  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Confirmed for rotation

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza announced Wednesday that Megill made the club's season-opening rotation, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

The 28-year-old entered camp in competition to be the Mets' No. 5 starter with Kodai Senga (shoulder) set to begin the season on the injured list, and Megill delivered a solid showing during spring training with a 3.45 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB in 15.2 frames to win the job. The right-hander got stretched out to 76 pitches in his previous Grapefruit League start over the weekend and should begin the campaign with a full starter's workload. Megill made 25 starts for New York last season and had a 4.70 ERA 1.58 WHIP and 105:58 K:BB over 126.1 innings.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Keeps building up Monday

Megill allowed one run on three hits over four innings in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. He struck out two without walking a batter.

Aside from a second-inning solo shot by Tim Anderson, Megill looked sharp once again as he built up to 61 pitches (36 strikes). With Kodai Senga (shoulder) beginning the season on the IL, Megill appears ticketed for an Opening Day rotation spot, and he's earned it with an impressive 15:2 K:BB over 12 spring innings.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Dazzles against Yankees

Megill struck out six and walked two over three scoreless, no-hit innings during Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees.

The right-hander came into the game a favorite to secure the rotation spot opened up by Kodai Senga's shoulder injury, and Megill looked the part against a New York lineup that featured mainly younger players like Anthony Volpe, Austin Wells and Everson Pereira. Megill did plunk Oswald Peraza with a pitch and threw just 29 of 49 pitches for strikes, but he got some big whiffs with his new splitter. The 28-year-old right-hander has allowed only one run through his first eight spring innings with an impressive 13:2 K:BB.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Favorite for fifth starter role

Megill has emerged as the favorite to win the Mets' No. 5 starter job, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.

The 28-year-old right-hander added a splitter to his arsenal over the winter, and so far the results have been encouraging, as Megill has allowed one run over his first five Grapefruit League innings with a 7:0 K:BB. A pitch that can generate more whiffs could be crucial for his fortunes -- after posting a strikeout rate north of 25 percent in the majors in 2021 and 2022, Megill saw that number drop to 18.5 percent last year. The Mets have a hole to fill in their Opening Day rotation due to Kodai Senga's shoulder strain, and while Jose Butto and Joey Lucchesi still have a chance to make their case for the No. 5 job to start the season due to Senga's expected absence, it appears to be Megill's to lose.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Solid spring debut

Megill gave up a run on two hits and struck out three over two innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals.

After a shaky first inning that saw him plunk Brendan Donovan to lead off the game before uncorking a wild pitch, Megill breezed through a 1-2-3 second frame. The right-hander came into camp looking to win the Mets' No. 5 starter role, but Kodai Senga's shoulder strain has opened up a second spot in the Opening Day rotation. Megill endured a rough 2023, but he worked on adding a splitter to his arsenal in the offseason and could offer more strikeout upside than the likes of Joey Lucchesi and Jose Butto, his main competition in the rotation battle.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Could secure rotation spot

Megill will be among the competitors for the fifth spot in the Mets' rotation following the injury to Kodai Senga (shoulder), Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Jose Quintana, Sean Manaea, Luis Severino and Adrian Houser appear locked into the first four spots, leaving Megill, Joey Lucchesi, Jose Butto and Max Kranick to fight for the final one. Megill offers arguably the best upside of the bunch, but he struggled in 2023, collecting a 4.70 ERA and 105:58 K:BB over 126.1 innings.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Notches ninth win

Megill (9-8) picked up the win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the Phillies, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over 7.1 innings. He struck out seven.

The right-hander saved his best performance of the season for last, as he hadn't worked more than six innings in any start this season. The quality start was Megill's sixth of 2023, but half of them have come in his last six outings -- a stretch in which he posted a 2.55 ERA and 31:12 K:BB through 35.1 innings. The impressive finish to the campaign should make the 28-year-old a favorite to secure an Opening Day rotation spot with the Mets in 2024, provided the team doesn't engage in another winter spending spree.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Start pushed back following rainout

Megill's next start will be pushed back after Friday's game between the Phillies and Mets was postponed due to inclement weather, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.

The two teams will now play a doubleheader Saturday, with Megill presumably getting the ball in one of those contests. It will be the second start in a row against the Phillies for Megill, who yielded three runs over six innings in a no-decision his last time out.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Punches out six in no-decision

Megill did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over six innings against the Phillies. He struck out six.

Megill was cruising through five scoreless innings before running out of steam in the sixth, and his potential scoreless outing was undone by a J.T. Realmuto three-run homer. The 28-year-old righty has struggled to the tune of a 4.92 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 98:56 K:BB over 119 innings this season. Megill, who has gone at least five innings in five straight starts but has just one win in that span to show for it, is currently scheduled to make his last start of the year against the Phillies at home.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Stuck with tough loss Saturday

Megill (8-8) took the loss Saturday as the Mets fell 3-2 to the Reds, giving up three runs (two earned) on nine hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out two.

The right-hander came one out short of his fifth quality start of the season, tossing 56 of 97 pitches for strikes in a solid effort, but New York wasn't able to supply Megill with much run support. He's allowed three runs or less in six straight starts with a 3.13 ERA, but his 1.55 WHIP and 28:15 K:BB through 31.2 innings over that stretch suggest he still has some work to do to lock down a rotation spot for 2024. Megill's next outing lines up for a road series next weekend in Philadelphia.
