Player Outlook
Dakota Hudson appeared poised to be a key rotation piece for years to come in St. Louis after he posted a 3.17 ERA in 67 outings from 2018-2020, but he missed most of 2021 while recovering from Tommy John surgery and struggled to a 4.64 ERA the past two seasons. He was non-tendered by the Cardinals in November before latching on with the Rockies, which should ensure a starting role for 2024. It's obviously not a favorable landing spot given the Coors Field factor, which will likely make him a volatile fantasy option even with a relatively solid performance.

  • Rockies' Dakota Hudson: Competing for rotation spot

Hudson is competing for a rotation spot with Ryan Feltner, Peter Lambert, Ty Blach and Noah Davis this spring, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. The Rockies signed Hudson to a one-year, $1.5 million contract this offseason. He's worked primarily as a starter throughout his career, though did pitch out of the bullpen with the Cardinals to close the 2023 campaign. Hudson has struggled significantly the last two seasons, posting a 1.45 and 1.50 WHIP, respectively. He made his spring debut Thursday and allowed a hit and two walks across a scoreless inning.

  • Rockies' Dakota Hudson: Signs with Rox

Hudson signed a one-year contract with the Rockies on Friday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Hudson was non-tendered by the Cardinals earlier in the offseason after putting up a 4.64 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with a 123:95 K:BB across the past two seasons. Signing with the Rockies should ensure Hudson remains part of a major-league rotation, but having to pitch his home games at Coors Field likely won't help his subpar statline.

  • Dakota Hudson: Dumped by St. Louis

Hudson became a free agent Friday after being non-tendered by the Cardinals. Hudson posted a 3.14 ERA over his first 249.2 major-league innings between 2018-21, but he's struggled to a 4.64 ERA in 221 innings since the beginning of the 2022 campaign while continuing to show diminishing fastball velocity. The 29-year-old right-hander had been projected to make about $3.7 million in 2024 via salary arbitration.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Allows three runs in loss

Hudson (6-3) gave up three runs on seven hits and three walks across five innings in Thursday's 3-0 loss to the Brewers. He struck out three. Hudson once again had trouble keeping traffic off the basepaths, allowing two of his runs on singles to William Contreras and Christian Yelich. His struggles with the free pass continued, as the right-hander has now allowed three walks in four of his last five games. He finishes the season with a 4.98 ERA and 1.50 WHIP across 81.1 innings, with 45 strikeouts.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Avoids disaster Friday

Hudson allowed two runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out two over six innings in a no-decision versus the Padres. Hudson threw 52 of 84 pitches for strikes and uncorked two wild pitches, but he avoided significant damage despite the heavy traffic he put on the bases. He's posted quality starts in two of his five outings in September and has given up just two home runs over 27.1 innings on the month. For the season, Hudson has a 4.95 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 42:31 K:BB through 76.1 innings over 17 appearances (11 starts). He's lined up for a road outing in Milwaukee next week to wrap up his season.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Modest effort in no-decision

Hudson allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three over five innings Sunday against the Phillies. He did not factor into the decision. Hudson allowed just one hit through the first three innings, but the Phillies finally got to him with three runs in the fourth. Shockingly enough, Hudson's three strikeouts were his most in a start since he had seven Aug. 20. He had just five strikeouts in his previous four starts and has only managed to reach six innings once in his last six starts. The 28-year-old is up to a 5.12 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 40:30 K:BB in 70.1 innings. He's projected to face the Padres on the road in his next outing.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Earns win despite rough finish

Hudson (6-1) earned the win over Atlanta on Wednesday, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two batters over five innings. Hudson was staked to an early 6-0 lead before yielding two runs in the fourth inning. He was still ahead 7-2 entering the sixth but couldn't record an out in that frame, allowing four straight baserunners -- three of whom crossed the plate -- before his departure. Hudson nonetheless collected the win, his fifth over his past seven outings. He's settled into a spot in the Cardinals' rotation and should remain there for the rest of the campaign, as he's posted a passable 4.54 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 41.2 innings across seven starts since the beginning of August.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Takes first loss

Hudson (5-1) allowed five runs on six hits and five walks while striking out one batter over 5.2 innings in a loss to Philadelphia on Saturday. Hudson came into the contest having won each of his previous four starts, but he couldn't continue that streak against the Phillies. The right-hander made it through two scoreless frames, but Philadelphia tagged him for at least one run in each of the remaining innings in which he pitched. The five total runs Hudson allowed tied a campaign-high mark, and Saturday was the first time he's issued more than three walks in an outing this season. Despite a 5-1 record, Hudson's 4.41 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 33:19 K:BB over 49 innings make him far from a reliable fantasy asset.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Remains undefeated Sunday

Hudson (5-0) got the win Sunday over the Mets after allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over 5.1 innings. Hudson surrendered a run in the third and then was punished by a Pete Alonso long ball in the fourth to put the Mets up 2-1. He wound up departing the game in line for the win after the Cardinals went up 3-2 in the fifth. Hudson tied a season-high with seven strikeouts and it was his fourth consecutive start allowing three or fewer earned runs. The one knock on Hudson is he's allowed at least one home run in each of his last four starts but has otherwise been the Cardinals' most consistent pitcher. He now owns a 3.95 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 32:14 K:BB in 43.1 innings (five starts) and will look to pick up his fifth consecutive win in a weekend road matchup with the Phillies.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Keeps rolling Tuesday

Hudson (4-0) allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three over 6.2 innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Athletics. Hudson has won all three of his starts since moving into the rotation, posting a 3.86 ERA and 12:5 K:BB over 18.2 innings in that span. While far from dominant, he's provided stable innings for a Cardinals rotation that has struggled with consistency all year. The right-hander is now at a 4.03 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 25:12 K:BB through 38 innings over 10 appearances (four starts) this season. Hudson is tentatively projected for a home start against the Mets over the weekend.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Grabs third win

Hudson (3-0) earned the win Wednesday, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings against the Rays. He struck out two. Hudson's now 2-0 in two starts since rejoining St. Louis' rotation while allowing six runs over 12 innings. Overall, the 28-year-old Hudson sports a 4.31 ERA with a 1.40 WHIP and 22:11 K:BB across 31.1 innings this season. He's lined up for a home matchup with thhe A's in his next outing.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Gets another start Wednesday

Hudson is scheduled to make his next start with the Cardinals on Wednesday at Tampa Bay. St. Louis added Hudson and Matthew Liberatore to the rotation last week after the team dealt away Jack Flaherty and Jordan Montgomery ahead of the trade deadline. Both pitchers will make their next starts in Tampa Bay, but of the two, Hudson is coming off the more encouraging outing. He picked up his second win of the season this past Wednesday versus Minnesota, covering seven innings while striking out seven and allowing three runs on two hits and three walks.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Takes win after joining rotation

Hudson (2-0) earned the win over Minnesota on Wednesday, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks while striking out seven batters over seven innings. Hudson has spent most of the season in a long-relief role, but he was moved into the rotation after St. Louis traded starters Jordan Montgomery and Jack Flaherty. Hudson excelled Wednesday, getting through six scoreless frames before Matt Wallner tagged him for a three-run homer in the seventh. The right-handed hurler still managed to complete that inning and finished with a quality start and a victory. Hudson was a starter all of last season, posting a 4.45 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and poor 78:61 K:BB over 139.2 frames while compiling an 8-7 record.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Moves into rotation

Hudson will start Wednesday's game against the Twins at Busch Stadium. Hudson and Matthew Liberatore will slot into the rotation this week after St. Louis sent out starters Jordan Montgomery and Jack Flaherty to the Rangers and Orioles, respectively, prior to Tuesday's trade deadline. Though all but one of his seven appearances with the Cardinals this season have come in a bullpen role, Hudson should be able to provide a decent amount of length in his return to the rotation Wednesday after he covered 4.1 innings and tossed 93 pitches in relief in his most recent appearance last Thursday against the Cubs. Hudson holds a 4.19 ERA and 1.60 WHIP over 19.1 innings in the big leagues on the season.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Covers bulk innings Thursday

Hudson allowed five runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings in Thursday's 10-3 loss to the Cubs. He did not factor in the decision. Starter Miles Mikolas was ejected for throwing at Ian Happ after the Chicago outfielder caught Willson Contreras (head) with a backswing earlier in the at-bat. Hudson was able to mop up some innings in the blowout loss and tossed a season-high 107 pitches, getting him fully stretched out in case he's needed as a starter again. The right-hander currently isn't part of the Cardinals' rotation, but he could be the next man up if pitchers like Jordan Montgomery and/or Jack Flaherty are dealt ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline. Hudson has a 4.19 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 13:7 K:BB through 19.1 innings over seven appearances (one start) this season.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Draws start for bullpen game

Hudson will start Wednesday's game against the Marlins, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Hudson has appeared in four games for the Cardinals this season, putting up a strong 1.80 ERA and 1.20 WHIP through 10 innings. Most recently, he pitched 3.1 scoreless frames and picked up the win Saturday against the Nationals, so he'll be taking the hill Wednesday on three days' rest. The 28-year-old righty will likely stay in the game for two or three innings before being relieved.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Moves up to big club

The Cardinals recalled Hudson from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday. Hudson was sent back to Memphis a day after serving as the Cardinals' 27th man in last Saturday's doubleheader with the Yankees, but he'll be back with the big club less than a week later after starter Adam Wainwright (shoulder) was moved to the injured list Tuesday. Steven Matz is set to move into the rotation Wednesday against the Marlins, so Hudson looks as though he'll have to settle for a long-relief role while he's up with the Cardinals, likely through the All-Star break.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Returns to Triple-A

Hudson was returned to Triple-A Memphis after serving as the 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader versus the Yankees. Hudson pitched 2.2 scoreless innings in the Cardinals' 6-2 loss in Game 2 of the twin bill, allowing a hit and striking out two in relief of Matthew Liberatore. After the brief stint in the majors, Hudson will return to Memphis' rotation, where he has a lackluster 6.00 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 39:17 K:BB over 48 innings across 11 starts.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Up as 27th man for twin bill

Hudson was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to serve as the 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader versus the Yankees. Hudson has endured some mixed results over seven outings since returning from a neck injury, posting a 6.37 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 26:12 K:BB for Memphis in that span. The right-hander will likely work out of the bullpen Saturday, as Jack Flaherty and Matthew Liberatore are set to start the two games.

  • Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Optioned to build up velocity

Cardinals manager Oli Marmol told reporters that Hudson was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday in part to help build back his velocity, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Marmol notes that Hudson has been working at 89-90 mph, and that isn't going to work at the highest level. "We believe there's a path forward, but the big leagues isn't the level to build that [velocity] up," Marmol said. Hudson has a good chance to make starts for the Cardinals in 2023, but he can safely be avoided in redraft formats at this point and profiles as more of a streaming option once with St. Louis.
