  • Keith Marshall: Waived with injury settlement

Marshall (knee) was waived Wednesday after agreeing to an injury settlement with the Redskins, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.

Marshall showed promise in practices at times during his two seasons in the organization, but the running back has yet to make his NFL debut after landing on injured reserve in both 2016 and 2017. There's no timeline for when he's expected to be fully recovered from the torn patellar tendon he suffered last July.

  • Redskins' Keith Marshall: Still not practicing

Marshall (kneecap) didn't participate in the Redskins' mandatory minicamp, Kareem Copeland of The Washington Post reports.

Marshall went down early in training camp last year with a torn patellar tendon, one of the worst possible injuries for a football player. He lit up the 2016 NFL Combine with a 4.31-second 40-yard dash time at 219 pounds, but the sixth-round pick struggled to stay healthy in college and hasn't fared any better in the NFL. Even if he eventually gets healthy, Marshall will be an extreme long shot to make the 53-man roster among a deep group of running backs in Washington.

  • Redskins' Keith Marshall: Lands on injured reserve

Marshall (knee) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.

This marks the second time in as many years that Marshall has landed on IR before the regular season began. He tore his patella tendon and was waived on Monday. Now that he's cleared waivers, he'll be able to remain with the Redskins as he recovers and looks towards next year.

  • Keith Marshall: Waived by Redskins

Marshall (knee) was released by the Redskins with an injury designation Monday, Stephen Czarda of Redskins.com reports.

Marshall, a seventh-round pick in 2016, has seen his first two NFL seasons derailed by injuries. Last year, the speedster missed the entire campaign after suffering an elbow injury during the preseason. Following a subsequent return to health, Marshall was reportedly doing well prior to suffering a season-ending torn right patella tendon in practice over the weekend. In a roster move corresponding to Marshall's release, the Redskins signed fellow running back Kenny Hilliard.

  • Redskins' Keith Marshall: Out for season with torn patella tendon

Marshall has been diagnosed with a torn right patella tendon and will miss the rest of the season, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.

It's another tough blow for Marshall, who also missed his rookie season with an elbow injury. He'll start the long road to recovery and should be placed on injured reserve shortly if the Redskins don't end up waiving him with an injury settlement.

  • Redskins' Keith Marshall: Carted off with apparent knee injury

Marshall was carted off the field with an apparent right knee injury during Saturday's practice, ESPN's John Keim reports.

This is another incident in a string of bad injury luck for Marshall, who missed his rookie season with an elbow injury and also suffered a torn ACL during his college career. More updates on Marshall will be available once he's examined by the team's medical staff, but the fact that he was carted off Saturday is certainly concerning. He was considered on the bubble in terms of a roster spot entering camp, so additional missed time does not bode well for Marshall.

  • Redskins' Keith Marshall: Could be headed for practice squad

Marshall is a candidate for the practice squad, CSN Mid-Atlantic's Rich Tandler reports.

With Matt Jones likely to be traded or released and Rob Kelley, Samaje Perine and Chris Thompson all locks to make the team, Marshall and Mack Brown will have to compete for a roster spot that may not exist. Marshall was selected in the seventh round of last year's draft and spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve with an elbow injury, but his top-notch athleticism -- he ran a 4.31 40-yard dash at 219 pounds -- makes him an interesting long-term project to keep on the practice squad. While lacking in athletic upside, Brown likely will enter training camp ahead of Marshall on the depth chart, after playing nine games last season and ripping off a 61-yard touchdown on one of his eight carries.

  • Redskins' Keith Marshall: Says he's healthy and ready to compete

Marshall (elbow) said he is healthy and ready to compete for a roster spot, the Redskins' official website reports.

A top recruit whose college career was marred by knee injuries, Marshall pushed his way into the sixth round of last year's draft after leading all running backs at the NFL Scouting Combine in both the 40-yard dash (4.31) and bench press (25 rep). He seemingly had a shot to earn a role in a shaky Washington backfield before he suffered a season-ending elbow injury in the team's third preseason game. Undrafted rookie Robert Kelley eventually seized the lead job from Matt Jones, with Chris Thompson doing his usual strong work on passing downs. Marshall will thus be left to compete with Jones, Mack Brown and at least one rookie for what likely will be one or two roster spots. Depending on what the Redskins do in the upcoming draft, Marshall could find himself on the outside looking in, though his freakish athleticism would seemingly at least make him a good candidate for the practice squad.
