Player Outlook
Yet another product of the Guardians' pitching factory, Tanner Bibee burst onto the prospect radar in 2022 and followed up with a 2.98 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 141:45 K:BB across 142 innings (25 starts) in his first taste of the majors last season. He began 2023 at Triple-A Columbus but was up with Cleveland by late April, and he was impressive before hip inflammation ended his season in mid-September. A 3.66 xERA and 4.22 xFIP indicate some regression could be on the horizon, especially given he stranded a likely unsustainable 80.0 percent of baserunners (that figure would rank fourth in MLB for qualified starters). Still, the performance of the young right-hander as a rookie can't be overstated, and he should be able to improve his approach in his sophomore campaign. An equal or better effort in 2024 wouldn't be surprising in his age-24 season, especially with the Guardians' track record of building up and maintaining pitching prospects.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Knocked around in spring debut

Bibee gave up two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out three over 1.2 innings versus the Giants on Sunday. Bibee's spring debut was forgettable, though the strikeouts were a bright spot. The right-hander ended last season on the 60-day injured list due to right hip inflammation and started slowly in spring training. Unless he has a truly awful Cactus League slate, Bibee figures to open the season in the Guardians' rotation.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Shifts to 60-day IL

Bibee (hip) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Sunday. The Guardians needed to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for the return of Triston McKenzie. Bibee had already been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to right hip inflammation.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Season may be over

Bibee (hip) will not travel with the Guardians to Kansas City, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports. Withers adds that Bibee's season may be over, which is not surprising if he's forced to miss any amount of time this late in the season. The rookie has been excellent with a 2.98 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 141:45 K:BB through 142 innings this year while posting a 10-4 record. Bibee's spot in the rotation could be filled by Shane Bieber (elbow) or Triston McKenzie (elbow) if the Guardians want to bring them back before the end of the season, which may be up in the air as Cleveland is seven games behind Minnesota for the AL Central lead. The Guardians have yet to officially announce any details regarding Bibee's status going forward.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Strong start goes to waste

Bibee (10-4) allowed two runs on two hits and struck out eight without walking a batter over seven innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Angels. Bibee was sharp, though he also committed two balks. The runs against him came on a sacrifice fly and a groundout. Bibee has gone at least five innings and allowed no more than three runs in any of his last 15 starts, and this was just his second loss in that impressive span. The rookie is at a 3.03 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 137:45 K:BB through 136.2 innings over 24 starts this season. Bibee's projected for a home start versus the Rangers in his next outing.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Delivers win No. 10

Bibee (10-3) picked up the win Friday, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk over six innings in a 5-2 victory over the Blue Jays. He struck out five. Solo homers by George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero accounted for the only damage off Bibee, who produced his fifth quality start in his last seven outings. The rookie right-hander has a 2.47 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 40:9 K:BB through 43.2 innings over that stretch with a 5-1 record, and he'll look to keep his second-half surge going when he next takes the mound, which is likely to come next week in Minnesota.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Strikes out six in loss

Bibee (9-3) took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over five innings in a 4-3 loss against the Tigers. He struck out six. The 24-year-old gave up a three-run homer to Kerry Carpenter in the first inning but kept Detroit off the board for the remainder of his outing. Bibee allowed just three additional baserunners after the long ball and retired the last eight batters he faced; however, Cleveland didn't provide much run support, and Bibee was tagged with the loss. In seven starts since the All-Star break, the rookie standout owns a 4-1 record with a 2.47 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and an impressive 41:9 K:BB across 43.2 innings. He is projected to face Toronto on the road next week.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Snags seventh win

Bibee (7-2) earned the win Thursday, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over 6.2 innings against the White Sox. He struck out six. Bibee was sharp Thursday, with Jake Burger providing all of Chicago's offense with a pair of home runs. The 24-year-old Bibee is now 5-0 over his last seven starts (41.1 innings), pitching to a 2.18 ERA with 46 strikeouts in that span. Overall, his ERA is down to 3.11 with a 1.19 WHIP and 91:31 K:BB across 16 starts (89.2 innings) this season. Bibee will look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week in Houston.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Fans nine in 5.2 frames

Bibee (5-2) earned the win over the Cubs on Saturday, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out nine batters over 5.2 scoreless innings. Bibee struck out two of the three batters he faced in the sixth inning, but he gave up a one-out infield single and wasn't allowed to finish the frame. That cost him a quality start, though the rookie right-hander nonetheless shined, tying a career high with nine punchouts while recording his first scoreless MLB appearance. Bibee has cemented his place in the Guardians' rotation by allowing just one earned run over his past 11.2 frames across two starts, notching a 16:6 K:BB over that span. He's impressed with a 3.46 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 67:23 K:BB in 65 innings overall this season.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Another strong start

Bibee (4-2) earned the win Saturday, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks over six innings against the Brewers. He struck out seven. After giving up five homers over his last five appearances, Bibee kept the ball in the park Saturday and managed to hold the Brewers without an extra-base hit. The rookie has been quite impressive to start the campaign, allowing one earned run in five of his 11 starts while posting an 8.80 K/9 through 59.1 innings. His lone blemish has been his control, as he's dished out at least three walks four times. Bibee's tentatively scheduled to make his next appearance against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Gets back in win column

Bibee (3-2) earned the win over the Diamondbacks on Sunday, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out six over five innings. After a disastrous start Tuesday versus the Padres, it was good to see Bibee submit a decent effort. It still wasn't very efficient -- he needed 105 pitches (65 strikes) to complete five frames -- but he had plenty of support from the Guardians' offense. Bibee now has a 4.05 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 51:17 K:BB over 53.1 innings through his first 10 major-league starts. He's not dominating opponents, but he's done enough to hold down a spot at the back end of the rotation. Bibee's next start is projected to be at home versus the Brewers.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Fans six in no-decision

Bibee tossed five innings against Minnesota on Thursday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out six batters over five innings. He didn't factor in the decision. Bibee's three-game quality-start streak came to an end, but he fared relatively well. The rookie right-hander began the outing with three scoreless innings before Minnesota tagged him for three runs across the fourth and fifth, resulting in his removal. This was just the second time Bibee has yielded more than two runs in his seven major-league starts, which speaks to his steadiness so far for Cleveland. He's posted a 3.20 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 40:10 K:BB in 39.1 innings overall, and though both Triston McKenzie (shoulder) and Aaron Civale (oblique) are slated to rejoin the rotation this week, Bibee's starting spot figures to be be safe with Cal Quantrill (shoulder) headed to the IL.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Excellent again Saturday

Bibee allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out nine batters over six innings in a no-decision against St. Louis on Saturday. Bibee stifled the Cardinals' bats throughout the contest, but a second-inning solo home run by Brendan Donovan was enough to hold him to a no-decision. The right-hander racked up an impressive 19 swinging strikes en route to a career-high nine punchouts, and he picked up his third consecutive quality start. Bibee has had one bad outing this season -- a 3.2-inning, four-run effort against Detroit on May 8 -- but has otherwise been fantastic. Overall, he's posted a 2.88 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 34:9 K:BB across 35.1 frames.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Delivers quality start

Bibee didn't factor in the decision in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Mets. He allowed two runs on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts across six innings. The 23-year-old threw 62 of his 99 pitches for strikes and struggled to find the zone at times with four free passes, but he was able to limit the damage to two runs. It's the second time in five starts Bibee has walked four batters, but he hasn't issued a single walk in his other three outings. He's off to a strong start in his first taste of the big leagues with a 3.18 ERA and 25:8 K:BB over 28.1 frames.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Sharp in no-decision

Bibee did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on two hits and zero walks over 7.2 innings against the Angels. He struck out seven. Bibee was dominant Sunday, shutting out the Angels until the eighth inning. It was a strong bounce-back effort from the rookie right-hander after he allowed four runs in 3.2 innings in his last outing. Bibee has now allowed two runs or fewer in three of his first four Major-League starts. He's 1-1 with a 3.22 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 22:4 K:BB through 22.1 innings. Bibee has certainly done his part to earn a permanent spot in Cleveland's rotation, even when Aaron Civale (oblique) and Triston McKenzie (shoulder) are ready to return. He's currently lined up to face the Mets in his next outing.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Fades late in no-decision

Bibee didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Yankees, giving up two runs on four hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out five without walking a batter. Making his second career MLB start, Bibee was unfazed by pitching in Yankee Stadium and blanked New York for five innings before fellow rookie Anthony Volpe tagged him for a homer in the bottom of the sixth. Bibee has been outstanding since his promotion, posting a 13:0 K:BB through his first 11 big-league innings, and he'll look to keep rolling in a home start early next week against the Tigers.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Possible waiver wire pickups

Tanner Bibee locked up the Rockies with his slider in his big-league debut Wednesday, generating 13 called strikes and seven swinging strikes with that one pitch. The big question now is whether he gets to stay in a rotation that already had five healthy arms. Manager Terry Francona at least confirmed Bibee will be with the team for a few days while they try to figure out their rotation plans. Part of the reason they face this dilemma is because they got an equally impressive debut from Logan Taylor Allen on Sunday, and he too remains on the roster. The simplest solution would be to option Peyton Battenfield, or they could also move on from Zach Plesac finally. But even if we learn tomorrow that Bibee is going down, you have to think it won't be for long.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Stars in debut, should stay in bigs

Bibee (1-0) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one run on six hits and zero walks over 5.2 innings during a 4-1 victory over Colorado. He struck out eight. With the Guardians playing their sixth game in five days Wednesday, Bibee was promoted from Triple-A Columbus to make the start in the series finale with Colorado. The 23-year-old was sharp and composed during his MLB debut, with the lone run on his ledger coming after a leadoff double and a bloop base hit in the sixth. He was taken out after inducing a double-play ball and ended with eight strikeouts, displaying the swing-and-miss stuff that led to a stellar first season in professional ball in 2022. Bibee and Logan Allen both impressed during their respective MLB debuts within the past few days, and at least for the short term, the two youngsters look as though they'll have the opportunity to stick around with the big club. Per Mandy Bell of MLB.com, Guardians manager Terry Francona said after Wednesday's game that Bibee will remain with the team for its upcoming road trip, even though an exact plan for the right-hander's next opportunity to pitch hasn't yet been nailed down.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Headed to Triple-A

Bibee is opening the year with Triple-A Columbus, MLB.com reports. Per the report, Gavin Williams will be opening the year at Double-A Akron, so Bibee is the current favorite to be the first of the duo to reach the majors in 2023. While the 24-year-old righty is a highly touted prospect, he may have to bide his time for a couple months, as evidenced by the team's decision to add Hunter Gaddis to the big-league rotation in the wake of Triston McKenzie's shoulder injury. In addition to Gaddis, the Guardians have rotation candidates Konnor Pilkington and Joey Cantillo on the 40-man roster. Logan Allen is a non-40-man candidate due to his strong spring and experience at Triple-A last year.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Dominating in Double-A

Bibee has put up a 1.29 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 57:9 K:BB through 55.2 innings in 10 starts since his promotion to Double-A Akron. Those are spectacular returns, though they come with the caveat that Bibee hasn't struck out nearly as many hitters as he did while cruising through High-A -- his K/9 at the lower level was 13.1, and it's 9.3 in Double-A. The other caveat is that Bibee is a 23-year-old college arm in his first professional season. That said, he's touched 99 mph with his fastball this year, and there's certainly room for that in the big leagues. Bibee's ultimate role remains an open question, but he's showing great command of good stuff, and that makes him an intriguing dynasty prospect.
