The Buccaneers released Laird on Monday, Greg Auman of Fox Sports reports.
Laird was the fifth running back on Tampa Bay's depth chart, rendering this move relatively unsurprising. While he was unable to secure a role on the 53-man roster, it is still possible for him to get an opportunity on the team's practice squad. If that does not come to fruition, the 28-year-old will look for a fresh start elsewhere. He primarily played a depth running back role in Miami during his first three seasons.

Buccaneers' Patrick Laird: Breaks off impressive run Saturday
Laird rushed three times for 27 yards and brought in his only target for one yard in the Buccaneers' 26-20 preseason win over the Ravens on Saturday night.
Laird logged the second-fewest snaps among the Buccaneers' running backs, but he put them to good use with a 21-yard scamper. The fourth-year pro is a versatile asset that can contribute as a runner, receiver and in multiple facets on special teams. Laird rushed nine times for 20 yards in the Buccaneers' 13-6 preseason win over the Jets on Saturday night.
Laird logged 19 snaps and paced the Buccaneers' backfield in carries. The fourth-year pro is battling undrafted rookies Sean Tucker and Ronnie Brown for a roster spot, and Laird could potentially have the inside track to a backup role due to his contributions on special teams. All the players in the competition, Laird included, will get another opportunity to make their case in the preseason finale versus the Ravens on Saturday night.

Buccaneers' Patrick Laird: Heavily featured in finale
Laird rushed 12 times for 35 yards and secured all three targets for 19 yards in the Buccaneers' 27-10 preseason loss to the Colts on Saturday night.
Laird was thought to be a borderline camp body when he signed Aug. 15, but the combination of his extended look Saturday and the lingering absence of Giovani Bernard (ankle) arguably leaves open the possibility the Buccaneers are at least contemplating the former as a possible No. 4 back. Greg Auman of The Athletic notes Bernard is guaranteed $895,000 if he's still with the team Week 1, and Laird is also three years younger than his 30-year-old veteran teammate while boasting solid pass-catching skills in his own right. The immediate fate of both players will be known soon enough considering Tuesday's 4pm ET 53-man roster deadline, and Laird is still probably a much likelier candidate for the practice squad than the active roster.

Patrick Laird: Waived by Buccaneers
Laird was waived by the Buccaneers on Tuesday, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.
Laird failed to make the Buccaneers' final roster after joining the team mid-camp this summer. The running back produced 35 rushing yards on 13 carries and caught four passes for 20 yards while playing in two games this preseason. Laird is a top candidate to join the Buccaneers' practice squad if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

The Buccaneers signed Laird on Monday, independent NFL reporter Dov Kleiman reports.
Laird appeared in six games last year for Miami before landing on injured reserve with an MCL injury. Laird sustained an MCL sprain in the first quarter of Sunday's win over the Giants and will be forced to miss at least three games by virtue of his placement on IR. Since the Dolphins have a Week 14 bye, the 26-year-old won't be eligible to return until the regular-season finale Jan. 9 against the Patriots.

Laird suffered the injury in the first quarter of Sunday's win over the Giants and was quickly ruled out after being examined in the medical tent. With the 26-year-old expected to be sidelined for multiple weeks, it's likely that he will be placed on injured reserve to open up a roster spot. Laird has played double-digit offensive snaps just twice this season, so his absence shouldn't impact the Dolphins' offensive rotations.

Laird has been ruled out from Sunday's game against the Giants.
Laird suffered the injury in the first quarter and walked off the field under his own power after being looked at by trainers. He then went into the medical tent and ultimately the locker room before being quickly ruled out. The severity of the injury is not clear at this point, but Laird's next chance to return will be Week 15 as the Dolphins have a Week 14 bye.
