  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Beginning rehab assignment Saturday

Sanchez (shoulder) will throw one inning or 25 pitches with Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. Sanchez has been on the injured list since June 2 with right shoulder inflammation. He has tossed multiple live sessions since landing on the IL, and while he isn't expected to return in 2024, the 26-year-old right-hander will at least get some reps on a rehab assignment before the season is over. In his 14 appearances prior to landing on the IL, Sanchez had a 0-3 record with a 6.06 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 17:14 K:BB across 35.2 innings.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Facing hitters again

Sanchez (shoulder) threw a 20-pitch live batting practice session last Friday, MLB.com reports. Sanchez has thrown multiple live sessions since landing on the injured list June 2 with right shoulder inflammation, but given his long history of shoulder-related problems, the Marlins don't seem to be preparing him for a return in 2024. The right-hander should at least continue his throwing progression over the final two weeks of the season, setting him up for a relatively normal offseason. Sanchez posted a 6.06 ERA and 1.60 WHIP over 35.2 innings across 14 appearances (seven starts) before being deactivated.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Tosses 15-pitch bullpen

Sanchez (shoulder) threw a 15-pitch bullpen session Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Sanchez has been throwing bullpens since the end of June but the Marlins have been taking it slowly with the 25-year-old as he recovers from right shoulder inflammation. Considering he's not anywhere near being stretched out to a starter's workload, the Marlins could plan to use Sanchez out of the bullpen once he's activated.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Building up through side sessions

The Marlins announced Monday that Sanchez (shoulder) continues to increase the intensity of his throwing during bullpen sessions, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Sanchez remains at the Marlins' spring training facility in Jupiter, Fla. as he completes his recovery from right shoulder inflammation, which forced him to the injured list June 2. He's been throwing bullpen sessions for more than a month now, but given Sanchez's long history of shoulder problems, the Marlins are understandably proceeding cautiously with him before clearing him to face hitters. Sanchez still has a chance to make it back from the IL before the end of August, but he may not have sufficient time to get ramped back up for a starting role.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Tosses another bullpen

Sanchez (shoulder) threw a 26-pitch bullpen session Saturday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Saturday's session was Sanchez's second time throwing off a mound, and he was able to get up to 26 pitches after only tossing 18 pitches in his first bullpen. Still, Sanchez won't be eligible for return until August.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Throws bullpen session

Sanchez (shoulder) threw an 18-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. He could throw off the mound again this weekend. While it appears he's inching in the right direction, Sanchez won't be eligible for activation until early August after being transferred to the 60-day injured list earlier this week. He's coming back from right shoulder inflammation.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Moved to 60-day IL

The Marlins transferred Sanchez (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday. The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Austin Kitchen, who was claimed off waivers. Sanchez had been hoping to be cleared to throw a bullpen session soon, but this move would seem to suggest that won't happen. The righty has been out since early June with right shoulder inflammation and now won't be eligible to return until the beginning of August at the earliest.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Could throw off mound soon

Sanchez (shoulder) has joined the Marlins in Kansas City and could be cleared to throw a bullpen session in a few days, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Sanchez began throwing on flat ground a week ago and might be ready to try things from the bump soon. The right-hander has been out for most of June with shoulder inflammation and will probably require a rehab assignment before being activated. Given the state of the Marlins' injury-riddled rotation, Sanchez will probably be needed to start some games once he's deemed ready.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Resumes throwing

The Marlins announced Tuesday that Sanchez (shoulder) is asymptomatic while throwing and rehabbing at the team's extended spring training facility in Jupiter, Fla., MLB.com reports. Sanchez was placed on the 15-day injured list June 2, with the Marlins deactivating him two days after he saw a significant dip in velocity in his May 31 start versus the Rangers. While it's encouraging that Sanchez didn't face an extended shutdown from throwing, the Marlins will likely proceed slowly with the right-hander, who has previously undergone two surgeries on his shoulder. The Marlins may not have a spot in the rotation available for Sanchez if Edward Cabrera (shoulder) and Ryan Weathers (finger) beat him back from the IL.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Out with shoulder inflammation

Sanchez was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with right shoulder inflammation, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The right-hander allowed two runs and threw just 53 pitches over four-plus innings Friday against the Rangers, and the injury may have played a role in the brevity of that outing. The severity of the injury is unclear, but Sanchez will be unavailable for at least the next couple weeks. The Marlins have three scheduled days off in the next nine days, so they won't immediately need to replace Sanchez in the rotation.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Goes five innings in loss

Sanchez (0-3) took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over five innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out two. Sanchez got off to a rough start, walking Corbin Carroll in the opening at-bat before surrendering back-to-back doubles with two outs in the frame, leading to two runs coming home for Arizona. The right-hander would allow another run on a sac fly in the second, but settled in nicely from that point on, giving up just two infield singles over his final three frames. It marked Sanchez's longest outing of the season, though he's now been tagged with the loss in each of his last two starts. He's also walked multiple batters in all four outings this month.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Extends to 81 pitches

Sanchez did not factor into the decision Monday against the Tigers, allowing three runs (zero earned) on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out two. An error opened the door for a three-run second that was entirely uncredited to Sanchez, who was generally effective throughout the rest of his outing. It was the 10th appearance and fourth start of the season for Sanchez, who allowed 10 earned runs over 10.2 innings during his previous three starts. Most encouraging for Sanchez is that he was able to work his way up to 81 pitches after tossing no more than 68 in any of his previous outings. He's tentatively scheduled to make his next start over the weekend at home when the Mets make the trek to Miami.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Tosses four innings

Sanchez allowed two runs on three hits and three walks over four innings in a no-decision Sunday. He struck out two during the win over Oakland. Sanchez threw four innings for the second straight outing and would've been in line for the victory if he went one more Sunday. He kept the A's scoreless through three frames before coughing up a pair of runs in the fourth. Sanchez lowered his ERA to 7.50 with a lackluster 11:7 K:BB through 18 frames. As of now, he's likely sliding back to the bullpen with Braxton Garrett (shoulder) and Jesus Luzardo (elbow) both expected to return soon.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Rough opening frame

Sanchez did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing five runs on seven hits over four innings against the Rockies. He struck out three. The Rockies jumped on Sanchez quickly Tuesday, scoring five times in the opening inning, with three coming on an Elehuris Montero home run. However, Sanchez would settle in and hold the Rockies scoreless over his subsequent three innings as the Marlins' opener, allowing just one additional hit. It's been a shaky start to the season overall for the 25-year-old right-hander -- Sanchez's ERA is up to 8.36 with a 1.71 WHIP and 9:4 K:BB across 11 innings.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Set to open Wednesday's game

Sanchez is scheduled to start Wednesday's game in Atlanta, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The 25-year-old right-hander will be making his first MLB start since Oct. 8, 2020, when he faced Atlanta in Game 3 of the National League Division Series. After missing most of the ensuing three seasons while recovering from shoulder problems, Sanchez has been healthy thus far in 2024 while operating in a relief role for Miami, producing a 6.14 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 7.1 innings. He hasn't recorded more than six outs in any of his seven appearances, so Sanchez shouldn't be expected to work more than two or three innings before turning the game over to the bullpen. If Miami doesn't add another pitcher to its active roster ahead of Wednesday's contest, Kyle Tyler -- who has yet to make his 2024 MLB debut but covered 3.1 innings in his last appearance for Triple-A Jacksonville on April 14 -- would appear to be the most logical option to work behind Sanchez in bulk relief.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Out of options

Sanchez is out of minor-league options, but the right-hander isn't guaranteed a spot on the Opening Day roster, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. He's thrown only one inning since 2020 due to a pair of shoulder surgeries, and the upside he displayed prior to that is a distant memory. The Marlins have a vacancy in their rotation this season with Sandy Alcantara (elbow) out, but Sanchez might be a long shot just to win a low-leverage relief job. He threw a bullpen session Thursday and at least appears to be healthy to begin camp, but the 25-year-old has a lot to prove. "That's the reality," manager Skip Schumaker said Thursday. "He's in big-league camp. He's got a chance just like anybody else, but he's gonna have to show something."

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Says he's 90-to-95 percent healthy

Sanchez (shoulder) told reporters Thursday that he's 90-to-95 percent healthy, Kevin Barral of Fish on First reports. Sanchez made one appearance with Double-A Pensacola last September in what was his first outing since 2020, but he had to be scratched from his next scheduled appearance because his surgically repaired shoulder didn't bounce back as hoped. It's good that he currently appears trending in the right direction, but at this point it seems unlikely Sanchez will healthy and effective for a sustained period.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Doesn't make scheduled appearance

Sanchez (shoulder) did not make a second appearance with Double-A Pensacola on Sunday as scheduled, MLB.com reports. Sanchez did throw a scoreless inning for Pensacola on Sept. 12 in what was his first appearance at any level since 2020. Evidently, he must not have recovered from that outing as hoped, so his next appearance was scratched. Sanchez is slated to throw a bullpen session soon, so there's a slim chance he'll make it back to game action again before the end of the minor-league season.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Making 2023 debut

Sanchez (shoulder) will be reinstated from Triple-A Jacksonville's 60-day injured list and will be assigned to Double-A Pensacola on Tuesday, when he's expected to throw one inning or 20 pitches in a game, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Sanchez hasn't pitched at any level since 2020, but he's finally ready to get back up on the bump following a prolonged recovery from shoulder surgery and related setbacks. He'll look to string together some quality appearances in the minors to close out the season before potentially competing for a spot on the Marlins' big-league pitching staff next spring.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Tosses bullpen session

Sanchez (shoulder) completed a 19-pitch bullpen session Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. While the side session represents a step forward after Sanchez had been limited to playing catch off flat ground heading into the All-Star break, the 24-year-old right-hander still doesn't appear especially close to pitching in a game. Sanchez has endured a slow buildup since undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery in October, which came after he had surgery in July 2021 to repair a capsule tear in the same shoulder. He'll likely continue to throw side sessions for a few more weeks before he advances to facing hitters in live batting practice or simulated games.
