the final 4:56 of the Red Storm's 75-66 loss Arkansas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. During that stretch, they were outscored 11-4 and missed eight of their final nine shots from the field.

Donovan Dent headed to UCLA
New Mexico star transfer Donovan Dent, one of the most complete guards in the country this past season with the Lobos, has committed to play for Mick Cronin and the UCLA Bruins. Dent entered the portal earlier this week and didn't take much time with his decision.
The commitment gives the Bruins one of the most versatile guards in the transfer portal class and a potential future first-round pick. Dent averaged 20.4 points and 6.4 assists per game for New Mexico this last season and earned Mountain West Player of the Year honors. That's a distinction that's recently flourished in the portal, after MWC Player of the Year the season prior, former New Mexico star JT Toppin, left the league for Texas Tech and the Big 12 and won Player of the Year there this past season.
Dent has connections to UCLA, in addition to being from Cali, that may have helped in its push: UCLA guard Eric Freeny is a former Corono Centennial teammate of Dent's in Southern Cal.
Very few players will have the immediate impact Dent likely will make for the Bruins next season. A day-one starter on a team that clearly plans to commit resources to surrounding coach Mick Cronin with a viable roster to contend at or near the top in the Big Ten next season.
The Donovan Dent sweepstakes are heating up
Where will Donovan Dent land? That's the biggest question swirling in the transfer portal right now and is by far the player who's receiving the most attention when we write about the portal. The former New Mexico star is currently ranked No. 2 in our early portal rankings and is naturally being pursued by the blue bloods.
Early buzz pointed to Duke as a strong contender, but sources now suggest that's off the table.
Then came Kentucky. For a moment, the Wildcats seemed like the frontrunner and were dominating the Dent rumor mill. But by Thursday afternoon, the narrative shifted.
Enter UCLA. The Bruins have quietly emerged as a serious player for Dent. There's a natural connection here — Dent's former high school teammate, Eric Freeny, is currently on UCLA's roster. Plus, Dent's roots run deep in Southern California, with his hometown just outside of Los Angeles. Some 247Sports sources now believe the Bruins may actually hold the upper hand. This is looking like a true toss-up.
One thing's certain — a decision is coming soon. Stay tuned and read more transfer portal intel here at 247Sports, where we have fresh updates daily.
