  • Jake Layman: Continuing career abroad

Layman signed a one-year contract Wednesday with Spanish club Basquet Manresa. After failing to secure a roster spot with the Celtics after joining the club on an Exhibit 10 deal ahead of training camp, Layman has elected to continue his career overseas rather than heading to the G League, where he likely would have had to settle for a much lower salary. A 2016 second-round pick, Layman saw NBA action in each of the past six seasons, averaging 4.8 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.5 assists in 12.8 minutes per game over 243 regular-season appearances.

  • Celtics' Jake Layman: Let go by Boston

The Celtics waived Layman on Saturday, Keith Smith of Spotrac.com reports. Layman averaged 2.4 points and 1.1 rebounds in 6.8 minutes across 34 games for Minnesota last season. After appearing in just two games for the Celtics this preseason, the 28-year-old forward will look to join his fourth team ahead of his seventh season in the NBA.

  • Celtics' Jake Layman: Joining Celtics for camp

Layman signed a non-guaranteed training camp contract with the Celtics on Monday, Keith Smith of Spotrac.com reports. Layman appeared in 34 games with the Timberwolves last season, averaging 2.4 points and 1.1 rebounds in 6.8 minutes per contest. The forward had his most productive NBA season in 2018-19, averaging 7.6 points and 3.1 rebounds across 18.7 minutes per game in 71 appearances with the Timberwolves.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Scores in double figures

Layman notched 10 points (3-3 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 3-4 FT), three rebounds and one steal over 17 minutes during Sunday's 124-120 loss to the Bulls. Layman hasn't been a significant part of the rotation since the start of the calendar year, but the Timberwolves opted to lean more on their bench players in Sunday's regular-season finale. He should revert to his normal role during Tuesday's play-in game against the Clippers.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Shifts to bench

Layman will come off the bench Monday against the Celtics. Layman received his first start of the season Thursday but will quickly return to a bench role. He had 13 points (6-11 FG, 1-5 3Pt), seven rebounds, two steals and one block in that contest, and he should see extended minutes again Monday since the Timberwolves still have a significant portion of their rotation in the COVID-19 protocols.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Draws first start of season

Layman will start Thursday's contest against the Jazz. With Anthony Edwards, Taurean Prince and Josh Okogie all in COVID-19 protocols, Layman will draw his first start of the season. Across 12 appearances this year, he's averaging 1.1 points in 5.2 minutes per game, but he's expected to have a larger role against Utah.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Scores just two points in opener

Layman scored two points (1-3 FG) in five minutes in Wednesday's season-opening win over Houston. A year ago, Layman was in contention for a starting role at power forward. After a disappointing 2020-21 season (averaging just 5.1 points and 1.5 rebounds in 13.9 minutes), he's buried on the bench.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Doesn't play Thursday

Layman (coach's decision) didn't play during Thursday's win over Golden State. Layman went unused for a sixth straight matchup. The forward last appeared April 18 against the Clippers and posted two points and one assist in four minutes of action. Layman is currently averaging 5.3 points across 42 games played on the year.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Starting Wednesday

Layman will start Wednesday's matchup against the Pacers. Josh Okogie was deemed questionable with less than an hour before tipoff due to a personal matter, so he's been bumped from the starting five in favor of Layman. Layman's playing time has fallen by the wayside lately with the Wolves getting healthier, but in 10 starts this season, he's averaged 5.6 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 19.9 minutes.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Excised from rotation

Layman (coach's decision) went unused Monday in the Timberwolves' 112-107 loss to the Nets. Since heading to the bench last week after starting seven times in an eight-game span, Layman has effectively fallen out of head coach Chris Finch's rotation. Over the last four games, Layman has failed to leave the bench twice, and he's played only 19 combined minutes in a pair of games the Wolves lost by 20-plus points. Anthony Edwards, Jaden McDaniels, Jarrett Culver and Juancho Hernangomez look to be ahead of Layman in the pecking order for playing time at either forward spot, and Josh Okogie could slot ahead of Layman as well once he clears COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Shifts to bench

Layman will come off the bench for Wednesday's game against the Mavericks. With Josh Okogie getting the start at small forward for the Timberwolves on Wednesday, Layman will return to the bench after starting seven of the last eight games. He's averaging 6.1 points and 1.9 rebounds in 16.5 minutes per game this season and should continue to see plenty of run off the bench.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: In starting lineup

Layman is in the starting lineup at small forward for Monday's matchup against the Thunder. Layman saw a string of six consecutive starts come to an end in Saturday's loss to the Suns, as he played just 13 minutes off the bench. However, he is back in the starting lineup Monday, where he has averaged 5.6 points and 1.9 rebounds across 20.1 minutes in nine games this season.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Blocks two shots in 16 minutes

Layman finished Tuesday's loss to the Lakers with four points (2-6 FG, 0-2 3Pt), one rebound, one steal and two blocks. Layman has started the last five games, but he's averaging just 7.6 points and 2.2 rebounds in 22.8 minutes during that stretch, so he remains an afterthought in most fantasy formats.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Scores 14 points in spot start

Layman totaled 14 points (5-7 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 3-4 FT), two steals, one rebound and one assist in 26 minutes during Wednesday's 135-102 loss to the Hornets. Layman shifted into the starting lineup as new head coach Chris Finch continues to play with his rotations. The promotion was a good move on paper, though it didn't spark spectacular production. The Timberwolves are a complete mess right now; outside of Karl-Anthony Towns, Ricky Rubio and Anthony Edwards, they're not offering up much in the way of fantasy assets.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Starting Wednesday

Layman will start in Wednesday's game against the Hornets. Coming off a season-high 30 minutes in Sunday's loss to the Suns, Layman will get the start over Josh Okogie on Wednesday. It's a great opportunity for Layman, who managed to log 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and one block in his last appearance. While it seems unlikely that he'll be a fixture in the starting lineup for Minnesota going forward, he's certainly earned the opportunity for increased minutes.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Plays season-high 30 minutes

Layman logged 11 points (5-8 FG, 1-3 3Pt), four rebounds, four assists and one block across 30 minutes Sunday in the Timberwolves' 118-99 loss to the Suns. After being outside of the rotation for the last three games, Layman surprising became one of three Minnesota players who logged at least 30 minutes in the loss, joining starters Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns. Jarred Vanderbilt (15 minutes) and Jaden McDaniels (eight minutes) both had their playing time squeezed as a result, and given how he performed, Layman may get a look on the second unit at least temporarily. With averages of 6.1 points, 1.6 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.7 assists and 0.6 three-pointers in 15.0 minutes per game on the season, Layman doesn't profile as much of a fantasy option.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Boosts bench with eight points

Layman scored eight points (3-4 FG, 2-2 3Pt) and collected three rebounds Friday in a loss to the Raptors. Layman played only 13 minutes in the contest, but his plus-14 plus/minus was tops on the team. Layman had not played in any of Minnesota's previous five contests, so perhaps Friday's positive performance will help him make his way back into Minnesota's rotation.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Outstanding numbers in Saturday's loss

Layman tallied 16 points (6-9 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 2-3 FT), five steals, two rebounds and one assist in 23 minutes off the bench Saturday in the Timberwolves' 120-118 loss to the Thunder. The minutes, points and steals totals were all season highs for Layman, who has been included in the rotation in each of the past eight games while Jarrett Culver (ankle) has been on the mend. While the numbers don't look all that sustainable for Layman, he could see increased opportunities at small forward in future games, given how poorly both Culver and incumbent starter Josh Okogie have played this season.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Productive in limited minutes

Layman totaled seven points (3-6 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 0-2 FT), four rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot across 19 minutes Wednesday in a loss to Golden State. Layman didn't blow up in any particular category, but he produced a nice across-the-board stat line despite logging less than 20 minutes on the court. The forward is averaging 5.1 points and 1.3 boards in his second season with the Timberwolves.

  • Timberwolves' Jake Layman: Left out of rotation in return

Layman (coach's decision) didn't leave the bench Monday in the Timberwolves' 108-97 loss to the Hawks. Layman was active after missing the Wolves' previous two games while tending to a personal matter, but head coach Ryan Saunders couldn't find a spot for the 26-year-old in his rotation. Even with three key contributors (Karl-Anthony Towns, Juancho Hernangomez and Ricky Rubio) out due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols, Layman still found himself behind Josh Okogie, Jarred Vanderbilt, Jarrett Culver and Jaden McDaniels in the pecking order at either forward spot. Even in deeper leagues, Layman looks to be a long way away from attaining relevance.
