Player Outlook
Once thought of as a top pitching prospect with the Yankees, Deivi Garcia's stock has fallen to the point where he was claimed off waivers by the White Sox in August of 2023. The 24-year-old was used out of the bullpen with Chicago, throwing 9.1 innings across six appearances while striking out seven batters and amassing a 2.89 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. It seems that Garcia will continue out of the bullpen moving forward which hurts his fantasy appeal as the path to saves isn't readily apparent. Walk rate remains an issue for Garcia as he posted a 7.71 BB/9 during his stint with the White Sox.

  • White Sox's Deivi Garcia: Picks up rare save

Garcia earned the save in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader versus Kansas City after allowing a hit and a walk over two scoreless innings. Closer Michael Kopech and setup men Jordan Leasure and Steven Wilson all pitched in Wednesday's matinee, and Garcia was called upon for the multi-inning save in Game 2. It's just the second save of Garcia's career, and the scoreless outing brings his ERA down to 7.27 and WHIP to 1.62. The 24-year-old is pitching better of late with four straight scoreless appearances, though he likely has a lot more work to do in order to be in the mix regularly for high-leverage chances.

  • White Sox's Deivi Garcia: Gets first look in Chicago

Garcia was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Monday. Garcia has allowed two earned runs with a 17:6 K:BB across nine innings for Charlotte after being claimed off waivers from the Yankees a month ago. The former top prospect has been used almost exclusively in relief in 2023 and will presumably work as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen during his upcoming stint with the White Sox.

  • White Sox's Deivi Garcia: Claimed by White Sox

The White Sox claimed Garcia off waivers from the Yankees on Thursday, Erik Boland of Newsday reports. Garcia didn't figure to make it through waivers once the Yankees designated him for assignment and, sure enough, he gets scooped up by one of the higher waiver priorities. The 24-year-old has seen his star fade since he was a top-100 prospect, but he's a worthwhile reclamation project. Garcia has minor-league options left and presumably will report to Triple-A Charlotte for now.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Gets DFA'd

The Yankees designated Garcia for assignment Monday. Garcia was considered by many to be a top-100 prospect before the 2020 season, but a combination of injuries, poor command and diminished stuff led to him languishing at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for most of the last three seasons. The undersized righty could get scooped up by an organization that sees something with Garcia that they think can be fixed. He turned 24 years old in May and still possesses a fastball that sits at 95 miles per hour in short bursts.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Immediately back to minors

Garcia was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. Garcia was summoned as bullpen depth Thursday, but he was optioned back to the minors the same day. He threw 2.2 scoreless innings against the Orioles, walking three and allowing two hits while striking out one. While he's spent the majority of his season at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Garcia is a long-relief option for the Yankees across the second half of the season.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Summoned to big leagues

Garcia was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. He's taking the roster spot vacated by Randy Vasquez, who was optioned following Wednesday's spot start. Garcia will provide some length in the bullpen as the Yankees approach the All-Star break.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Optioned after three-inning save

The Yankees optioned Garcia to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Wednesday's 11-3 win over the Athletics. The move was made shortly after Garcia picked up a three-inning save Wednesday, when he allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out a pair. The Yankees will make a corresponding move prior to Thursday's game versus the Rays.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Returns to majors

The Yankees recalled Garcia from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre prior to Wednesday's game against the Athletics, Erik Boland of Newsday reports. Once one of the Yankees' top starting pitching prospects, Garcia has transitioned to a full-time relief role this season at Triple-A. Over his 10 appearances out of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre bullpen, Garcia has logged a 4.50 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 18:16 K:BB in 20 innings. He'll likely be relegated to low-leverage spots or mop-up situations out of the New York bullpen while he's up with the parent club.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Optioned to Triple-A level

The Yankees optioned Garcia to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday. Garcia allowed seven runs -- six earned -- in just 8.1 major-league innings last season, though he had been showing well in the Grapefruit League this spring. The 23-year-old right-hander should get a long look with the Yankees at some point in 2023.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Summoned from Triple-A

The Yankees recalled Garcia from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre ahead of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Twins, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. For the twin bill, the Yankees are designating infielder/outfielder Miguel Andujar as their 29th man rather than Garcia, who thus appears poised to remain with the big club beyond Wednesday. A former highly regarded pitching prospect who picked up eight starts for the Yankees between the 2020 and 2021 seasons, the 23-year-old Garcia has seen his long-term outlook take a hit in recent seasons due to poor control in the high minors. He has, however, shown some improvement in that regard in his most recent eight outings between Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Double-A Somerset, turning in a poor 5.12 ERA but a much stronger 1.04 WHIP and 23.7 K-BB%. He's projected to serve as a multi-inning arm out of the bullpen while he's up with the Yankees.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Getting 'reset' at team complex

Garcia (finger) faced live hitters at the Yankees' player development complex earlier this week, and pitching coach Matt Blake stated that the pitcher is getting a "reset" physically, Brendan Kuty of NJ Advance Media reports. Garcia was placed on the 7-day minor-league injured list with a finger injury May 31, but that issue no longer appears to be bothering him. Instead, Blake suggested that the organization is keeping Garcia at the team's complex in order to help him figure things out after a tough start to his season. "They just wanted to pull him out and let him get a little bit of a reset physically," Blake told NJ Advance Media on Wednesday. "Seems like he's in an OK spot mentally and physically, but I do think they're just trying to rework where they're at with him because he had been struggling a little bit." Garcia has posted a 10.38 ERA and 2.26 WHIP over seven starts with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on the campaign.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Goes on IL

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre placed Garcia (finger) on its 7-day injured list Tuesday, Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune reports. Garcia was deactivated after he lost feeling in his fingers during his most recent start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. The right-hander could be dealing with some sort of nerve injury, but the Yankees haven't provided a firm diagnosis at this stage. Once one of the more promising pitching prospects in the organization, Garcia's star has dimmed considerably since he first reached the big leagues in 2020. He's turned in a 10.38 ERA, 2.26 WHIP and 18:16 K:BB across 21.2 innings over his seven starts at Triple-A this season.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Exits with possible injury

Garcia left Friday's Triple-A contest with two outs in the second inning after losing feeling in his fingers, Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune reports. The organization has yet to release an update on Garcia's status, so it's unclear if he suffered an injury or was removed for precautionary reasons. Before his exit, the right-hander allowed three runs and five hits -- all in the second inning -- and didn't walk or strike out any batters. Garcia has struggled in the minors this season, posting a 10.38 ERA, 2.26 WHIP and 18:16 K:BB across 21.2 innings.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Optioned to Triple-A

Garcia was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday. Garcia should serve as rotation depth this season, but there wasn't a role for him to fill right away. He struggled to a 6.85 ERA in 24 outings at the Triple-A level last season, walking 15.6 percent of opposing batters, so he needs to sort out his control before he makes his push for a rotation spot.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Could make Opening Day roster

Garcia has looked good this spring, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated Wednesday that he could "put himself in that mix" for an Opening Day roster spot, Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media reports. Garcia struggled mightily at the Triple-A level last season, posting a 6.85 ERA and 1.88 WHIP over 90.2 innings. He also threw 8.1 frames with the Yankees, giving up six earned runs. However, he looked much better in his first spring outing Wednesday, hurling two scoreless innings during which he allowed only one hit. Beyond those numbers, the right-hander averaged 94.9 mph on his fastball, per Max Goodman of SI.com, after posting a 92.2 mph average velocity on the pitch last season. Further, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports that Garcia altered his mechanics during the offseason and is pitching with more confidence, strengthening the hope that he could bounce back from his difficult 2021 campaign. It's unlikely that Garcia will be handed a starting spot in the rotation to begin the season, but he could at least make the Opening Day roster if he puts together a strong spring, especially since all MLB teams will be allowed to carry two extra players until May 1.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Goes on injured list

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre placed Garcia (undisclosed) on its 7-day injured list Wednesday, Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune reports. No details are available regarding the nature of Garcia's injury, but he'll most likely be sidelined for the rest of the Triple-A club's season, which ends Sept. 30. After a promising six-start sample with the Yankees in 2020, Garcia was expected to vie for a rotation spot with the big club this season, but he ended up losing out to Domingo German in a spring training competition for the fifth starter's role. The 22-year-old righty then failed to perform well enough to merit an extended look in the big leagues, as he compiled a 6.83 ERA and 1.89 WHIP across 89.2 innings with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Demoted after Saturday's start

Garcia (0-2) took the loss Saturday at Detroit and was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barres after the contest. He allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk over 4.1 innings. The 22-year-old was called up ahead of Saturday's contest and will return to Triple-A after a one-day stay in the majors. The right-hander threw 52 of 88 pitches for strikes and was unable to solidify a rotation spot with Corey Kluber (shoulder) sidelined for the foreseeable future. Garcia figures to receive another starting opportunity with the Yankees before too long.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Called up ahead of start

Garcia was recalled by the Yankees ahead of his scheduled start against the Tigers on Saturday. Garcia spent the last month with the Triple-A club and posted a 5.17 ERA and 1.67 WHIP in 15.2 innings across four starts in the minors. He'll return to the Yankees' active roster and could have a chance to solidify a spot in the starting rotation since Corey Kluber (shoulder) is facing an extended absence. Left-hander Justin Wilson (hamstring) was placed on the 10-day injured list as part of a corresponding move.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Demoted following spot start

Garcia was optioned to the Yankees' alternate training site after Monday's start against the Orioles, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. He took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out four over four innings. Baltimore got to Garcia early, as he surrendered a solo home run in the first inning and an RBI double in the second. He struggled to find his command, issuing three free passes and throwing 40 of 65 pitches for strikes. New York should transition back to a traditional five-man rotation following Garcia's demotion.

  • Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Called up to face Orioles

Garcia was officially called up as expected ahead of his scheduled start Monday against the Orioles. The 21-year-old lost the fifth starter job to Domingo German after a poor camp, but the Yankees plan on going with a six-man rotation temporarily, so he should be up for at least a few outings. It's unclear exactly what he'll offer after posting an unremarkable 4.98 ERA in his six-start debut last season, but he lines up with a very interesting two-start week, as he's expected to face the Tigers on Sunday.
