It is unclear what exactly is going on behind the scenes, but Blake's designation makes room for the Giants to use his spot on the 90-man roster for another player. He is competing for a depth cornerback and special teams' role on the final roster, so a quick return will be helpful for his chances.

Giants' Valentino Blake: Healthy again
Blake (back) played in Monday's preseason game against the Browns, Dan Duggan of NJ.com reports.
Blake is expected to earn his meal ticket as a special teams asset, and the Giants showed that when he played in a team-high 10 kicking snaps Monday. He has played a considerable amount of defensive snaps in his first five seasons, but the Giants have a deep defensive-back corps, so he'll have a tougher time earning time there.

Giants' Valentino Blake: Nursing back injury
Blake missed Wednesday's practice due to a back injury, James Kratch of NJ.com reports.
Blake -- who the Giants ultimately opted not to place on the Physically Unable to Perform list to begin training camp, despite earlier reports from head coach Ben McAdoo saying otherwise -- is dealing with an aggravation of the back injury that caused the team to consider placing him on the PUP list in the first place. It isn't clear when he'll be back in action.

Giants' Valentino Blake: Added to Giants defense
Blake signed with the Giants on Monday.
Blake started all 16 games in 2015 for the Steelers, compiling 76 tackles and two interceptions, but was relegated to a more suitable reserve role with the Titans last year, when he finished with 42 stops. In joining the Giants, Blake figures to provide experienced depth to the team's secondary and special teams units.

Titans' Antwon Blake: Lands in Tennessee
The Titans and Blake agreed to a contract Thursday, Jason Wolf of The Tennessean reports.
One of six players to notch at least 75 tackles and 11 passes defended last season, Blake nonetheless posted a decent stat line, despite being a detriment to the Steelers' pass defense. Upon moving from Pittsburgh to Tennessee, he'll join a cornerback crew composed of Jason McCourty (groin), Perrish Cox, and Brice McCain.

Blake co-led the team (Ross Cockrell) with 11 passes defended in 2015. He totaled 76 tackles (six solo), including one sack and a forced fumble, and had two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. An unrestricted free agent, Blake set single season career highs in nearly every defensive category, recording his first sack and touchdown. He is one of eight defensive backs, 13 defensive players, and 29 players overall whose contract with Pittsburgh is up.

Steelers' Antwon Blake: Team-high nine tackles on Sunday
Blake recorded a team-high nine tackles (eight solo) in the Steelers' 38-35 win against the Raiders on Sunday.
Blake now leads Pittsburgh with 48 solo tackles, and his 58 total tackles is second only to Lawrence Timmons (63) on the team. Blake also had a forced a fumble, the second of his career, and will look to add to that total in Week 10 against Cleveland, which has a league worst 12 fumbles this season.
