The Pirates recalled Hernandez from Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday. With Roansy Contreras on paternity leave, Hernandez will join Pittsburgh's bullpen for the start of the season. The 26-year-old southpaw registered a 4.97 ERA and 1.36 WHIP last season across 50.2 innings and will presumably head back to Indianapolis once Contreras rejoins the team.... See More ... See Less

Pirates' Jose Hernandez: Returns to action Friday
Hernandez (calf) was activated from the 15-day injured list Friday. He allowed three runs on two hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning during Friday's loss to the Angels. Yohan Ramirez was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room for the left-hander on the 26-man roster. Hernandez missed just over a month with a right calf strain, and he allowed home runs to Zach Neto and Taylor Ward to account for the three runs. He also recorded three strikeouts -- a wild pitch allowed Shohei Ohtani to reach base. Hernandez carries a 3.54 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 31:7 K:BB through 28 innings this season while adding three holds, so he's not likely to see a lot of high-leverage work.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jose Hernandez: Begins rehab assignment
Hernandez (calf) is beginning a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Indianapolis, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Hernandez should be able to return to the Pirates' bullpen by the weekend, after making maybe one or two appearances on the farm. The 25-year-old had posted a strong 2.63 ERA and 28:6 K:BB in 27.1 innings before he landed on the injured list June 18 with a right calf strain.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jose Hernandez: Bullpen session Saturday
Hernandez (calf) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Hernandez appears on track to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible next week. Selected away from the Dodgers in the Rule 5 Draft back in December, the 25-year-old left-hander had registered a sharp 2.63 ERA and 28:6 K:BB through 27.1 innings this season with Pittsburgh prior to suffering a minor right calf strain.... Pirates' Jose Hernandez: Heads to IL with hamstring strain
The Pirates placed Hernandez on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a right calf strain, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Hernandez was a Rule 5 draft selection by the Pirates over the winter, and the left-hander has more than held his own with a 2.63 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 26 appearances and 27.1 innings with the club. He'll be out for at least the next two weeks, however, and Ryan Borucki was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis in the corresponding transaction.... See More ... See Less

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf16M agoThat's game. Pirates 6, Marlins 5, 12 innings. What a ballgame. Oneil Cruz hit a game-tying homer in the eighth. Bryan Reynolds and Edward Olivares also went deep. Luis Ortiz SHOVES. Jose Hernandez, who wasn't even supposed to be here, gets his first save. The Pirates are 1-0.

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG2H agoFrustrating sixth for the Pirates. They get Luzardo out. Two on, nobody out, Cutch swings 3-1 on a breaking ball. Winds up striking out. Davis beats out a dribbler, then Cruz & Triolo look at called third strikes. Had a chance that inning & squandered it.

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG2H agoPirates are obviously having a tough time with Jesus Luzardo. The lefty has struck out 8 through 5 IP. Pirates have 18 whiffs, 10 on Luzardo's slider.
