  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Cast off 40-man roster

The White Sox outrighted Stiever to Triple-A Charlotte on Monday. Though Chicago didn't previously announce that Stiever was designated for assignment, he was apparently moved off the 40-man roster and will now stick around in the organization upon clearing waivers. Once one of the White Sox's more promising starting pitching prospects, Stiever has covered just 85.1 innings between the majors and Triple-A since the start of the 2020 season while missing considerable time due to a lat injury.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Tabbed to start Tuesday

Stiever (lat) is listed as the White Sox's probable starter for Tuesday's spring game against the Diamondbacks. Stiever made only three rehab appearances last season and spent most of the campaign rehabbing from the right lat surgery he underwent in August of 2021. The 25-year-old is now apparently fully healthy and has an outside shot at Chicago's Opening Day rotation, though he's more likely to begin the year in the minors while coming off a lost season.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Beginning rehab assignment

Stiever (lat) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Charlotte, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. Stiever has resided on the White Sox's 60-day injured list all season while recovering from the surgery he required last August to address a right lat injury. Even if he had been healthy for spring training, Stiever likely would have been on the outside looking in for a rotation spot with the White Sox, so he shouldn't be viewed as a candidate to join the big club whenever he's formally activated. The White Sox will likely just want to see Stiever make an appearance or two for Charlotte to feel more confident about his health heading into the offseason, when the organization will have to decide whether to tender him a contract for 2023.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Throwing off mound

Stiever (lat) is throwing bullpen sessions at the White Sox's spring training facility in Arizona, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. The 25-year-old has been sidelined since undergoing lat surgery in August of last year, and he could be available down the stretch for the White Sox. Stiever may soon advance to throwing live batting practice, and he could start a minor-league rehab assignment shortly thereafter.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Goes on 60-day IL

The White Sox placed Stiever (lat) on the 60-day injured list Thursday, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. Though Stiever has been in attendance at big-league camp, he remains limited to rehab work and wasn't expected to be ready to pitch at the start of the season after undergoing surgery on his right lat Aug. 23. The move to the 60-day IL officially rules Stiever out for the first two months of the campaign and opens up a 40-man roster spot for waiver pickup Yoan Aybar. Stiever will be eligible to begin a minor-league rehab assignment during his stint on the IL, and once the 60 days lapse and if he's deemed fully healthy, he'll likely slot into the rotation at Triple-A Charlotte.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Could fill innings behind Kopech

The White Sox recalled Stiever from their alternate training site ahead of Sunday's game against the Rangers, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. With the start of the minor-league season just over a week away, Stiever should be in store for a brief stay with the White Sox, but he could fill an important role Sunday. Michael Kopech is scheduled to start the contest, but he likely won't be able to work much longer than the three innings he tossed in his last outing April 18 in Boston. According to Fegan, manager Tony La Russa noted that he doesn't expect Liam Hendriks, Aaron Bummer or Codi Heuer to be available out of the bullpen due to workload concerns, so Stiever -- who is stretched out to 100 pitches -- could be called upon to piggyback Kopech on Sunday.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: White Sox-Cleveland postponed

Stiever and the White Sox won't face Cleveland on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Northeast Ohio, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports. Chicago didn't announce a starter for Wednesday's game prior to the postponement, but Stiever was believed to be a candidate to either start or work as a bulk reliever after he was recalled from the alternate site. In light of the postponement coupled with a team off day Thursday, the White Sox likely won't require Stiever or another pitcher to make a spot start for Lance Lynn (back), who is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list when his next turn in the rotation comes up.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Rejoining big-league club

Stiever will be recalled from the alternate training site Wednesday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. The 23-year-old was also promoted as the 27th man for Sunday's doubleheader against the Red Sox, though he didn't appear in either contest. Manager Tony La Russa has yet to decide on a starter for Wednesday's series finale, and Stiever could factor into the mix either as a traditional starter or a long reliever.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Heads back to alternate camp

Stiever was returned to the alternate training site after Sunday's doubleheader against the Red Sox. Stiever was called up as the 27th man for Sunday's twin bill but didn't appear in either of the two games. • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Called up for twin bill

Stiever was recalled from the alternate training site to serve as the 27th man for Sunday's doubleheader in Boston. The 23-year-old missed out on the Opening Day roster but will join the big-league club Sunday for the first time this season. The White Sox have yet to announce their official starter for Game 2, but Stiever is a strong bet to take the mound with Dallas Keuchel starting the matinee. The young right-hander made his major-league debut last year and surrendered seven runs with a 3:4 K:BB over 6.1 innings.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Misses out on Opening Day roster

Stiever was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday. The 23-year-old has been talked up by new manager Tony La Russa and is expected to contribute for the White Sox in 2021, but he won't make the Opening Day roster. Stiever made his major-league debut last season and allowed seven earned runs across 6.1 innings.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Makes spring debut

Stiever allowed one run on three hits while striking out two and did not walk a batter over two innings in Friday's spring game against the Mariners. Stiever started Friday's game, his first Cactus League appearance of 2020, but he's not expected to break camp with the White Sox. The 23-year-old right-hander has been talked up by manager Tony La Russa as potential starting depth and someone that will contribute to the 2021 team, per Scott Merkin of MLB.com.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Impressing as starting depth

Stiever will stay stretched out and will serve as starting depth in 2021, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. Stiever made two starts for the White Sox during the abbreviated 2020 season and allowed seven runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out three over 6.1 innings. Although he struggled over a limited sample last year, manager Tony La Russa called the right-hander a "future rotation fixture" Wednesday and said that he has no plans to use him as a reliever.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Optioned to alternate camp

Stiever was optioned to the White Sox's alternate training site Saturday. Stiever was roughed up in his start against the Reds on Friday, and he'll return to alternate camp after Dallas Keuchel (back) was reinstated from the injured list in a corresponding move. Unless another injury occurs in the starting rotation, Stiever is unlikely to be needed as a starter over the final several games of the regular season.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Rocked by Reds

Stiever (0-1) took the loss after giving up four home runs to the Reds on Friday. He allowed six runs on five hits and two walks over 2.2 innings. Stiever made his second start and was unable to avoid damage like he did the first time out. The Reds ambushed the 23-year-old right-hander in a five-run third inning, launching three homers. With Dallas Keuchel (back) set to return to the rotation Saturday, it's unlikely the White Sox will need Stiever for starting duty the rest of the way unless another injury crops up.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Goes 3.2 innings in no decision

Stiever allowed one run on two hits and two walks over 3.2 innings Sunday, striking out three in the win over Detroit. He did not factor in the decision. Stiever loaded the bases in the first inning but escaped after allowing just one run. He left the game in a 1-1 tie before the White Sox pulled away in the middle innings. It's unclear if the 23-year-old will get another chance in the rotation or be sent back to the alternate training site.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Contract purchased, starting Sunday

Stiever's contract was purchased prior to his start Sunday against the Tigers. A top-10 prospect in a shallow White Sox system, Stiever has a mid-90s fastball and could eventually develop into a mid-rotation starter. The 23-year-old righty logged a 2.15 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 77 strikeouts in 71 innings at High-A last year, but he has never pitched above that level. That said, this is a pretty solid matchup for him, and he has the stuff to have success in any given start.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Set for debut Sunday

Stiever will be called up from the alternate training site to start Sunday's game against the Tigers, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The 23-year-old has never pitched above the High-A level, but he'll join the White Sox on Sunday to make his major-league debut against the Tigers. It's likely to be a spot start for Stiever, who had a 3.48 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 154:27 K:BB over 145 innings last year in the minors.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Stiever: Invited to big-league camp

Stiever will join the White Sox for big-league camp this spring, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Stiever excelled as a starting pitcher for High-A Winston-Salem last season, featuring a 2.15 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 77 strikeouts across 12 starts. The 22-year-old and fifth-round pick in the 2018 draft will have the opportunity to spend a few weeks with the big-league coaching staff, but he is still a year or two away from actually contending for a roster spot.
