Player Outlook
Tarik Skubal underwent left flexor tendon surgery in August of 2022 and his rehab extended through the first three months of last season. He was on a limited pitch count initially upon his return and there were some bumps in the road early, but Skubal eventually rounded into form, going 4-1 with a 1.25 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 52:6 K:BB in his final six starts (36 innings). A ninth-round pick in 2018, Skubal changed up his formula last season, dialing back his slider usage significantly for more four-seam fastballs and changeups. The changeup proved to be a big swing-and-miss pitch for him (50.6 Whiff% per Statcast) -- he still threw his slider, but the changeup became his primary secondary pitch behind the four-seamer. In total, the southpaw pitched just 95 innings last season, but if healthy, he should approach his career high of 149.1 innings set in 2021. Entering his age-27 season, Skubal will face an uphill battle every time he takes the ball for Detroit, but his skills are enticing.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Dazzles in Opening Day win

Skubal (1-0) tossed six scoreless innings to earn the win Thursday against the White Sox. He allowed three hits and struck out six. Skubal left after tossing 83 pitches, and if it wasn't his first start of the season, he may have been allowed to go longer as he was dominant while in the contest. The southpaw compiled a 2.80 ERA and 0.90 WHIP across 15 outings last year, which got off to a delayed start due to left flexor tendon surgery in August of 2022. If Skubal can stay healthy and log a full workload in 2024, he could be in line for a true breakout campaign as Detroit's ace.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Strikes out five in spring start

Skubal allowed three runs on eight hits across four innings of work in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Pirates. He walked one and struck out five. Skubal skipped his last spring start, with him tossing a simulated game instead, but he got back into his normal routine Saturday. The lefty wasn't at his sharpest, though he's still had a strong spring with a 3.00 ERA over three appearances, and he's already been announced as Detroit's Opening Day starter. Skubal had a delayed start to 2023 as he recovered from an injury, and he ultimately posted a stellar 2.80 ERA and 0.90 WHIP across 80.1 innings. The lefty could be ready for a bigger breakout in 2024, as he's poised to take on a larger workload.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Throws simulated game Sunday

Skubal skipped a potential Grapefruit League matchup against the Mets on Sunday and instead tossed 60 pitches in a simulated game, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. This was done for strategic reasons rather than any type of injury, as Detroit will face the Mets in the second series of the regular season and the team didn't want their opponent to get a look at Skubal. The talented lefty has already been named Detroit's Opening Day starter, and he should be poised for a big year if he can stay healthy.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Tapped for Opening Day start

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch announced Friday that Skubal will start Opening Day against the White Sox, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Skubal seemed to be an obvious choice after he logged a 2.80 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 102 strikeouts in 80.1 innings across 15 starts for the Tigers last season following a return from flexor tendon surgery. The left-hander probably isn't going to be a workhorse but nonetheless possesses ample fantasy upside for the 2024 season.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Effective in spring debut

Skubal tossed two scoreless innings in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Pirates. He walked one and struck out two. Skubal cruised in his first tune-up start of the spring, as he logged 29 pitches and didn't allow a hit. The talented lefty underwent flexor tendon surgery in August of 2022, which delayed his debut last year by a few months. That means the team will likely build him up slowly in camp with the goal of having him available for a larger regular-season workload. Skubal's career high in innings is 149.1, which he recorded back in 2021.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Hits 100 mph in live BP

Skubal touched 100 mph on his last pitch of live batting practice Tuesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Skubal averaged 95.8 mph with his four-seamer last season in his first year back from elbow surgery after averaging 94.1 mph with his four-seamer in 2022 before the operation. While reading too much into the velocity of one pitch in live BP isn't advisable, it certainly seems like an encouraging sign for the lefty's ability to hold or perhaps even improve upon his velocity gains in 2024.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Avoids arbitration

Skubal and the Tigers agreed to a one-year, $2.65 million deal Thursday to avoid arbitration, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. This is obviously a massive value for Detroit, as Skubal pitched like a frontline starter after returning from injury last season. The 27-year-old lefty logged a 2.80 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 102 strikeouts in 80.1 innings across 15 starts.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Ends season on high note

Skubal struck out eight over four scoreless innings but didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 8-0 win over the Royals. He gave up two hits and no walks in the 52-pitch start. Because the game was suspended after four innings Wednesday due to rain, Skubal's final start of 2023 was cut short, and his statistics weren't made official until the two teams completed the game Thursday. Given the abbreviated start, Skubal could be available in relief if needed Saturday or Sunday versus the Guardians, though the Tigers will presumably stay away from him for the final two games of the season if they can help it. After a spate of rocky outings upon his return from flexor tendon surgery in early July, Skubal was the Tigers' most dominant pitcher over the final two months of the season. Over his last 10 outings, Skubal went 6-2 with a 2.15 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 75:11 K:BB across 58.2 innings.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Continues dominant stretch

Skubal (7-3) earned the win over Oakland on Thursday, allowing two hits and issuing one walk while striking out 10 batters over seven scoreless innings. Skubal was masterful in the outing, giving up just two hits, both of which were infield singles that were subsequently wiped out by a double play. The southpaw also racked up 14 whiffs en route to a season-best 10 punchouts. Skubal has been a revelation in four September starts, posting a minuscule 1.04 ERA and 0.62 WHIP along with a 35:4 K:BB over 26 innings. His strong finish to the campaign should make him an intriguing commodity in fantasy drafts next season.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Dominant against Angels

Skubal (6-3) allowed one run on three hits over seven innings Friday, striking out nine and picking up a win over the Angels. Skubal was nearly untouchable Friday. He allowed just two singles through six shutout frames before David Fletcher tagged him with a solo shot in the seventh inning. Skubal has given up just three runs while compiling a 25:3 K:BB over his last three starts. He's also forced 53 swinging strikes during that span. Skubal will carry a 3.25 ERA into his next outing, which is currently lined up to be in Oakland.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Lights-out in win Saturday

Skubal (5-3) tossed five scoreless innings to earn the win Saturday against the White Sox. He allowed two hits and a walk while striking out nine. Inefficiency is the only knock on Skubal's performance, as he needed 95 pitches to cover his five innings. It was an excellent start all the same. Skubal has posted a stellar 2.00 ERA over his last three starts, tallying 25 strikeouts in only 18 innings while lowering his season ERA to 3.47. He'll look to continue his good run in his next scheduled start, which is slated for Friday against the Angels.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Sharp in win Sunday

Skubal (4-3) allowed two runs on five hits across seven innings to earn the win Sunday against the White Sox. He had two walks and struck out seven. Skubal tallied his second straight start allowing only two earned runs, and he's also struck out 16 batters over 13 innings in that time. That's allowed the lefty to lower his season ERA to a solid 3.77, and he's recorded 66 strikeouts across 57.1 innings overall. Injuries have been an issue for Skubal the past two years, but he's looked good when healthy. He'll look to build on this performance in his next scheduled start, which is penciled in for Saturday against the White Sox again.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Tough loss in strong start

Skubal (3-3) took the loss Tuesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks over six innings in a 4-2 loss against the Yankees. He struck out nine. The talented southpaw gave up solo home runs to Gleyber Torres in the first inning and Kyle Higashioka in the fifth inning, not allowing any hits in the interim. Skubal's third run was unearned due to a passed ball in the sixth and he was tagged with the unfortunate loss as Detroit's offense failed to provide any run support. After maxing out at 5.1 innings in his first seven starts, the 26-year-old has gone exactly six innings in each of his last three outings, compiling a 3.50 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and a dazzling 23:4 K:BB across those 18 innings. Skubal's next start is tentatively scheduled to occur on the road against a fledgling White Sox offense over the weekend.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Settles for no-decision Wednesday

Skubal allowed four runs on six hits across six innings and did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Cubs. He walked one and struck out seven. Skubal pitched decently against a hot Chicago lineup, but it wasn't enough for his fourth win of the season. The lefty did manage to complete six innings for the second straight start after not going six frames in any of his previous seven appearances. Skubal will look for win No. 4 the next time he takes the hill, which is currently scheduled for Tuesday against the struggling Yankees.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Fans seven in third win

Skubal (3-2) picked up the win in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Guardians, allowing one run on three hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out seven. The southpaw delivered his first quality start in eight outings this season, generating 33 called or swinging strikes on only 88 pitches in a dominant performance. Skubal is now consistently tossing around 90 pitches after having his workload capped in July following his return from flexor tendon surgery, and he's posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB through 16.2 innings over three August trips to the mound. His next start lines up for a home tilt next week against the Cubs.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Start postponed to Friday

Skubal's next start has been pushed to Friday after Thursday's series opener in Cleveland was postponed due to rain, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Skubal will handle one half of Friday's makeup doubleheader and Matt Manning will take the mound for the Tigers in the other one. Skubal, 26, has registered a 4.18 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 36:6 K:BB across 32.1 innings (seven starts) since he returned July 4 from flexor tendon surgery.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Tagged with five runs

Skubal (2-2) allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks over 5.1 innings Friday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Red Sox. Skubal gave up one run through three innings before serving up a three-run shot to Triston Casas in the fourth. It was the first homer allowed by Skubal this season. He's allowed 15 earned runs through seven starts, and he's turned in four scoreless appearances already. Skubal will carry a 4.18 ERA into his next outing, which is projected to be in Cleveland next week.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Strikes out six in win

Skubal (2-1) earned the win Saturday, allowing one run on six hits and one walk over 5.1 innings against the Rays. He struck out six. Skubal did a good job of pitching his way out of multiple jams throughout the contest, outside of the second inning, when he allowed one run to come across on a Manuel Margot single. The 26-year-old lefty would then hold the Rays scoreless over the next 3.1 innings before being relieved by Jose Cisnero. Skubal has now given up one run or fewer in four of his six starts, while the 5.1 innings marked his longest outing since he made his season debut in early July. He holds a very healthy 33:4 K:BB through 27 innings on the campaign.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Uneven performance Sunday

Skubal allowed four runs on six hits across 4.2 innings and did not factor into the decision in Sunday's game against the Marlins. He had no walks and struck out four. One game after logging five scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season, Skubal was less dominant Sunday, and he failed to complete five innings for the fourth time in five starts. The Tigers are being cautious with their lefty in his return from flexor tendon surgery, and he was limited to 77 pitches in this one. Skubal can be a good fantasy pitcher, though his workload restrictions cap his upside at the moment, and that may not change until 2024. He's tentatively set to take the mound again next Sunday against the Rays.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Dominant in first win

Skubal (1-1) earned the win Monday, allowing two hits over five scoreless innings in a 5-1 win over San Francisco. He struck out nine. It was quite a bounce-back performance from Skubal after he allowed seven runs over four innings in his last start against Kansas City. The 26-year-old left-hander logged a season-high nine strikeouts en route to his first win of the year. Skubal still threw only 82 pitches over five innings as the Tigers continue to monitor his workload following his return from last August's elbow surgery. Skubal's ERA is now down to 3.71 with a 0.88 WHIP and an encouraging 23:3 K:BB through his first four starts (17 innings) this season. His next outing is tentatively lined up for this weekend against the Marlins.
