  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Wraps '24 with scoreless efforts

Santos, who was activated from the injured list last Monday, subsequently made two relief appearances during which he fired two scoreless innings while allowing one hit and recording one strikeout. Santos got back on the bump at the major-league level for the first time since July 31 when he earned his second hold with a scoreless seventh inning in the series opener against the Athletics on Friday. He logged one more frame during Sunday's regular-season finale, getting through the eighth inning on just nine pitches. It was a modest but encouraging season-ending sample for Santos, who didn't make his 2024 debut until July due to a lat strain and then missed nearly two months with a biceps injury. The hard-throwing right-hander played on a one-year deal this season, and it remains to be seen if the Mariners will want to take another look considering Santos logged all of 7.1 innings across eight appearances due to the injuries.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Activated from IL

The Mariners reinstated Santos (biceps) from the 15-day injured list Monday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. Santos had been on the injured list since Aug. 2 due to right biceps inflammation. He began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma in early September, and across six outings he allowed one run on two hits and seven walks while striking out six across 5.1 frames. Santos has joined the Mariners in Houston and will operate out of the bullpen as Seattle makes a final push for a wild-card spot. To make room on the big-league roster for Santos, left-hander Jhonathan Diaz was optioned to the minors.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Two more scoreless rehab outings

Santos (biceps) continued his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma with one-inning scoreless appearances Wednesday and Saturday, allowing one hit and two walks while recording a strikeout over that span. Santos has now logged 5.1 innings across six appearances with the Rainiers, allowing just one run on two hits but also posting a crooked 6:7 K:BB. While the spotty control is somewhat of a concern, Santos' arm appears primed for a return to the big-league bullpen as the Mariners make a push for a wild-card spot during the final week of the regular season.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Another rehab appearance Sunday

Santos (biceps) fired two-thirds scoreless innings in Triple-A Tacoma's loss to Oklahoma City on Sunday, issuing two walks and recording a strikeout. Santos made his second rehab appearance in three days for the Rainiers and bounced back from having allowed a run over two-thirds of an inning in Friday's outing. The right-hander threw another 18 pitches Sunday, although only seven landed for strikes. Santos has exhibited control issues in each of his last two appearances, but from a workload standpoint, he certainly seems to be ready for activation.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Clean inning with Tacoma

Santos (biceps) fired a scoreless sixth inning in Triple-A Tacoma's extra-inning loss to Oklahoma City on Tuesday, allowing two walks and recording a strikeout. The right-hander threw 21 pitches overall in a laborious inning, but the silver lining to his control issues was the fact his arm got a good test. Santos has now made two appearances with the Rainiers of an inning apiece, and the Mariners may determine he only needs another turn or two before being deemed ready for activation.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Starts rehab assignment

Santos (biceps) started his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma against Albuquerque on Friday, firing a scoreless eighth inning during which he allowed a hit and a walk. Santos got some good work in during his first game action since July 31, throwing 15 pitches during his one frame. The right-hander may need only a couple more setback-free outings before being deemed ready for activation and potentially assisting the Mariners' bullpen down the final stretch of the regular season.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Throwing at Arizona facility

Santos (biceps) has begun throwing at the Mariners' extended spring training in Arizona but remains without a timetable for return, MLB.com reports. Mariners general manager Justin Hollander noted Monday that the team's medical staff doesn't believe there's a kinetic chain issue with Santos after he also missed over three months earlier this season with a right latissimus dorsi strain. However, whether Santos can return before the end of the season remains an open question, and given his checkered medical history the last few months, the team may opt to play it safe.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Placed on injured list

The Mariners placed Santos on the 15-day injured list with right biceps inflammation Friday, retroactive to Thursday. Santos' bicep caused him to make an early exit from Wednesday's game, and it will now officially keep him sidelined for at least another two weeks. JT Chargois, who was recently acquired in a trade with Miami, was added to the active roster to fill the opening in Seattle's bullpen.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Exits early Wednesday

Santos was removed from Wednesday's game against the Angels due to an apparent injury, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports. Santos was called for a balk in the eighth inning and looked to be in pain immediately afterward, prompting a visit from a trainer. It wasn't immediately apparent what was bothering him.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Comes off 60-day IL

The Mariners activated Santos (lat) from the 60-day injured list Monday. Santos has been sidelined all season while recovering from a right lat strain. He made just two rehab appearances, striking out a pair of two scoreless frames. Santos reportedly reached 99 miles per hour on the radar gun in Saturday's outing with High-A Everett, helping to convince the Mariners that he was ready to go. The 24-year-old should eventually find himself in high-leverage situations for Seattle, but he could be eased into such spots. Santos will be making his Mariners debut when he gets into a game after being acquired via trade from the White Sox over the offseason.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Scoreless frame in rehab debut

Santos (lat) fired a scoreless inning during Triple-A Tacoma's win over Salt Lake on Tuesday, allowing a hit and recording a strikeout. Santos' long-awaited return to game action consisted of 13 pitches, nine which he located for strikes. Per reports from Triple-A Tacoma play-by-play announcer Mike Curto relayed by MLB.com, Santos' fastball was regularly at 97-99 mph during the outing, while his slider clocked in the 87-90 mph range. Santos is slated to make at least a couple of more rehab appearances before activation is considered, and he's expected to be handled with caution once he does return to the big-league roster. "We're going to have to be very guarded on how we use him and kind of build him up," manager Scott Servais said. "It'll be an inning at a time here or there. There will be some days off in between."

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Rehab assignment pending

Santos (lat) will start a rehab assignment at Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports. Santos threw a live BP session Friday without a setback, paving the way for a minor-league rehab stint. Considering that he's been out since spring training, Santos should require several rehab appearances before being reinstated. It's unclear if he'll be able to return prior to the All-Star break.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Continues ramping up activity level

Santos (lat) has continued throwing bullpens in recent days and is playing catch out to 105 feet between those sessions, MLB.com reports. Santos appears well on track to facing live hitters soon, given his cumulative level of activity recently. The right-hander remains without a timetable for return and could require a full-length rehab assignment whenever he's deemed ready to take that step since he's been sidelined since spring training.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Expected back in July

General manager Justin Hollander said Friday that Santos (lat) will likely remain out until July, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. Santos has primarily been throwing from flat ground at the Mariners' complex in Arizona. He will now move his rehab from Arizona to Seattle, though it remains unclear how far away the 24-year-old righty is from throwing off a mound. Santos has been on the IL all season due to a strained right lat.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Throwing from 75 feet

Santos (lat) has progressed to throwing from 75 feet and could soon up his distance to 105 feet, SeattleSports.com reports. General manager Justin Hollander noted Friday that the hope is Santos will be able to boost that distance at some point in the coming week, after which he'd progress to throwing off a mound. Hollander added the team would continue to be "somewhat conservative" with the right-hander's recovery, which eventually is expected to culminate in a lengthy rehab assignment given he missed the entirety of the Cactus League slate.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Inching toward mound work

Santos (lat) has started a throwing program and is getting closer to beginning mound work, MLB.com reports. "I don't want to get into much more detail on timelines like that, but it has been very positive," manager Scott Servais said. Servais added that Santos is a "little bit" behind fellow sidelined reliever Matt Brash (elbow) in terms of his progress, but the Mariners' skipper seems encouraged overall by Santos' trajectory. Santos never did see Cactus League action this spring, so he'll be in line for what could be a full-length rehab assignment whenever he reaches that point in his recovery.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Shelved with lat strain

The Mariners placed Santos (lat) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Santos was shut down March 11 after he was diagnosed with a right lat strain. He was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Thursday, and if the testing reveals that the inflammation in his lat has subsided, Santos could be cleared to start at throwing program in the coming days. Whenever he's able to make his Seattle debut, the right-hander will likely deployed as a setup man in front of closer Andres Munoz.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: MRI date set

Santos (lat) will undergo an MRI on Thursday and the results will determine the next steps in his recovery, MLB.com reports. If the inflammation in Santos' lat has subsided sufficiently, the Mariners will begin mapping out a throwing program. The right-hander still projects to be sidelined for several more weeks, as he'll need to eventually complete a rehab assignment at the minor-league level before being deemed ready for activation.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Slated for MRI

Santos (lat) will receive an MRI within the next few days, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Santos strained his right lat during a bullpen session earlier in spring camp, and his MRI will determine if the inflammation has gone down enough for him to resume his throwing program. Santos will begin the year on the injured list, but his absence isn't expected to extend more than a month or two into the regular season.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Not yet in rehab routine

Santos, who suffered a mild lat strain Monday, is still "waiting to get things calmed down" before officially beginning a rehab routine, MLB.com reports. The update comes directly from manager Scott Servais, who's counting on Santos to play a key seventh- and eighth-inning role this season. Santos has already been ruled out for Opening Day, however, and it's likely extra caution is taken with the restart date of his baseball activities considering he's also already dealt with a shoulder problem this spring.
