Chiefs add to wide receiver corps, sign former top-15 pick who hasn't played in four years

The Chiefs have shuffled their wide receiver room this offseason, adding former Steelers star JuJu Smith-Schuster while letting reserves Byron Pringle and Demarcus Robinson test free agency. On Tuesday, they added another notable name to the group, signing former first-round pick Corey Coleman, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. Coleman, 27, spent 2021 out of football and hasn't played an NFL game in four years, but he's now set to compete for a backup role in Kansas City.

Last seen with the Giants from 2018-2020, Coleman was selected No. 15 overall by the Browns in the 2016 draft. He reunites with former Cleveland standout and fellow Baylor product Josh Gordon in Kansas City, likely to battle Gordon and other backups like Justin Watson and Daurice Fountain for a reserve job.

Coleman's move to the Chiefs comes after he spent the entire 2021 season as a free agent, serving a six-game suspension for violation of the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy at the start of the year. Prior to that, he spent three seasons on and off the Giants' practice squad, logging just five catches in eight games but at one point taking over as the team's primary kick returner.

Injuries plagued him during his short-lived run with the Browns, limiting him to 19 games in two years. After just two years in Cleveland, Coleman requested a trade and was subsequently dealt to the Bills, who released him a month later. He also spent several weeks with the Patriots during the 2018 offseason, before landing in New York.
