Phoenix Sanders: Cut by San Francisco
The Giants released Sanders on Friday.
Sanders reached the big leagues for the first time last season as a member of the Rays and made eight appearances, but he's now been cut by two organizations while pitching exclusively at the Triple-A level. Between stops with the Orioles' and Giants' top affiliates, Sanders has accrued a 5.79 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 23.1 innings.

Giants' Phoenix Sanders: Inks minors deal with Giants
Sanders signed a minor-league contract Thursday with the Giants.
Sanders will be stationed at Triple-A Sacramento for now, but he could eventually get an opportunity in San Francisco given the team's poor bullpen work. The 27-year-old right-hander posted a 3.07 ERA with 12 strikeouts across his first 14.2 major-league innings last season with the Rays. However, his minor-league numbers from 2022 weren't nearly as encouraging with 22 earned runs allowed in 27 outings.

Sanders was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk on Monday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
He'll remain in Baltimore's organization upon clearing waivers after the Orioles designated him for assignment Saturday. The Orioles previously claimed Sanders off waivers from the Rays on Aug. 24, but he pitched exclusively at Triple-A Norfolk before losing his spot on the 40-man roster.

Sanders ceded his spot on the 40-man roster to right-hander Nick Anderson (elbow), who was activated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Durham. If he passes through waivers, Sanders will stick around in Durham with Anderson and work as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen. Sanders sports a 3.07 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 14.2 innings with the big club this season, but he's been less successful over a larger sample at Triple-A (5.40 ERA, 1.37 WHIP in 30 innings).

Sanders likely wouldn't have been available out of the bullpen for the next day or two after he covered 1.2 innings and tossed 44 pitches in Sunday's 10-5 loss to the Reds, so the Rays elected to swap him off the active roster for a fresh arm. Right-hander Luke Bard was recalled from Durham in a corresponding move.

Sanders was unable to work a second inning Monday against the Athletics due to a tight back, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. He struck out three and gave up a hit in a scoreless inning.
Skipper Kevin Cash stated after the game that Sanders likely would have been sent back out for another inning had his back not become an issue. According to Topkin, Sanders' back injury is believed to be significant enough to send him to the injured list. The team should have more information on the right-hander's availability moving forward after further evaluation.

Sanders made his big-league debut Thursday after the team selected his contract earlier in the day day. He allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base -- two on a single and the other on a free pass -- which resulted in a run crossing the plate. However, he settled in from there to retire the final seven hitters he faced. Sanders has worked as a reliever while climbing his way through the Rays' system, and it looks like he could occupy a multi-inning relief role during his time with the big-league club.
