  • Guardians' David Fry: Moving rehab to Double-A

Fry (elbow) shifted his rehab assignment Monday from the rookie-level Arizona Complex League to Double-A Akron. Fry went 0-for-8 with two walks and three strikeouts over his three contests in rookie ball, which marked his first game action since the Guardians' ALCS matchup with the Yankees last October. The 29-year-old resides on Cleveland's 60-day injured list while he recovers from the UCL revision surgery he underwent on his right elbow last November, which will prevent him from playing defense until 2026. He'll continue to serve as a designated hitter during his rehab assignment and could be a potential platoon mate for Kyle Manzardo with the big club once he's activated him from the IL.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Starting rehab assignment in ACL

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said Monday that Fry (elbow) is set to begin playing in rehab games in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League this week, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports. After undergoing UCL revision surgery on his right elbow in November, Fry isn't expected to catch or play the infield or outfield at any point this season, but he'll be available as a designated hitter once he completes his hitting progression. He's seemingly reached the point in his rehab program where he's faced live pitching in simulated games, and he now looks like he's ready to stockpile at-bats in minor-league contests. Fry won't be eligible to return from the 60-day injured list until late May, and since he may only be in line for a short-side platoon role at DH once he's eventually activated, the Guardians could keep him in the minors for close to the full 20-day rehab window.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Close to game action in Arizona

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said Sunday that Fry (elbow) is "progressing well" and is expected to return to game activity at the organization's spring training complex in Arizona at some point in May, Michael Beaven of the Akron Beacon Journal reports. A 2024 All-Star, Fry's production slowed down in the second half of last season while he played through right elbow inflammation, but he bounced back during the Guardians' playoff run, hitting .286 with two home runs over 10 postseason contests. The 29-year-old ultimately needed surgery in early November to repair the UCL in his elbow, and since the procedure was to his throwing arm, he's not expected to be ready to catch or play the infield or outfield until 2026. The Guardians still envision Fry contributing as a designated hitter in 2025, so he could return from the 60-day injured list once he stacks up some at-bats at extended spring training and during his minor-league rehab assignment.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Taking dry swings

Fry (elbow) was cleared to begin taking dry swings Wednesday. The Guardians sent Fry to the 60-day IL in February, which ensures he'll be out until at least May 26. Depending on how quickly he progresses through the rest of his rehab from November elbow surgery, he may be ready to contribute as a DH by then, though he won't have any hope of playing in the field or behind the plate until 2026.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Sent to 60-day IL

Cleveland placed Fry (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday. The transaction doesn't come as a surprise, after Fry underwent surgery in November to address a torn ligament in his elbow. Fry is expected to need 6-to-8 months to recover from surgery before he's ready to serve as a designated hitter, so he could have a chance at being ready to contribute for Cleveland when he's first eligible to come off the 60-day IL in late May. The 29-year-old will require 12 months of recovery time before he's cleared for full throwing, so he won't be an option behind the plate or in the field in 2025.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Undergoes UCL surgery on elbow

Fry underwent surgery Monday to repair the UCL in his right elbow, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Fry initially injured his elbow in June but played through it for the rest of the season, although he was limited to designated hitter duty almost exclusively. He is expected to be ready to DH again in 6-to-8 months, but it will be 12 months before he's able to play the field again. Fry batted .263/.356/.448 with 14 homers during the regular season for the Guardians.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Lifts homer Monday

Fry went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's 5-3 win over the White Sox. Fry has slipped into a part-time role in September, going 2-for-10 over four games this month. He made an impact with an increasingly rare start, giving the Guardians a 3-0 lead with a third-inning homer Monday. While it's been a solid year for Fry overall -- he's at a .260/.358/.448 slash line through 372 plate appearances -- he hasn't been able to hang onto an everyday role for a division-leading club.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Goes yard in win

Fry went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Rangers. Fry's power has picked up in August -- he's hit five homers this month, giving him 13 for the year. That's about the only thing trending in the right direction for the 28-year-old, who has been losing playing time since he's hitting just .175 (10-for-57) across 19 games this month. Overall, Fry has a .265/.364/.454 slash line with 46 RBI, 40 runs scored, 14 doubles and four stolen bases over 102 contests.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Losing work against righties

Fry is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Yankees. Fry is on the bench for a fourth straight matchup versus a right-handed pitcher (Gerrit Cole) and seems to have moved into a short-side platoon role while his bat has cooled down since the All-Star break. Jhonkensy Noel will occupy the designated-hitter spot Thursday, and he and Will Brennan should continue to get playing time against right-handers at Fry's expense.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Sitting again Sunday

Fry is absent from Sunday's lineup against Milwaukee. Fry will sit for the third time in four games, with Steven Kwan serving as the designated hitter for Sunday's contest. Since Aug. 1, Fry is slashing .163/.217/.442 with four home runs and seven RBI across 45 plate appearances.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Swats homer in nightcap

Fry went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a 5-3 loss to the Diamondbacks in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader. Fry didn't play in the first game, but he started at first base in the second contest. The homer was his second over six games in August after he had just one extra-base hit, a double, in all of July. The 28-year-old has cooled off dramatically since his hot start to the year, but he still has a .275/.375/.447 slash line with 10 homers, 39 RBI, 36 runs scored, four stolen bases and 14 doubles over 89 contests. Fry hasn't been strictly platooned, but he's not an everyday option versus right-handed pitchers.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Retreating to bench

Fry is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Tigers. Fry will get some rest for the series finale after he started at either designated hitter or first base in each of Cleveland's last five games while going 4-for-15 with two walks, one RBI and one run. Jose Ramirez will get a day off from playing third base and will serve as the Guardians' DH while Fry hits the bench.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Sitting in series finale

Fry is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres. After going 3-for-3 with a walk, two runs and an RBI in Friday's 7-0 win, Fry remained in the lineup at designated hitter in Saturday's 7-0 loss, finishing 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. Though he was named a first-time All-Star and upholds an .860 OPS on the season, Fry is slashing just .130/.231/.130 over his last nine games and has started to lose out on regular playing time versus right-handed pitching. He'll be the odd man out of the lineup Sunday while Jose Ramirez gets a day out of the infield and serves as the Guardians' designated hitter.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Out of lineup again Sunday

Fry is out of the lineup Sunday for Cleveland's game versus Tampa Bay. Fry will hit the bench for the fourth time in the Guardians' past eight games. He's been swinging a cold bat throughout July, going 3-for-28 with one RBI through 10 contests. Jose Ramirez is getting a day off his feet to play designated hitter Sunday, while Daniel Schneemann covers the hot corner in Ramirez's stead.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Heading to bench Thursday

Fry is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the White Sox. Fry has a .606 OPS over his past 12 games and will take a seat for Thursday's contest. Jose Ramirez will rest his legs as the designated hitter while Gabriel Arias receives a start at the hot corner.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Riding pine Sunday

Fry is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals. Jose Ramirez will get a day out of the infield and serve as the Guardians' designated hitter, so Fry will hit the bench to accommodate him. Fry had started in each of the last three games, going 4-for-10 with two doubles and two walks to bring his OPS up to .950 on the season.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Battling elbow inflammation

Fry was removed from Sunday's game against Toronto due to right elbow inflammation, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Fry delivered an RBI single during the first inning of Sunday's contest before being replaced behind the plate by Bo Naylor in the third. The Guardians are currently viewing Fry as day-to-day, though he will likely undergo further testing to determine the extent of his injury.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Taking seat Thursday

Fry is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Blue Jays. Fry will take a seat for Thursday's series finale, as he had been scheduled to head to the bench Wednesday before that game was postponed due to inclement weather. Though his 1.092 OPS on the season ranks first in the majors among all players with at least 140 plate appearances, Fry still hasn't quite locked down a full-time role in Cleveland. He'll be out of the lineup for the second time in three games while the Guardians go with Bo Naylor at catcher and Kyle Manzardo at designated hitter.
