Player Outlook
The Rockies selected Aaron Schunk in the second round of the 2019 first-year player draft (No. 62 overall). After spending all 2023 with Triple-A Alburquerque, Schunk returned to the Isotopes last season before getting his big-league callup in late June. He played sparingly, filling in at second and third base with a taste of shortstop. Schunk appeared overmatched, recording a 31.6 percent strikeout rate and 4.1 percent walk rate. His batted ball metrics were poor. Schunk's .291/.346/.464 line in 185 Triple-A games may seem encouraging, but he played in one of the most hitter-friendly venues in the best league for offense. While anyone wearing a Rockies uniform warrants consideration, there are better dart throws than Schunk.

  • Rockies' Aaron Schunk: Remains in organization

Schunk cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday. The 27-year-old was designated for assignment by the Rockies earlier in the week but will stick in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. Schunk will remain in big-league camp as a non-roster invitee but is likely to begin the campaign at Albuquerque.

  • Rockies' Aaron Schunk: Booted off 40-man roster

The Rockies designated Schunk for assignment Wednesday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for Scott Alexander, who was signed Wednesday. Schunk managed just a .595 OPS in 39 games with the Rockies in 2024, but he can play all over the infield and has minor-league options, so he could draw interest via trade or waivers.

  • Rockies' Aaron Schunk: Taking advantage of opportunity

Schunk went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored Thursday against the Cardinals. Schunk has started three straight games at second base with Brendan Rodgers (hamstring) sidelined and has taken advantage by collecting multiple hits in each contest. Overall, he's gone 6-for-10 with four runs scored and four RBI. Schunk hasn't gotten regular playing time since being promoted to the majors June 29, but he could make a case for playing time in 2025 with a continued strong finish and a good showing in spring training.

  • Rockies' Aaron Schunk: Goes yard in loss

Schunk went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, an additional RBI and two total runs scored in Tuesday's 7-3 loss to the Cardinals. Schunk's playing time remains inconsistent, but he has hit safely in his last six games, going 8-for-16 in that span. The infielder is up to a .228/.265/.342 slash line with two homers, five RBI, 12 runs scored and three doubles over 83 plate appearances in the majors this season. He's also struck out at a 30.1 percent rate, which has limited his effectiveness when he gets a look in the lineup.

  • Rockies' Aaron Schunk: Returns to utility role

Schunk is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox. Schunk had made starts on the left side of the infield over the past three games, going 2-for-11 with a double, a walk and a run. His first start came Sunday while Ezequiel Tovar sat out due to an illness, while Schunk filled in for Ryan McMahon at third base Monday and Tuesday while McMahon tended to a jammed finger. Both McMahon and Tovar are healthy again and part of the lineup Wednesday, so Schunk will move back into a utility role.

  • Rockies' Aaron Schunk: First multi-hit game

Schunk went 2-for-5 with a walk, a double and a run scored in Monday's extra-innings win over the Red Sox. Schunk has only started six of 19 games since being promoted for his big-league debut, and he's accrued just 23 plate appearances as a result. The initial return isn't promising, as he's hitting just .136 with a 34.8 percent strikeout rate, though the uneven playing time likely isn't helping him settle in. Schunk also managed the first multi-hit game of his career Monday.

  • Rockies' Aaron Schunk: Debuts as pinch hitter

Schunk went 0-for-1 on Saturday against the White Sox. Schunk entered Saturday's game as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning to make his major-league debut. He had his contract selected Friday, though it's unclear how much playing time he'll receive with Brendan Rodgers and Ryan McMahon locked in as starters at second base and third base, respectively.

  • Rockies' Aaron Schunk: Contract selected by Colorado

The Rockies selected Schunk's contract from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday. Schunk posted an .811 OPS in his first taste of the Triple-A level in 2023 and has followed up with a .291/.339/.469 slash line through 69 contests this year. That production has come in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, so those numbers can't be taken at face value. Schunk will be making his big-league debut when he gets into a game, and he should see some playing time between second and third base while up with the Rockies, though those opportunities could be limited with both Brendan Rodgers and Ryan McMahon currently healthy.

  • Rockies' Aaron Schunk: Joins roster pool

The Rockies added Schunk to their 60-man roster pool Monday. A 2019 second-round pick, Schunk hasn't played above the rookie-ball level, so he won't be a serious candidate to elevate to the big-league roster in 2020. His entry into the 60-man pool will at least allow the Rockies to oversee his development at their alternate training site this summer following the cancellation of the minor-league season.
