The United States Men's National Team face another difficult test on Tuesday at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and this one against Iran in their Group B finale is pass or fail. Draws against experienced Wales and England teams were positive results, but Iran's surprisingly dominant 2-0 victory against Wales on Friday made this a must-win match for the USA. Iran moves on along with England with a win or draw, despite losing to the Three Lions 6-2 in their first match. The teams have met just once in official competition, when they were in the same group in the 1998 World Cup. Iran won their meeting 2-1 as both teams finished at the bottom of a group behind Germany and Yugoslavia. Iran have never advanced in five previous appearances, while the USMNT have reached the knockout stage six times in their 10 World Cups.

Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET at Al Thumama Stadium in Doha, Qatar. Caesars Sportsbook lists the USMNT as -114 favorites (risk $114 to win $100) on the money line in its latest Iran vs. USA odds. Iran are priced as +310 underdogs, a draw is listed at +250 and the over/under for total goals scored is 2.5. Why you should back the USMNT

Wales and England both failed to score from the run of play, with Gareth Bale's equalizer in the opener coming on a penalty. The USA back line has allowed 15 shots (six on target) in two matches against a pair of top-20 teams, including No. 5 England. Now, No. 20 Iran come in off a big victory but also have a dreadful loss. England scored six goals against Iran, and while the USMNT don't have that firepower, players like Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna, Timothy Weah and Josh Sargent all are familiar with scoring goals. Weah scored the goal against Wales, on a perfect feed from Pulisic.

Pulisic nearly found the net against England, blasting a shot off the post. The Americans should have no trouble controlling the ball against an Iran team that averaged less than 30% possession over the first two games. The Persians also will be sitting back to play for a draw, so the midfield of Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah and Tyler Adams will have plenty of time to find holes in the Iran back line. While the Iranians piled up shots against Wales, they didn't light the scoreboard until the 98th minute, and the youthful Americans should be able to match the impressive work rate of Iran.

Why you should back Iran

Manager Carlos Queiroz, the Portuguese former Real Madrid boss, is back for a second stint with Iran, and leading them in a third World Cup. He emphasizes hard work and defense, and he has a number of veterans to execute the approach perfectly. Captain Ehsan Hajsafi, who is fourth on the nation's list for all-time appearances with 123, is the veteran of the group. Ali Karimi and Ahmad Nourollahi are typically tasked with clogging the midfield and distributing to Iran's experienced and talented attackers, who can strike as soon as they get the chance.

Mehdi Taremi scored both goals against England, while Sardar Azmoun had a golden chance glance off the post, and Karim Ansarifard made an impact off the bench. They are the only three true forwards on the roster, and only one might be out there Tuesday, but they have 100 combined goals over 194 international appearances. Iran dominated AFC World Cup qualifying, going 14-1-3 over the two rounds, with a stunning 48-8 goal advantage over the 18 matches. Azmoun scored nine goals in qualifying, while Taremi and Ansarifard scored seven apiece.
