Irvin was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday. Irvin didn't give up an earned run in three appearances after being shifted to the bullpen. He was needed for two innings in Tuesday's loss to the Cardinals, so he's being replaced by a fresh arm.... See More ... See Less

Orioles' Cole Irvin: Relegated to bullpen
Irvin will serve as a multi-inning reliever out of Baltimore's bullpen going forward, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. As the Orioles shift to a five-man rotation, Irvin will end up as the odd man out after accumulating a 4.91 ERA and 1.38 WHIP through 69.2 innings on the year. Given his relatively poor performance and the impending return of John Means (elbow), Irvin likely won't make it back into the rotation before the end of the season.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Cole Irvin: Takes fourth loss
Irvin (1-4) allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four over 5.2 innings Friday, taking the loss versus the Diamondbacks. Irvin put together a pair of solid starts right after the Orioles moved to a six-man rotation, but he's given up four runs in each of his last two outings. The southpaw was tagged for two-run home runs by Lourdes Gurriel and Christian Walker. Irvin is at a 4.91 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 62:21 K:BB through 69.2 innings over 20 appearances (12 starts) this year. With John Means (elbow) nearing a return to the major-league roster, Irvin's time as a starter for the Orioles could again be coming to a close.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Cole Irvin: Allows four runs in no decision
Irvin did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk over six innings against Colorado. He struck out five. This marked Irvin's third start since the All-Star break and it was his least effective effort. After allowing just one run in 10 innings during his previous two starts, his night was capped by a two-run fifth-inning home run by Ezequiel Tovar that gave the Rockies a 4-2 lead and left Irvin on the hook for the loss. The Orioles rallied late to allow Irvin to escape with a no-decision, however. The lefty holds a 4.78 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP and 58 strikeouts in 64 innings, which he'll take with him into his next start, penciled in to take place next week against the White Sox.... See More ... Orioles' Cole Irvin: Steady versus former team
Irvin allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings in a no-decision Saturday in the Orioles' 7-2 win over the Athletics. Irvin's lone mistake was the first of Aledmys Diaz's two solo home runs in the contest. Beyond that, it was a successful return to Oakland for Irvin, who pitched with the Athletics in 2021 and 2022. He's given up just two runs (one earned) over 14 innings spanning five appearances in August. The southpaw's 4.66 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 53:19 K:BB through 58 innings overall are nothing special, but he's been solid with one run allowed over 10 innings across his two starts since joining Baltimore's six-man rotation. He's tentatively lined up for a home start versus the Rockies next weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Cole Irvin: In line to start Saturday
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Thursday that Irvin is "probable" to start Saturday in Seattle as the team moves to a six-man rotation, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports. The O's have lots of young arms in their rotation, so going to a six-man setup allows the club to ease their foot off the gas a bit with workloads. Irvin isn't guaranteed to be the sixth man for long, as Tyler Wells is slated to start for Double-A Bowie on Saturday, and the hope is that Wells will be ready to rejoin Baltimore's rotation at some point.... Orioles' Cole Irvin: Moving to bullpen
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Irvin will move to the bullpen with Grayson Rodriguez set to rejoin the rotation Monday, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports. Irvin pitched to a 2.92 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over six outings between June 10 and July 7, working as a starter in five of those appearances. Despite the strong results, the Orioles want to give their top pitching prospect another chance to prove himself, so Irvin is now expected to serve as a multi-inning relief option. The southpaw could still rejoin the rotation later if injuries or poor performance arise.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Cole Irvin: Puts up strong start
Irvin allowed a run on three hits and struck out four without walking a batter over 6.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Twins on Friday. Irvin has allowed exactly one run in five of his six outings (five starts) since returning to the big-league roster June 10. Friday's effort was his longest of the season, though a lack of run support helped stretch his winless streak to five appearances. He now sports a 5.50 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 32:13 K:BB through 37.2 innings across 10 appearances (eight starts) on the year. He's pitched well enough lately to remain in the rotation as the Orioles' fifth starter following the All-Star break.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Cole Irvin: Solid in no-decision
Irvin did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on six hits and three walks over five innings against Minnesota. He struck out one. Irvin has pitched better since he was recalled from Triple-A, working to a 3.44 ERA over his last 18.1 innings. The lone run against him Sunday came on Willi Castro's two-out double in the fifth inning. The 29-year-old Irvin is 1-3 with a 6.32 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 28:13 K:BB across 31.1 innings this season. He's currently in line for a rematch with the Twins in his next outing.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Cole Irvin: Lifted after rain delay
Irvin did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing one run on three hits over three innings in a 10-3 victory over Cincinnati. He struck out three and didn't record a walk. Irvin was replaced to start the fourth inning after a long rain delay, but he had been relatively sharp to start the game. The 29-year-old has been much better during his current big-league stint, posting a 4.05 ERA and 14:2 K:BB over his last four appearances (13.1 innings), than he was at the beginning of the season, when he gave up 15 runs over 12.2 innings. If he can continue to stack quality outings, Irvin should have a good chance of sticking in Baltimore's rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Cole Irvin: Picking up another start
Irvin is scheduled to start Friday's game against the Cubs. Irvin will receive a second turn through the Baltimore rotation, filling the spot that previously belonged to Grayson Rodriguez before the rookie right-hander was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on May 27. In his return to the big leagues last weekend versus the Royals, Irvin picked up a win while striking out five over 5.1 innings of one-run ball. Though he'll be making his upcoming start on the road at Wrigley Field, Irvin will at least draw another favorable matchup versus a Cubs offense that ranks 27th in wRC+ (72) since the beginning of June.... Orioles' Cole Irvin: Recalled ahead of start against KC
Irvin was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday ahead of his start against the Royals. The veteran southpaw will make a home start against the Royals after logging a 2.32 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 18:2 K:BB in 31 innings over his last five starts at Triple-A. The lack of strikeouts cap Irvin's upside, and he has a 10.38 ERA in 13 MLB innings this season. If he sticks around in the rotation, Irvin would likely face the Cubs on the road next week.... Orioles' Cole Irvin: Promotion imminent
Irvin will be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday to start against the Royals, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Irvin has made four appearances (three starts) this season with Baltimore with limited success. He holds a 10.38 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in the majors through 13 innings, but his Triple-A numbers (3.21 ERA and 1.05 WHIP) are much more reassuring. Irvin will have the benefit of facing a Royals lineup that ranks 27th in team OPS this year, but his shaky history makes him a risky fantasy play.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Cole Irvin: Could be in line to start Saturday
Irvin looks to be the "most likely option" to start for the Orioles on Saturday versus the Royals, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports. Manager Brandon Hyde has professed a desire to use a traditional starter rather than employ a bullpen game, and Irvin seems to line up best given the recent usage of all potential options. The left-hander has struggled mightily in the majors this season (10.38 ERA) but holds a 3.21 ERA with just four walks in seven starts with Triple-A Norfolk.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Cole Irvin: Optioned to Triple-A
Irvin was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Irvin will return to Triple-A after being called up Tuesday to provide the Orioles with an additional bullpen arm. The left-hander recorded one out in Saturday's win, recording his first scoreless outing with Baltimore this season. Overall, Irvin owns a 10.38 ERA in the majors this year, and he'll look to hone his craft with Norfolk before potentially returning to Baltimore later in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Cole Irvin: Recalled to work in bullpen
Irvin was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk by the Orioles on Tuesday. Per Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun, it appears the O's are bringing Irvin back to provide some length out of the bullpen. Irvin was sent down last month after posting a 10.66 ERA in three starts for Baltimore, but he got back on track at Norfolk with a 3.19 ERA in five outings.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Cole Irvin: Optioned after poor start
Irvin was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Irvin allowed six earned runs across only four innings against the Athletics -- his former team -- Thursday. After three turns through the rotation this season, he carried a 10.66 ERA and a disastrous 5.7 BB/9 and 1.4 HR/9. He'll likely be back in the big-league rotation at some point during the campaign, but he'll have to sort things out in the minors in the meantime. In the short term, the move likely means that both Kyle Bradish (foot) and Grayson Rodriguez will stick in the starting five once Bradish returns from the IL.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Cole Irvin: Another shaky outing Saturday
Irvin (0-2) took the loss Saturday as the Orioles fell 4-1 to the Yankees. He gave up three runs on four hits and four walks over 4.2 innings and struck out five. The southpaw's debut with Baltimore has not gone smoothly so far. Irvin was expected to provide the team with some stability in the rotation, but instead he's failed to last five innings in either of his first two starts, stumbling to a 9.35 ERA and 9:6 K:BB through 8.2 innings. He'll look to turn things around in his next outing, which could come next week in a home tilt against his former club, the A's.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Cole Irvin: Tagged with six runs
Irvin (0-1) allowed six runs on eight hits and two walks over four innings Sunday, striking out four and taking a loss against Boston. Irvin never found a groove Sunday, allowing a run in each of the first three innings followed by three more in the fifth. He forced just four swinging strikes on 88 total pitches. On the bright side, only two of the eight hits he allowed went for extra bases, including Enrique Hernandez's solo homer. Irvin is projected to face the Yankees at home next week.... See More ... Orioles' Cole Irvin: Works into fifth inning
Irvin allowed two runs on six hits and no walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings in Thursday's Grapefruit League win over the Blue Jays. The southpaw said he struggled early in the start as he was still experimenting with pitches, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. Irvin is expected to make two more appearances in Grapefruit League play, which will serve as more dedicated preparation for regular-season action. The 29-year-old is a virtual lock for the Orioles' rotation after posting a career-best 3.98 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with a 128:36 K:BB over 181 innings with the Athletics last season.... See More ...
