Astros' Miguel Diaz: Back with Houston on minors deal
Diaz signed a minor-league contract with the Astros on Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Diaz elected free agency Thursday after being DFA'd by Houston on Monday, and he will now return to the Astros organization after exploring his options on the open market. The 29-year-old righty will report to Triple-A Sugar Land, after posting a 5.05 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 2023 at that level as part of the Tigers' farm system.

Diaz has elected to become a free agent Thursday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Diaz cleared waivers after being removed from the Astros' 40-man roster, but he's exercised his right to free agency rather than accept an outright assignment. The 29-year-old reliever holds a career 4.81 ERA and 132:64 K:BB over 127.1 innings covering parts of seven big-league seasons.

The Astros designated Diaz for assignment Monday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
The move corresponds with the Astros selecting the contract of right-hander Blair Henley from Triple-A Sugar Land. Diaz was claimed by the Astros on April 4 after being DFA'd by the Tigers on March 28 following a poor spring training. He appeared in one game for Houston this season, pitching one scoreless inning April 5 against the Rangers. Diaz will be available on waivers for an organization in need of bullpen depth.

Diaz was rarely used in the majors during his time with the Tigers over the past two seasons, but he was successful in a small sample size with a 1.02 ERA and 0.91 WHIP across 17.2 total innings. Diaz turned in some excellent ratios (0.64 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, 16:5 K:BB) over a small sample of 14 innings with the Tigers in 2023, but he wasn't able to maintain anywhere close to that level of success in the spring. He finished Grapefruit League play with a 5:40 ERA and 10:5 K:BB in 8.1 innings, and those results weren't good enough for Diaz to secure a spot in what shapes up to be a stronger Detroit bullpen in 2024.

Diaz has been told he will not make the Tigers' Opening Day roster and is likely to be designated for assignment, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

For the second time in three days, Diaz will open a game for the Tigers. After tossing a scoreless inning Sunday against the Angels before giving way to Joey Wentz, Diaz will most likely cover an inning or two Tuesday before giving way to Alex Faedo, who is available on five days' rest.
