USMNT vs. Colombia score: USA ends two-game January camp with listless scoreless draw

It was an international break to forget for the USMNT

While the match started quickly, the United States and Colombia played to a tepid 0-0 draw to close out January Camp. Missed chances on both sides were the name of the game as Paul Arriola's 50th national team cap wasn't celebrated with a victory. Paxten Aaronson had a few good chances at goal in his national team debut -- following in the footsteps of his brother Brenden and becoming the eighth pair of brothers to both earn senior caps for the national team -- but he wasn't able to finish his chances.

Colombia picked apart the USMNT defense and while it was anchored by the experience of Aaron Long and Walker Zimmerman, neither looked comfortable. Matthew Hoppe got the start for the United States up top and his performance summed up the team's overall level quite well. He was constantly in space but never able to get the final ball where he wanted, so it ended up being a disappointing showing.

It's never good to end a camp without a victory, but with interim manager Anthony Hudson putting together this roster late and with so many changes in the lineups, growing pains were to be expected. There were bright showings and players like Aaronson and John Tolkin will benefit from these matches but there is still a long way to go for the USMNT for building out depth behind the first team.

It's a 0-0 draw

It's a better performance than the Serbia match, especially with the short turnaround and the team will be happy to keep a clean sheet but Colombia had plenty of chances. Neither team was able to find a finishing touch in the match but there were promising attacks. John Tolkin was likely the player who improved his stock the most with a strong 80 minutes before going off and that alone makes the camp a success considering the lack of depth behind Antonee Robinson at left back.

Fabra had a chance to seal it

He drives his shot wide left and now will receive a bit of treatment so that he can get a water break. That is likely it for the match as the whistle is coming any minute now.

Aaronson is fouled but Colombia are allowed to play on before their attack is stopped due to the offside flag. Three minutes left in the match.

Coming in for Tolkin, Gressel will join the match with DeJaun Jones shifting to left back. Nine minutes still remain for the United States to grab a winner.

What a ball from Acosta

Threading the needle, Acosta found Hoppe on the wing and he won a corner. Acosta's delivery was a good one but Colombia dealt with it to go on the counter attack.

Long and Zimmerman have exited the match with a new central pairing entering in Rodgers and Jalen Neal who started the Serbia match. That brings us to 12 debuts during this camp so far.

Almost 60 minutes in and Colombia are targeting DeJaun Jones' half of the pitch. Arriola plays in Ferreira but the ball gets stuck at the FC Dallas forward's feet. That will likely be his last contribution of the night as Brandon Vazquez is getting ready.

A strong claim by Johnson

Cambindo was bearing down but he came out quickly to clear the danger. Still a similar beginning to how the first half ended but neither team is able to connect cleanly in the final third.

A few changes at the half

For the USMNT, Williamson will depart the match with Sonora coming in providing a bit of a different look and fresh legs in midfield. Colombia are changing keepers with Montero being withdrawn for Chunga and Arango also leaving the match for Cambindo.

This has been a game that bypassed the midfield

Kellyn Acosta and Eryk Williamson haven't seen much of the ball yet and the attack hasn't been able to make their chances count but the defense is doing just enough to keep Colombia at bay. Jesus Ferreira has been particularly disappointing and the game could be calling for Brandon Vazquez to find an opener. Colombia has been adept at creating chances but they need to be more clinical.

Colombia is getting the better of the United States

While the USMNT was pushing the pace to begin the game, Colombia has settled and are giving the defense fits. There hasn't been a goal yet in the match but if one comes, it'll likely be for Colombia.

This one is to Valoyes for catching Arriola from behind as the United States had a good attacking chance. Ferreira, Hoppe, and Aaronson weren't able to turn it into a goal.

20 mintues in

It has been a fun and open match so far with each team having their chances. There has been six shots with only Aaronson testing a keeper in the early going. With most of the United States squad in the midst of preseason, it will be interesting to see if this tempo can continue for the entire half or if Colombia will use it to begin forcing mistakes.

DeJuan Jones wins a corner kick

Again the United States are able to get forward with ease as Arriola springs the attack. There's a bit of a tangle in the center but the corner is eventually cleared for a throw in. Aaronson had another excellent chance but a Colombia defender comes up with a timely block.

Only six minutes into the match, Hoppe brought down the ball playing in Paxten Aaaronson whose shot was too tame to trouble the keeper. But already a better attacking sequence than how the match against Serbia began.

Paxten Aaronson and John Tolkin will also debut

While this is a more seasoned USMNT lineup, there will be some debuts to watch in left back John Tolkin and attacking midfielder Paxten Aaronson. Tolkin has been a strong performer in the New York Red Bulls defense and came close to making the World Cup squad while Aaronson recently moved to Eintracht Frankfurt from the Philadelphia Union. Following the path of his brother, Brenden Aaronson, a strong showing in this match will go a long way for Paxten.
