Samberg snapped a six-game point drought with his helper on a Nate Schmidt go-ahead goal in the third period. The helper was Samberg's fourth since the start of December. Samberg emerged as a solid third-pairing defenseman last season, racking up eight points, a plus-10 rating, 91 hits and 93 blocked shots in 63 games. The 24-year-old is now locked in at a reasonable cap hit and will likely fill a similar role for the next two seasons. He'll be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights at the end of this contract.

Considering Samberg is pointless in 21 straight contests and has been frequently left out of the lineup, it certainly doesn't come as a surprise that he was once again a healthy scratch Tuesday. Samberg was previously labeled as day-to-day but the fact that he isn't cleared for contact doesn't bode well for a short-term absence. Even when healthy, the Minnesota native is far from a lock for a spot in the lineup and figures to frequently find himself watching from the press box.
