Fernandez signed a minor-league contract with the Blue Jays on Thursday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Fernandez spent the 2022 campaign at the Triple-A level with the Rockies and had a 6.63 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 65:32 K:BB across 57 innings. The 27-year-old touches 100 mph with his fastball but has struggled with control throughout his minor-league career.

Fernandez was designated for assignment Saturday after spending the start of the year with Albuquerque, where he's struggled to a 9.47 ERA in 19 innings of relief. He'll remain at the same level going forward but will no longer be there as a member of the 40-man roster.

Despite a heavy fastball that averaged 99 mph, Fernandez managed only 42 strikeouts across 42.2 frames in the minors. Though he won't begin the season in the majors barring an injury to other relievers, Fernandez is likely to contribute in Colorado at some point.

Rockies' Julian Fernandez: Gets call to big leagues
The Rockies selected Fernandez's contract from Triple-A Albuquerque on Wednesday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
After having not appeared in affiliated ball since the 2017 season, Fernandez impressed the Colorado brass between stops at Albuquerque and Double-A Hartford this season. Across 42.2 innings in the minors, Fernandez submitted a 2.53 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 42:16 K:BB. The Rockies will likely give him a look in a middle-relief role in his first taste of big-league action, but given the lack of quality options atop the bullpen depth chart, Fernandez could quickly rise in the pecking order if he excels in his initial appearances.

Rockies' Julian Fernandez: Available in relief Tuesday
Fernandez (elbow) is listed as an available option out of the Colorado bullpen for Tuesday's Cactus League game against the Cubs, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
Fernandez hasn't seen any action in affiliated ball since 2018 spring training, as he's spent the better part of two years recovering from Tommy John surgery. Now seemingly healthy again, the 24-year-old is attending Rockies camp as a non-roster invitee. Considering he's never pitched above the Low-A level and has missed the past two seasons, Fernandez could open the campaign at a lower-level affiliate.

Rockies' Julian Fernandez: Returns to Rockies
Fernandez (elbow) was returned to the Rockies on Saturday.
Fernandez was plucked by the Giants from the Rockies in the Rule 5 draft back in December of 2017. He suffered an elbow injury prior to the 2018 regular season and has spent the entire time since then recovering from Tommy John surgery, first with the Giants and then with the Marlins after being claimed off waivers in November of 2018. Since he didn't spend any time on a big-league roster within two years of being drafted, he's now back in Colorado per Rule 5 rules.

Fernandez has been shut down from throwing after experiencing right elbow discomfort, Wells Dusenbury of the Sun Sentinel reports.
Fernandez is headed for further evaluation following this setback. He underwent Tommy John surgery in April of 2018 and had progressed to live batting practice prior to feeling discomfort in his repaired elbow. Fernandez is currently without a timetable for his return.

Fernandez underwent Tommy John surgery in April in 2018 and took a big step forward Monday by making it through a brief side session. Although he likely has at least a few months left of rehab, this is a good sign for the right-hander, who figures to toss at least a few more bullpen sessions before advancing to facing live hitters.

Marlins' Julian Fernandez: Shifts to IL
The Marlins placed Fernandez (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday.
A November waiver pickup, Fernandez was already expected to be sidelined for at least the first two months of the season while continuing to recover from April 2018 Tommy John surgery. The move to the 60-day IL confirms that Fernandez still has a ways to go in his rehab, which could extend through the All-Star break. Since the 23-year-old was previously a Rule 5 selection of the Giants last winter before sitting out 2018 following the elbow injury, he'll have to stick on Miami's active roster once activated from the IL or get offered back to the Rockies, the organization that originally signed him as an amateur free agent in 2012.

Marlins' Julian Fernandez: Scooped up by Miami
The Marlins claimed Fernandez (elbow) off waivers from the Giants on Monday.
The Giants declined to add the 23-year-old back to their 40-man roster earlier this month while he continues to recover from Tommy John surgery, which prevented him from pitching at any level in 2018. Considering Fernandez underwent the elbow procedure last spring, he should be available to pitch again at some point in 2019, though he'll almost certainly be stashed on the Marlins' 10- or 60-day disabled list to begin the campaign. Because the Giants previously poached Fernandez from the Rockies in the Rule 5 draft last winter, the Marlins will have to keep the right-hander on the roster throughout the season or offer him back to Colorado. Fernandez didn't accrue any MLB service time while the Giants kept him on the DL all of last season.

Tommy John surgery was an expected outcome for Fernandez after he was diagnosed with a sprained UCL on Tuesday. A Rule 5 selection in December, Fernandez will now miss the entire 2018 season and a good portion of 2019 as well.
