• Yankees' Allan Winans: Option to join rotation

  Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Winans is an option to join the rotation after Carlos Carrasco was designated for assignment, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Boone also mentioned Ryan Yarbrough as a possibility to make starts for the club. Marcus Stroman (knee) has resumed throwing off a mound and could rejoin the rotation later this month, but the Yankees will need someone else to fill the spot for at least a couple turns. Winans has yet to give up an earned run in 14 innings this season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, collecting a 24:5 K:BB along the way.

  The Yankees optioned Winans to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday. Winans was selected from Triple-A on Saturday to replace the injured Marcus Stroman (knee), and the former will now head back to the minors to clear a roster spot for Clarke Schmidt (shoulder), who is set to be activated for his season debut Wednesday. Winans didn't appear in a game during his time in the Bronx, but he will keep his spot on the 40-man roster as he moves back to Triple-A.

Winans was let go by the Yankees on Wednesday, but he will remain with the organization after clearing waivers. He was claimed off waivers by the Yankees in late January after spending the last two seasons in Atlanta. Winans spent most of the 2024 regular season with Triple-A Gwinnett and posted a 7-5 record across 24 outings (16 starts) with a 3.30 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 100:37 K:BB over 114.2 innings.

Though Atlanta has a spot open in its rotation with Max Fried (forearm) on the injured list, Winans took himself out of consideration for another start after his rough showing Wednesday. Atlanta called up lefty Zach Logue from Gwinnett in a corresponding move to provide some length out of the bullpen for the second game of the doubleheader.

  The Braves have struggled to fill the final spot in their rotation basically from the jump, but they may have finally settled on Winans, a 28-year-old of basically no prospect stature who has nonetheless performed with every opportunity he's gotten this season. When last we saw him, he was striking out nine Mets over seven shutout innings in Game 1 of a doubleheader Aug. 12, and he's been pitching that way at Triple-A Gwinnett all year, putting together a 2.79 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 8.0 K/9. None of his four pitches is particularly impressive, with his fastball barely averaging 90 mph, but he mixes them well and generally keeps the ball on the ground, limiting damage. Nobody's expecting him to be the staff ace, but if he can gut out six innings at a time, the Braves offense can take care of the rest. He's expected to rejoin the rotation Monday and lines up for two starts right away.
