Patriots' Bailey Zappe: Returns as backup
Zappe will back up Mac Jones on Sunday against the Eagles after signing with the Patriots' 53-man roster Saturday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
The Patriots placed Matt Corral on the exempt/left squad list in a corresponding move, seemingly ending a confusing two-week period where it appeared Zappe and promising rookie Malik Cunningham had both lost the backup job without a clear option for the role on the active roster. Zappe wasn't particularly impressive during the preseason, especially in the team's final game, but the second-year quarterback does have more in-game experience than any of the other options for New England and will likely remain the backup moving forward.

Bailey Zappe: Joins New England's practice squad
Zappe agreed to a deal Wednesday with the Patriots' practice squad, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Zappe had offers to join seven other practice squads but opted to stay with New England. It's a sensible decision for the second-year quarterback. Not only is Zappe already familiar with the Patriots' system, but the only quarterback on the Patriots' 53-man roster at the moment. Mac Jones. Zappe is functionally the backup, while joining another organization's practice squad would have pushed him down to a third-string role at best.

Meanwhile, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reports that Malik Cunningham is also slated to be waived, temporarily leaving Mac Jones as the team's only QB. Per Karen Guregian of The Springfield Republican, the Patriots are hoping get both Zappe and Cunningham on their practice squad.
