Player Outlook
Last season got off to an inauspicious start for Tejay Antone as he needed a platelet-rich plasma injection for a flexor strain experienced during offseason rehab from undergoing Tommy John surgery in August of 2021. After extending his in season rehab a couple of times, Antone came off the IL on September 1, last having pitched in the majors in June 2021. Antone mustered only five appearances, before returning to the IL with right elbow tendinitis, ending his season in mid-September. It was only 5.2 innings, but Antone yielded just one earned run while fanning seven, prompting the Reds to ink Antone to a one-year, $830,000 deal, avoiding arbitration. Clearly, health is the concern for the two-time Tommy John recoveree. Antone has back of the bullpen stuff, though it remains to be seen if the Reds will slow play his usage.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Shifts to 60-day IL

Antone (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday. The right-hander underwent season-ending surgery to repair the UCL and flexor tendon in his right elbow last week, so it was only a matter of time before he was moved to the 60-day IL. Given the nature of the procedure, Antone may not be ready to pitch in spring training next season.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Undergoes surgery

Antone underwent surgery Friday to repair the UCL and flexor tendon in his right elbow, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Manager David Bell said Antone's procedure went extremely well, though the right-hander is still expected to miss the entire year. He has made just nine appearances across the past three seasons and will now aim to return in 2025.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Slated for another elbow surgery

Antone will undergo surgery Friday to repair a torn tendon and partially torn ligament in his right elbow, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Antone has already had Tommy John surgery twice, with the second one occurring in 2021. He had numerous setbacks after the latter operation and has made just nine appearances at the major-league level since 2022. Now Antone is facing another season-ending surgery.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Lands on 15-day injured list

Antone was placed on the 15-day injured list by the Reds on Monday with right elbow inflammation. Antone had to be pulled from an appearance Sunday versus the Mets and was sent for an MRI. It's not clear whether the results of the imaging are in, but at minimum he'll be on the shelf for the next couple weeks. Antone has been plagued by elbow issues over the past three seasons.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Set for MRI

Antone (elbow) is set to undergo an MRI on his right elbow, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Antone was removed from Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Mets with an apparent elbow injury, which will now lead to him undergoing an MRI in the near future, according to manager David Bell. The 30-year-old entered the game to open the top of the sixth inning, threw one pitch and then was subsequently pulled. Considering the fact that Antone has struggled with elbow issues in the past, Sunday's development is particularly concerning, and his status moving forward will certainly be worth monitoring.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Leaves with apparent injury

Antone was removed from Sunday's game against the Mets with an apparent elbow injury, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The right-hander entered for the sixth inning but threw just one pitch before departing with the injury. It's a potentially ominous development for Antone, who finished last season on the injured list with elbow tendinitis after spending most of the year recovering from Tommy John surgery.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Officially makes roster

Antone has claimed one of the final spots in the Reds' Opening Day bullpen, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. After spending more than two full seasons on the injured list, Antone questioned whether he would ever pitch in a big-league game again. His return from a second Tommy John surgery last year was cut short due to renewed elbow discomfort, but he has earned a roster spot this spring and will be on the Opening Day roster for the first time since 2021. Antone said that he has stopped chasing velocity and embraced a new sinker in light of his injuries. Expect the right-hander to pitch mostly in the middle innings to begin the 2024 campaign.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Plunks two

Antone allowed two unearned runs on one hit and two hit batters over one inning in Thursday's spring game against the Rangers. He struck out one. Antone was called on to open the game after starter Nick Martinez (rib) was scratched. He nearly got out of a first-inning mess, but a TJ Friedl fielding error allowed the two unearned runs to score. Antone appeared in just five games in 2023 after rehabbing from Tommy John elbow surgery and forearm issues, but he's been healthy thus far in camp and will hold down a bullpen spot if that remains true.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Healthy thus far

Antone allowed two runs on four hits and struck out one over two-thirds of an inning in Monday's spring game against the Athletics. Antone has been through an ordeal the last three years, recovering from a second Tommy John elbow surgery, then overcoming a forearm issue that limited him to five September appearances at the big-league level in 2023. He told Mark Sheldon of MLB.com that he's "becoming more of a pitcher instead of a thrower." Indeed, the right-hander that once toiled in the upper 90s is down in the 91-95 mph range this spring. In three spring outings, the 30-year-old Antone has allowed three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five over 2.2 innings.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: No restrictions in spring training

Antone (elbow) is on a normal schedule this spring, Gordon Wittenmyer and Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer report. Antone didn't pitch at all in 2022 following Tommy John surgery and made just 19 total appearances between the majors and minors in 2023. He finished last year on the injured list with right elbow tendinitis but told reporters last week that he's "full go and ready to rock" this spring. Antone has been a dominant reliever when healthy, collecting a career 2.41 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 94:31 K:BB over 74.2 innings covering parts of three major-league seasons. He figures to be in the mix for high-leverage spots in 2024 if he can stay off the IL.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Avoids arbitration

Antone (elbow) signed a one-year, $830,000 contract with the Reds on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Tommy John surgery kept Antone sidelined last season until the beginning of September, and right elbow tendinitis ended his campaign after just five appearances. Antone looked good when he was able to pitch, surrendering one run in 5.2 innings while striking out seven batters.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Not expected back this season

Antone (elbow) is not expected to return from the injured list in 2023, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Manager David Bell did technically leave the door open by calling Antone's chances of a return "remote," but the writing seems to be on the wall for the righty. Antone returned from his second career Tommy John surgery at the start of September but made just five appearances before being shut down with elbow tendinitis.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: MRI reveals tendonitis

Antone has tendonitis in his throwing elbow, MLB.com reports. Antone underwent an MRI on Thursday that confirmed the discomfort that forced him to the 15-day injured list was a bout of tendonitis, a diagnosis that manager David Bell said was "about as good as you can get." The reliever will get treatment and could return before the end of the regular season.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Expects to return this season

Antone (elbow) said Thursday that he expects to return this year, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Antone landed on the 15-day injured list Thursday morning due to soreness in his right elbow, which has twice required Tommy John surgery. He's awaiting the results of an MRI, but the 29-year-old reliever told reporters the injury is "nothing catastrophic" and "just a flareup." Antone will be first eligible for activation Sept. 29, just a few days before the end of the regular season.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Lands back on IL

Antone was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday with right elbow discomfort, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Antone's move back to the IL comes after he exited early in his relief appearance in Wednesday's win over the Tigers with soreness in his pitching elbow. The reliever downplayed the injury, but it's discouraging nonetheless that he's dealing with renewed pain in his elbow considering he's had Tommy John surgery twice. Per Wittenmyer, the Reds are optimistic that Antone will be ready to return from the IL when first eligible Sept. 29, providing an upcoming MRI doesn't reveal anything concerning.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Dealing with elbow injury

Antone left Wednesday's game against the Tigers due to right elbow discomfort, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. After recently making his way back from the second Tommy John surgery of his career, Antone is reportedly once again having troubles with his elbow. The Reds will likely run some tests to determine if there is any structural damage in Antone's elbow, but given Antone's injury history, a trip to the injured list seems likely.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Exits with trainer

Antone was removed from Wednesday's game against Detroit with an apparent injury, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The Reds haven't specified what kind of injury Antone is currently dealing with, but more information should be available shortly. Antone recently returned from the injured list after working his way back from his second Tommy John surgery.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Serving as opener Monday

Antone will serve as the Reds' opening pitcher for Monday's game against Seattle, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Antone was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Friday after spending the start of the 2023 campaign continuing his recovery from Tommy John surgery. He allowed a hit and no walks while striking out one in a scoreless relief inning against the Cubs on Saturday. It's not yet clear who will serve as the Reds' bulk reliever Monday.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Reinstated from IL

The Reds reinstated Antone (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Friday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Antone has thrown only five pitches in the majors since June 2021, undergoing Tommy John surgery that August, but he'll return to the Reds' bullpen in time for their playoff push. The 29-year-old righty made 12 rehab appearances with Triple-A Louisville, putting up a 3.00 ERA and 1.42 WHIP across 12 innings with an 11:5 K:BB. He could potentially work his way into high-leverage situations down the line, but Cincinnati likely won't push him too hard given his lengthy absence.

  • Reds' Tejay Antone: Rehab extended

Antone (elbow) agreed Sunday to extend his rehab assignment an additional 10 days, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. After opening his rehab assignment July 25, Antone was nearing the end of his 30-day rehab window, but MLB rules will allow him to extend the assignment because he's working his way back from August 2021 Tommy John surgery. Antone was initially expected to be fully cleared for spring training, but those plans were thwarted when he suffered a right flexor strain while rehabbing over the winter. He appears to have steered clear of any further setbacks since he started throwing again in April, and he's turned in respectable results thus far during his rehab assignment. In seven appearances at Triple-A Louisville, Antone has given up four earned runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out seven over 7.1 innings.
