Narvaez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game in San Francisco, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. The left-handed-hitting Narvaez started behind the plate Tuesday, but with southpaw Blake Snell on the hill for the Giants on Wednesday, the Mets will hand Narvaez the day off. Tomas Nido will handle the catching for the Mets.... See More ... See Less

Mets' Omar Narvaez: Could be set for more work
Narvaez went 0-for-4 after replacing Francisco Alvarez (thumb) in the second inning of Friday's win over the Dodgers. Alvarez was headed for an MRI after the game, but per Tim Healey of Newsday, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza is "pretty concerned" about the severity of the injury. As the only other catcher on the 40-man roster, Narvaez figures to see a big spike in his playing time should Alvarez land on the IL, but that may not result in much additional fantasy value -- since 2022, the 32-year-old sports a .208/.288/.300 slash line in 467 plate appearances with only six homers. Tomas Nido, who was in camp this spring as a non-roster invitee, is batting .345 (10-for-29) for Triple-A Syracuse and would likely be promoted to take Alvarez's spot, but his career numbers in the majors aren't any better than Narvaez's performance the last few years.... Mets' Omar Narvaez: Set to back up Alvarez
Narvaez will open the season as the Mets' No. 2 catcher behind Francisco Alvarez. This was the expected role for Narvaez after he played 49 games in 2023 during his first season with New York, slashing a weak .211/.283/.297 with only two homers and seven RBI. The 32-year-old's days as a fantasy asset are behind him, and even if Alvarez were to get hurt, Narvaez would likely split work behind the plate with Tomas Nido, who will begin the season with Triple-A Syracuse.... Mets' Omar Narvaez: Exercises player option
Narvaez exercised his $7 million player option for 2024 on Thursday. As expected, the 31-year-old will return next season as the backup to young Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez. Narvaez slashed just .211/.283/.297 over 49 games (146 plate appearances) in 2023, but he is a good defender behind the plate and had the player option in hand.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Omar Narvaez: Gets starting nod in series opener
Narvaez will start at catcher and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Rangers, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Narvaez will pick up his second start in three games while No. 1 backstop Francisco Alvarez rests. The Mets have suggested that the 22-year-old Alvarez could have his catching workload managed down the stretch, so Narvaez could end up moving into more a timeshare behind the plate in September rather than serving as a clear No. 2 option. Narvaez is slashing .205/.294/.341 with one home run, three RBI and four runs in 16 games since the All-Star break.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Omar Narvaez: Launches first homer
Narvaez went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Thursday's 6-2 loss to the White Sox. Narvaez got the Mets on the board in the fifth inning with a solo homer off Michael Kopech, his first of the year, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Narvaez had been struggling at the plate while shifting to a backup role behind Francisco Alvarez -- he'd gone just 1-for-19 over his previous 11 games. Overall, the 31-year-old Narvaez is slashing just .209/.294/.279 with six runs scored and four RBI through 51 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Omar Narvaez: Returns from injured list
The Mets reinstated Narvaez (calf) from the 60-day injured list Monday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Narvaez is finally ready to roll after missing the past two months with a severe calf strain. Francisco Alvarez has seized the Mets' starting catcher job, but Narvaez should still play at least a couple times per week when Alvarez is serving as a designated hitter or receiving a day off.... Mets' Omar Narvaez: Shifting rehab to Triple-A
Mets manager Buck Showalter said Narvaez (calf) will move his rehab assignment from High-A Brooklyn to Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Showalter added that Narvaez is on pace to return from the 60-day injured list at the beginning of next week, when the backstop is first eligible for activation. Narvaez opened the season as the Mets' No. 1 catcher but played in just five games before suffering a left calf strain. He's since gotten two rehab games under his belt and will make a few more appearances for Syracuse this week, but Narvaez may have to settle for the No. 2 role once he's activated with Francisco Alvarez having provided the Mets with a major spark on offense since he was called up from Triple-A.... Mets' Omar Narvaez: To begin rehab games Thursday
Narvaez (calf) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment Thursday with High-A Brooklyn, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Narvaez will probably remain at Brooklyn through the weekend before advancing to Triple-A Syracuse. He needs a lot of rehab at-bats because he's been out since early April due to a severe calf strain, but the 31-year-old catcher is pushing for a return to the Mets around early-to-mid June. It'll be a complicated situation in Queens if Francisco Alvarez, Gary Sanchez and Tomas Nido are all healthy and performing well at that juncture.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Omar Narvaez: Assignment coming next week
Narvaez (calf) will begin a rehab assignment next week, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Narvaez has been sidelined with a strained left calf since early April but is now nearing the point where he can return to game action. It's unclear how long the Mets plan on keeping him on assignment, but we'll likely know more as he recovers.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Omar Narvaez: Moved to 60-day IL
Narvaez (calf) was transferred Thursday from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. Narvaez still has at least five more weeks of rest and rehab for the medium-to-high grade calf strain that he suffered in early April. Francisco Alvarez has taken over as the Mets' primary catcher with Tomas Nido backing him up.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Omar Narvaez: Placed on 10-day IL
Narvaez was placed on the 10-day injured list by the Mets on Friday, retroactive to April 6, with a left calf strain. Narvaez has been diagnosed with a medium-to-high grade strain and is expected to be sidelined 8-9 weeks, putting him on the shelf until at least June. Francisco Alvarez has been summoned to fill his roster spot and will share time at catcher with Tomas Nido.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Omar Narvaez: Dealing with severe calf strain
Narvaez was diagnosed with a medium-to-high grade strain of his left calf Thursday and is expected to be sidelined 8-to-9 weeks. Narvaez suffered the injury during Wednesday's game against the Brewers and will officially be placed on the injured list ahead of the Mets' home opener Friday versus the Marlins. Francisco Alvarez is already on his way to New York and figures to share time at catcher with Tomas Nido while also drawing starts at DH. If the estimated timeline proves to be accurate, Narvaez won't be an option again before mid-June.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Omar Narvaez: Could be headed to IL
Narvaez (calf) could be headed to the 10-day injured list after leaving Wednesday's loss to Milwaukee, Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports. Narvaez was sent for imaging scans after making an early exit from Wednesday's contest due to discomfort in his left calf. Martino notes that top prospect Francisco Alvarez has already been summoned to New York and could be active at catcher for the Mets' rescheduled home opener Friday versus the Marlins. Alvarez would probably share time behind the plate with Tomas Nido while also working into the DH mix.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Omar Narvaez: Exits game with calf injury
Narvaez was removed late in Wednesday's 7-6 loss to Milwaukee with a left calf injury, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. He went 1-for-4 with a base hit prior to departing the game. Narvaez felt something in the calf during his last plate appearance and was taken out in the final frame. He'll be examined but is being referred to as day-to-day for now. If Narvaez winds up having to miss some time, it could clear the way for a Francisco Alvarez promotion.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Omar Narvaez: Out of lineup Tuesday
Narvaez is not in the Mets' starting lineup Tuesday. Tomas Nido will get a turn at catcher and bat ninth against the Brewers and left-hander Wade Miley. This looks to be a routine day of rest for Narvaez.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Omar Narvaez: On bench versus lefty
Narvaez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Narvaez is 3-for-7 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored, but he'll take a seat Sunday with lefty Trevor Rogers on the mound for Miami. Tomas Nido will work behind the plate in the series finale, batting eighth.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Omar Narvaez: Sitting Friday
Narvaez is not listed in the Mets' lineup Friday against Miami, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. After going 1-for-3 with a walk in Thursday's season opener, Narvaez will sit Friday against lefty Jesus Luzardo. In his place, Tomas Nido will start behind the dish and bat ninth.... See More ... Mets' Omar Narvaez: Smacks first spring homer
Narvaez went 2-for-3 with a walk, a solo home run and a second run scored in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays. The sixth-inning shot off Kyle Crick was the catcher's first homer of the spring. Narvaez will split time behind the plate with Tomas Nido this season -- at least until top prospect Francisco Alvarez is deemed ready. After a slow start to his spring prior to leaving for the WBC, Narvaez is now batting .300 (6-for-20).... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Omar Narvaez: Quiet at plate this spring
Narvaez went 1-for-3 in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals. The hit was just his second of the spring for the Mets in 15 at-bats, with both of them being singles. Narvaez also went 1-for-4 in his only start for Venezuela during the WBC. The 31-year-old catcher signed a one-year deal this offseason to be the Mets' No. 1 catcher to begin the year largely on the strength of his defense and pitch-framing, and he could work in a platoon with Tomas Nido. The team will be hoping Francisco Alvarez plays well enough at Triple-A Syracuse to push Narvaez aside at some point in 2023, however.... See More ... See Less
