The Texans and Schultz agreed to terms on a three-year, $36 million contract extension on Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Schultz will stick around with C.J. Stroud for the foreseeable future on a new deal that includes $23.5 million in guarantees, per Rapoport. Had he not been re-signed Schultz would've arguably been the top tight end of this free agency cycle, and keeping the pass-catching corps that Stroud found success with as a rookie intact makes complete sense for Houston. Across 15 regular-season games in 2023, Schultz secured 59 of 88 targets for 635 yards and five scores.

Schultz finished second on the team in targets and delivered a few big plays, most notably a 21-yard catch late in the first quarter to set up a field goal. Earlier in the same drive, he dropped a pass -- his second in as many games this postseason. Despite some inconsistency on a game-to-game basis, Schultz remains a steady contributor overall, as he has topped 55 receptions in four consecutive seasons while reaching 600 receiving yards in three of those four campaigns. Schultz maintained his target share in Week 8, the total pass volume just fell off. That won't be the case in Week 9 because the Texans have no reason to believe they can run the ball against Tampa Bay. He's seen 42% of C.J. Stroud's targets to the end zone and has 22 targets in his last three games.
It's a little tricky to trust Schultz with Dell back, but the hope is that the combination of Schultz's matchup and the trust he's gained with Stroud will lead to modest numbers including, hopefully, a touchdown. It also helps that the Texans have struggled to run the ball, so extra chances to pick up short targets could make a difference. I would start Kincaid over Schultz in half- and full-PPR, but not non-PPR. I would also start Schultz over Jonnu Smith and definitely over Taysom Hill.
