The Tigers optioned Brieske to Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday. He was in the mix for one of the final spots in the Tigers' bullpen, but the team ultimately went with Joey Wentz and Alex Faedo. Brieske has experience both as a starter and a reliever, and it's not clear which role the club has planned for him at Toledo.... See More ... See Less

Tigers' Beau Brieske: Working with new slider grip
Brieske has adjusted the grip on his slider over the offseason to give the pitch more spin, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Brieske said his previous slider acted more like a cutter at times, but he's adjusted his grip to hold the ball deeper in his hand and develop more spin. In his first spring appearance, the average spin rate of the pitch sat at 2,399 rpm, up 200 revolutions from last season, while the slider's speed was down a few ticks. He followed that performance with two more scoreless innings Saturday. Brieske had some success in a bullpen role last year, posting a 3.60 ERA across 35 innings, and he could take a step forward if his new slider is effective.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Covers two scoreless innings
Brieske tossed two scoreless innings of relief in Saturday's extra-inning win over the Angels. He didn't allow any hits or walks and struck out three. After Sawyer Gipson-Long pitched five effective innings to start the game, Brieske cruised through the seventh and eighth. The righty has worked almost exclusively as a reliever this year, with just one start in 22 appearances. Brieske has been fairly good in the role with a 3.99 ERA, and it's possible he rejoins the rotation mix in 2024 after making 15 starts last year for the Tigers.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Takes loss Wednesday
Brieske (1-3) allowed three runs on four hits across 1.2 innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Yankees. He walked three and had no strikeouts. Brieske was forced into action in the second inning after starter Matt Manning left early with what was later determined to be a fractured right foot. The former struggled, but it can be somewhat forgiven considering the tough circumstances. Brieske made 15 starts for the Tigers last season and could slot into the rotation with Manning out, though he's only made one start this season as he's shifted into more of a relief role. Joey Wentz, who's made 17 starts this year, will likely get the first opportunity. Wentz has a rough 6.65 ERA, however, so Brieske may at least be needed to cover some more innings out of the bullpen.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Takes first loss Monday
Brieske (0-1) allowed two runs on three hits across an inning of work to take the loss Monday against the Cubs. Brieske had been fairly sharp before Monday, as he entered the contest with a tidy 2.12 ERA over 17 innings of work. The righty had also only allowed one run this month, but the Cubs got to him in the ninth inning, pushing his ERA to 3.00 for the season. Brieske should stick in a high-leverage relief role for the Tigers despite the hiccup.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Records first career save
Brieske retired the final batter in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Rays via strikeout to record the save. Brieske came on for Alex Lange, who recorded the first two outs of the inning but also walked three batters and tossed 20 pitches. It's too early to say there's a change in the closer role for Detroit, as Lange leads the team with 17 saves and should have some job security. However, it seems that Brieske could be an option for the role if the Tigers decide to make a switch at some point.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Hurls two scoreless frames
Brieske did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing three hits over two scoreless innings against the Marlins while striking out two. Brieske allowed a leadoff single to Luis Arraez to open the bottom of the first but managed to retire the next three batters, two by way of strikeout. The right-hander would come back out to pitch a scoreless second inning before being relieved by Joey Wentz to open the third. Brieske has not allowed a run in four of his six appearances this month and has issued just one walk over that six-game stretch while notching seven strikeouts.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Set for opener duty
Brieske will serve as the opener for Saturday's game against the Marlins, Paige Leckie of MLB.com reports. Brieske debuted as a starter but has pitched exclusively in relief in the majors this season, maxing out at 20 pitches in an appearance. It's uncertain who will follow Brieske in Saturday's contest. The Tigers could make a roster move to add an arm like Joey Wentz, or they could go with more of a bullpen game instead of an opener-bulk reliever arrangement.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Returns from injured list
Brieske (elbow) was activated off the 60-day injured list Saturday. Brieske has been out all year due to elbow troubles but is ready to go after posting a 2.70 ERA across 11 rehab appearances. He pitched exclusively as a starter as a rookie last season, posting a 4.19 ERA in 15 starts, but he's now working as a reliever since the Tigers elected not to build him up to a starter's workload during his rehab assignment.... Tigers' Beau Brieske: Beginning rehab assignment
Brieske (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment Wednesday with High-A West Michigan, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Brieske has been on the injured list all season, so he will likely require a handful of starts in the minors before he's ready to make his season debut. The 25-year-old righty posted a 4.19 ERA and 1.20 WHIP through 81.2 innings across 15 starts last season.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Throws live batting practice
Brieske (elbow) threw a live batting practice session earlier this week, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Brieske came out of it well and is slated for another live BP on Saturday. He's been out all season following a nerve hydrodissection procedure on his right elbow in April but would seem to be nearing a rehab assignment.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Transferred to 60-day IL
The Tigers transferred Brieske (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list Tuesday. Seth Elledge, claimed off waivers from the Mets, will fill the vacant 40-man roster spot. Brieske resumed throwing last week but remains out indefinitely with lingering elbow trouble. He had a nerve hydrodissection procedure in April.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Resumes throwing program
Brieske (elbow) resumed throwing Monday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Briekse has already experiencing a couple of setbacks, but he's on the right track again and will begin building up toward mound work. The 25-year-old has been out all season due to upper-arm trouble that was eventually diagnosed as ulnar nerve entrapment.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: To resume throwing soon
Brieske (elbow) will resume a throwing program in one week, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Brieske recently had to be shut down due to a setback with his right elbow, but it evidently wasn't a major bump in the road. He's been out all season with a ulnar nerve entrapment, which required a hydrodissection procedure.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Shut down with elbow issue
Brieske (arm) halted his throwing progression Saturday after experiencing discomfort in his right elbow, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Brieske had recently advanced to throwing live batting practice, about four weeks after being shut down with what was eventually diagnosed as right ulnar nerve entrapment. Now there is again no timetable for when he might be ready to make his season debut for Detroit.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Throws live BP session
Brieske (arm) completed a live BP session at the Tigers' spring training facility in Lakeland on Tuesday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Brieske is scheduled to throw another live session later in the week. The right-hander was diagnosed with right ulnar nerve entrapment and underwent a hydrodissection procedure to treat the issue in his right arm. There's no timetable for when Brieske will be able to return to the mound at this point.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Throwing bullpen session
Brieske (arm) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. It will be the first time he's thrown from the mound since he underwent a hydrodissection procedure to treat a nerve issue in his right arm. There remains no timetable for Brieske's return, but Wednesday's activity would certainly represent a step forward.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Throwing off mound soon
Brieske (arm) is slated to throw a bullpen session by the middle of next week, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Brieske played catch Thursday for the first time since undergoing a hydrodissection procedure to treat a nerve issue in his right arm and will progress to mound work in a few days. There's no timetable yet for his return.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Still being evaluated
Brieske (arm) continues to receive further medical evaluation, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Brieske is on the injured list to begin the year with right upper arm discomfort, and there's still no word as to when the right-hander will be ready to return. Because of the missed time and the lack of clarity, it seems likely that he won't be ready to come off the injured list when first eligible.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Lands on 15-day injured list
Brieske was placed on the 15-day injured list by the Tigers on Thursday with right upper arm discomfort. Brieske felt discomfort after his final Grapefruit League outing. The team is still seeking a more specific diagnosis for the righty and should be able to provide a clearer timetable once that's available.... See More ... See Less
