  • James Marvel: Cut by Texas

The Rangers released Marvel on Sunday.

Marvel's stint with the Texas organization lasted just over a month after he signed a minor-league deal with the Rangers on May 7. He made six starts for Triple-A Round Rock and was lit up to the tune of a 7.88 ERA and 2.12 WHIP across 24 innings.

  • Rangers' James Marvel: Lands with Texas

Marvel signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Sunday and was assigned to Triple-A Round Rock.

Marvel, whose lone MLB action came with Pittsburgh in 2019, was most recently with the High Point Rockers of the independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball before the Rangers elected to bring him into their organization. The 29-year-old right-hander immediately settled into the Round Rock rotation, as he started Sunday's game against Reno and struck out one over three innings while allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks.

  • Phillies' James Marvel: Joins Philadelphia

Marvel signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies on Friday.

Marvel's lone big-league action to date came in 2019, when he posted an 8.31 ERA and 1.79 WHIP across 17.1 innings with Pittsburgh. He's expected to open the 2022 season as a member of the Triple-A Lehigh Valley rotation.

  • Pirates' James Marvel: Slated to pitch in spring opener

Marvel (forearm) is scheduled to pitch in relief Sunday in the Pirates' Grapefruit League game against the Orioles, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.

Marvel's inclusion on the pitching schedule indicates that he reported to spring training at full health after he suffered a strained right forearm while working out at the Pirates' alternate site last summer. He'll be competing for a spot in the Bucs' Opening Day bullpen, but Marvel is most likely headed to Triple-A Indianapolis to open the 2021 campaign.

  • Pirates' James Marvel: Dealing with forearm strain

Marvel is dealing with a strained right forearm, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.

Marvel apparently suffered the injury a couple of weeks ago. While the severity of the issue is not yet known, forearm injuries can often be the precursor to a significant surgery.

  • Pirates' James Marvel: Reassigned to minors camp

Marvel was reassigned to the Pirates' minor-league camp Monday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.

After making his major-league debut in 2019, Marvel was able to open spring training in major-league camp, but he'll head to minors camp after posting a 19.64 ERA and 3.00 WHIP over 3.2 innings this spring. While the right-hander has shown to be effective in the minors over his past seasons, he'll need to generate more consistency against upper-level competition before being considered for a full-time role with the Pirates' pitching staff.

  • Pirates' James Marvel: Outrighted off roster

Marvel was outrighted to the minors Monday.

Marvel made his MLB debut in 2019, posting an 8.31 ERA over four starts while striking out just 10.7 percent of opposing batters. He'll likely begin the 2020 season in the minors.

  • Pirates' James Marvel: Delivers five quality frames

Marvel gave up two runs on six hits and two walks across five innings during Saturday's loss to the Reds. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision.

Marvel surrendered 12 runs in his previous two starts but he'll finish his season on a positive note after Saturday's outing. The 26-year-old made four starts in his first taste of the big leagues and had an 0-3 record with a 8.31 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 9:6 K:BB over 17.1 innings.

  • Pirates' James Marvel: Early exit in loss

Marvel (0-3) took the loss Saturday, giving up five runs on six hits and two walks over 3.1 innings as the Pirates were routed 10-1 by the Brewers. He struck out three.

The 26-year-old right-hander put together a nice season in the high minors, but that success hasn't translated to the majors in September. Marvel has a 10.22 ERA and 7:4 K:BB through 12.1 innings over his first three MLB outings, and he's lined up to make one more start in 2019, at home against the Reds on Sept. 28.

  • Pirates' James Marvel: Saddled with second loss

Marvel (0-2) allowed seven runs on nine hits with no walks and two strikeouts across four innings while taking the loss against the Cubs on Saturday.

In his second major-league start, Marvel got into trouble in the second inning as the Cubs got to him for four runs via a three-run double by Nick Castellanos and an RBI single from Kris Bryant. He later allowed home runs to Ben Zobrist and Bryant before departing after 79 pitches. The rocky outing leaves Marvel with a 9.00 ERA through his first nine major-league innings. He's scheduled to be on the hill again Friday at Milwaukee.

  • Pirates' James Marvel: Draws another start

Marvel will stick in the rotation to make a start Saturday against the Cubs.

Marvel was summoned from Triple-A Indianapolis to make a spot start last weekend in place of an injured Mitch Keller (wrist) and got the job done in his MLB debut, limiting the Cardinals to two runs on four hits and two walks over five innings. After Keller was hit hard in his return to the mound Tuesday against the Giants, the Pirates have apparently decided to push back his next turn, if not remove him from the rotation entirely. Marvel will thus assume Keller's spot in the pitching schedule once more but may need another quality showing to earn additional starts over the final two weeks of the campaign.

  • Pirates' James Marvel: Loses MLB debut

Marvel (0-1) allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts across five innings while taking a loss against the Cardinals on Sunday.

For a debut against a team contending for a division crown, things went fairly well for Marvel. He kept the ball in the park, only walked a couple and reached the end of the fifth, but the Pirates offense didn't support him. Marvel started Sunday because Mitch Keller needed more time to recover from a wrist injury, but Marvel should receive more opportunities to start down the stretch. He's scheduled to be on the hill again Friday at the Cubs.

  • Pirates' James Marvel: Joins Pirates for Sunday's start

Marvel had his contract selected from Triple-A Indianapolis ahead of his Sunday start against the Cardinals, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.

The 25-year-old was tabbed to pitch the series finale since Mitch Keller (wrist) had his scheduled start pushed back. Marvel had a 2.67 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 53:22 K:BB in 11 starts after being promoted to Triple-A in July. According to Berry, the right-hander is set to receive four starts over the final few weeks of the season for Pittsburgh.

  • Pirates' James Marvel: Starting Sunday

Marvel will start Sunday against the Cardinals, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Mitch Keller has been pushed back after taking a line drive to the wrist in his last start, opening the door for Marvel to make his major-league debut. A 36th-round pick in 2015, Marvel advanced to Triple-A in July and went on to post a 2.67 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 53:22 K:BB in 11 starts for the Indianapolis Indians. He will need to be officially added to the roster ahead of Sunday's game.
