The 49ers cut 21 players and traded another to get their roster to 53 players.

S Colin Jones (2nd year, 6th round, TCU) was traded to Carolina for a seventh-round draft pick, according to multiple reports. He was used solely on special teams last year after being drafted in the sixth round out of TCU.

Notable cuts: QB Josh Johnson (fifth year, free agent, Univ of San Diego) -- Coach Jim Harbaugh's pupil at the University of San Diego could not beat out second-year pro Scott Tolzien for the final QB spot. He showed up well in the final preseason game, connecting on 9 of 14 passes for 125 yards and 2 TD, but it was too little, too late. RB Rock Cartwright (11th year, free agent, Kansas State) -- Cartwright was brought in specifically for special teams, but Anthony Dixon's added versatility and improved understanding of the 49ers concepts made him less expendable. Cartwright thanked the 49ers for the opportunity on Twitter.
