Gilbreath (elbow) pitched in a second simulated game at extended spring training Friday, MLB.com reports. Manager Bud Black noted that the session went well and that Gilbreath suffered no setbacks. Gilbreath is likely to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque in the coming days and could return by late April.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Headed for late-April return

Gilbreath (elbow) threw a live batting practice session Tuesday, MLB.com reports. Gilbreath is recovering from Tommy John surgery, with his latest throwing session lasting between 20 and 25 pitches. He escaped without any setbacks and is expected to throw again by the close of the current week. The next step could be a rehab appearance, with his ultimate goal being a return from the injured list by late April.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Lands on 15-day IL

The Rockies placed Gilbreath (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Gilbreath is still working his way back from March 2023 Tommy John surgery, although the plan had been for him to resume facing hitters this week. It's not clear when the left-hander might be ready for his season debut, but the Rockies' decision not to place him on the 60-day IL suggests that he has a chance to pitch from Colorado before the end of May.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Making progress

Gilbreath (elbow) is expected to face hitters by late March, MLB.com reports. Gilbreath underwent Tommy John surgery in March of 2023 and is progressing in his recovery. He'll begin the season on the injured list, though it's unclear how long he'll remain sidelined in the new campaign.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Playing catch again

Gilbreath (elbow) was cleared to resume playing catch shortly after the All-Star break and was throwing off flat ground from up to 90 feet as of July 29, MLB.com reports. After undergoing Tommy John surgery March 14, Gilbreath isn't a candidate to pitch for the Rockies in 2023, and his absence could even stretch into the early portion of the 2024 season. The fact that he's been able to begin a throwing program four months after surgery can at least be viewed as a positive sign at this early stage of his recovery.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Will undergo Tommy John surgery

Gilbreath (elbow) announced Tuesday that he will undergo Tommy John surgery, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. It was announced late last week that Gilbreath would likely need to undergo the operation, but the southpaw sought a second opinion before announcing the decision. Because of the surgery, he'll miss all of the 2023 season and could miss the start of the 2024 campaign as well. Gilbreath will likely be placed on the 60-day injured list whenever the team needs an opening on the 40-man roster.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Likely needs Tommy John surgery

Gilbreath (elbow) said Thursday that he will likely require Tommy John surgery, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Gilbreath is still seeking more opinions on his left elbow, but the writing is probably on the wall for him to go under the knife. He missed time down the stretch in 2022 due to what was diagnosed as a flexor strain, then aggravated the injury when he began mound work this spring at Rockies camp. If the 26-year-old has surgery, he would miss the entire 2023 campaign as well as the start of next season.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Enters camp healthy

Gilbreath (elbow) is healthy to begin spring training and threw a bullpen session Sunday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Gilbreath was sidelined down the stretch by a flexor strain in his left elbow last season, but he had a healthy offseason and is good to go for the start of spring training. The 26-year-old had 12 holds with a 4.19 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 49:26 K:BB across 43 innings last year.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Not returning this season

Rockies manager Bud Black said Monday that Gilbreath (elbow) won't return from the 15-day injured list before the end of the season, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. Gilbreath is due to receive a platelet-rich plasma injection to address his left elbow flexor strain and is expected to avoid surgery, but with just a month left in the season, he won't have sufficient time to complete his rehab program for the injury before the Rockies wrap up their schedule in the first week of October. The 26-year-old southpaw turned in a 4.19 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 49:26 K:BB to go with 12 holds in 43 innings over 47 relief appearances before he landed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 28.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Back to big-league club

Gilbreath was recalled by the Rockies on Saturday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Gilbreath had a brief stint with the big-league club earlier this season, but he allowed six earned runs while posting a 3:4 K:BB across 3.1 innings out of the bullpen. Justin Lawrence was optioned in the corresponding move.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Demoted Wednesday

The Rockies optioned Gilbreath to Triple-A Albuquerque on Wednesday. He was sent out to the minors to create a spot on the 28-man active roster for Ryan Feltner, who was called up from Albuquerque in advance of his start Wednesday in Philadelphia. After returning April 18 from a brief stint on the COVID-19 injured list, Gilbreath made four appearances out of the Colorado bullpen and gave up six earned runs over 3.1 innings.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Serves up homer

Gilbreath allowed two earned runs on one hit and one walk across two-thirds of an inning Wednesday against the Phillies. Gilbreath was activated from the COVID-19 injured list Monday, so this outing marked his season debut. He entered the game in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and the score tied. He hit the first batter he faced to force in a run, but the big blow came two hitters later when he allowed a three-run home run to Johan Camargo. Gilbreath was solid out of the Rockies' bullpen in 2021, maintaining a 3.38 ERA and 1.31 WHIP across 42.2 frames while also tallying four holds. He should hold a similar role in 2022.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Ready for 2022 debut

Gilbreath (illness) was activated from the injured list Monday, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports. Gilbreath began the year on the COVID-19 injured list, but he's since been activated after making a rehab appearance for the Triple-A Isotopes on Sunday. He issued a walk and struck out one in a scoreless frame against Tacoma.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Slated to begin rehab assignment

Gilbreath (illness) will head to Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday to begin a rehab assignment, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Although Gilbreath rejoined the Rockies on Friday and tossed a bullpen session, he'll need to make at least one appearance with the minor-league club before he's cleared to make his 2022 debut. The Rockies haven't yet indicated when they plan to activate Gilbreath from the COVID-19 injured list, but it's possible that will happen as early as this week.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Tosses bullpen Friday

Gilbreath (illness) has rejoined the Rockies and threw a bullpen Friday, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. Gilbreath began the regular season on the COVID-19 injured list after testing positive for the virus, but he's now been cleared to rejoin the team. While it's not yet clear whether he'll be activated prior to Friday's game against the Cubs, he should be available to make his season debut soon.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Solid results this spring

Gilbreath has allowed a run on six hits and no walks while striking out four in four innings across four relief appearances this spring. Gilbreath made his major-league debut in 2021 and logged a 3.38 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 42.2 innings across 47 appearances (one start). In spite of his encouraging results during Cactus League play, he's a lackluster fantasy option due to his likely role as a middle reliever in 2022.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Picks up second win

Gilbreath (2-1) allowed a walk and struck out one in two-thirds of an inning to earn the win Friday versus Washington. Gilbreath loaded the bases with a walk and allowed an inherited runner from Jhoulys Chacin to score on a fielder's choice before ending the eighth inning. In the ninth, Colorado retook the lead, putting Gilbreath in line for his second win of the year. The southpaw has not been charged with a run in his last 14.2 innings, allowing five hits and seven walks while ringing up 14 strikeouts in that span. He has a 3.79 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 36:20 K:BB in 35.2 innings overall while adding a save and three holds.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Extends scoreless streak

Gilbreath worked around a walk to record the final two outs of the seventh inning in his relief appearance Wednesday in the Rockies' 3-2 win over Atlanta. The scoreless appearance was Gilbreath's 14th in a row, and the rookie lefty has struck out 13 while allowing only 11 baserunners over that 14-inning stretch. Carlos Estevez appears to have settled in as the Rockies' new closer in place of the deposed Daniel Bard, but Gilbreath looks like he'll at least factor more prominently into the setup mix in light of his recent success.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Tosses one inning as opener

Gilbreath started Wednesday's game against the Angels, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over an inning. The 25-year-old operated as an opener Wednesday after the Rockies were forced to go with a bullpen game after Chi Chi Gonzalez (undisclosed) was placed on the COVID-19 IL. Gilbreath broke a streak of four straight scoreless outings and now owns a 6.41 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 19:13 K:BB over 19.2 innings.

  • Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Earns rare save

Gilbreath struck out a batter in a perfect 10th inning Friday to record the save against the Dodgers. Gilbreath earned the first save of his young career after Daniel Bard blew the save chance in the ninth. The 25-year-old had a quick 1-2-3 outing and struck out Zach McKinstry in the process. He now owns a 6.62 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 18:11 K:BB over 17.2 innings and likely won't be considered for many saves in the future with such poor numbers.
