  • Rangers' Alexander Wennberg: Joining Blueshirts

Wennberg was traded to the Rangers by the Kraken on Wednesday in exchange for a second- and fourth-round pick in 2024 and 2025, respectively, Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports. Wennberg hasn't exactly been tearing it up lately with just one goal and a mere 16 shots in his last 13 outings, though he did chip in with five helpers over that stretch. Still, the 29-year-old center figures to challenge for a spot on the Rangers' No. 2 power-play unit while also moving into the third-line center role. Despite the recent slump, Wennberg should be capable of getting over the 30-point threshold for the third straight year.

He is eligible for unrestricted free agency in the summer and carries a $4.5 million cap hit.

  • Kraken's Alexander Wennberg: One of each in narrow win

Wennberg scored a power-play goal on three shots and added an assist in Thursday's 2-0 win over the Penguins. Wennberg's contributions helped Philipp Grubauer walk away with his first shutout of the campaign. This was Wennberg's first multi-point effort in 2023-24 -- his last was in the second round of the playoffs versus the Stars last spring. The center posted a meager one goal and four assists over nine outings in February. Wennberg is at 25 points, 79 shots on net, 64 blocked shots and a plus-2 rating through 59 appearances. Despite his lack of offense, he could be a trade target over the next week for his solid two-way play.

Wennberg was credited with a goal without taking a shot in Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Blackhawks. Wennberg scored his first goal of the season in Wednesday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Oilers. Wennberg is up to five points in 17 games to begin the year, not surprising for a player who hasn't reached even 40 points in a season since 2016-17.
