Player Outlook
Expectations were high for Nick Lodolo entering his sophomore season, but he ended up making just seven starts before going down with a stress reaction in his left tibia. The southpaw appeared to be on the verge of a return in August, but a second stress reaction in the same tibia took a return off the table. Fortunately for Lodolo and the Reds, offseason surgery is not expected to be necessary. During his brief time on the field, Lodolo's stuff was down across the board. He allowed 10 home runs in 34.1 innings for an unsightly 27.0% HR/FB. Lodolo admitted in spring training that he was having some trouble adjusting to the pitch clock, so that may have played a factor. No matter how you slice it, it was a lost season for the 2019 No. 7 overall pick. He was still able to rack up the strikeouts even with diminished velocity last season (28.3 K%), and Lodolo is just entering his age-26 season. Cincinnati will have him take the ball every fifth day for as long as his body allows.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Improves to 2-0

Lodolo (2-0) earned the win Friday over the Angels, allowing one run on seven hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out six. While not as dominant as his first outing this year, Lodolo turned in an incredibly efficient performance against the Angles, needing just 80 pitches to make it into the seventh inning en route to a second win in as many starts. The 26-year-old southpaw has allowed just one run through his first 12 innings this year after he pitched to a 6.29 ERA across seven starts in an injury-plagued 2023 campaign. Lodolo is slated for a tougher matchup against the Phillies in his next outing.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Strikes out 10 in return

Lodolo (1-0) earned the win over the White Sox on Saturday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out 10 over 5.2 scoreless innings. Lodolo was completely dominant in his return from the injured list, racking up 16 swings and misses on 91 pitches (62 strikes). The lefty showed a great feel for his looping curveball and looked nothing like a pitcher that just missed nearly a full calendar year of major-league action. He suffered a second stress reaction in his left tibia late last season and reported that he still did not feel 100 percent entering spring training, so the health concerns aren't going anywhere, but he appears to be all systems go for the time being. Lodolo lines up for a home start against the Angels next weekend.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Activated from IL

The Reds reinstated Lodolo (calf) from the 15-day injured list Saturday. A left calf injury has kept Lodolo on the injured list since the beginning of the year, but he will return to make his season debut Saturday against the White Sox. The 26-year-old southpaw made two starts during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville, surrendering five earned runs across 7.2 innings while striking out 10 batters and walking three. Carson Spiers was optioned to Louisville in a corresponding move.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Set for season debut Saturday

Reds manager David Bell said Monday that Lodolo (calf) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to make his season debut Saturday against the White Sox, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Lodolo struggled in his final rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Louisville, allowing four runs over 2.2 innings. He tossed 64 pitches in that outing after throwing 77 pitches in his first rehab start, so don't expect the left-hander to work deep into Saturday's game. Even in a favorable matchup against a White Sox lineup that's without both Eloy Jimenez (adductor) and Luis Robert (hip), Lodolo looks like an iffy fantasy play in his first start back due to workload concerns.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Final rehab start Sunday

Lodolo (calf) is scheduled to make his final minor-league rehab start Sunday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The left-hander threw 77 pitches during his previous rehab outing and should push up over 90 pitches Sunday. Lodolo had been targeting Wednesday versus the Brewers for his season debut, but he now lines up to face the White Sox next Friday.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Sharp in rehab outing

Lodolo (calf) struck out eight over five innings of one-run ball in his first rehab start with Triple-A Louisville on Sunday. Lodolo not only fanned eight batters but he also induced 17 swinging strikes on 77 pitches. It's a very encouraging performance from the left-hander as he works his way back from a left calf issue. Lodolo is expected to make one more rehab start later this week before joining the Reds' rotation on April 10 against the Brewers.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Targeting April 10 debut

Lodolo (calf) reported to Triple-A Louisville to begin a rehab assignment Sunday, and the Reds are targeting April 10 against the Brewers for his season debut, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The left-hander began the season on the injured list with left calf tenosynovitis, but he's on track to return after the 15-day minimum. Lodolo is scheduled for one additional start with Louisville after Sunday before joining Cincinnati's rotation.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Officially lands on IL

The Reds placed Lodolo on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with left calf tenosynovitis. Lodolo's stay on the IL shouldn't be much longer than the 15-day minimum, as he's already slated to pitch two games on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville and will likely make his regular-season debut when eligible in mid-April. The 26-year-old southpaw appeared in two Cactus League games this spring, surrendering one earned run over 4.2 innings while striking out five batters and walking two.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Pitching plans revealed

Lodolo (tibia) will remain in Arizona when the Reds break camp and pitch in a minor-league game Mar. 26, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Lodolo was behind other starters during spring training as he continues to have issues with his left leg, and he'll ramp up ahead of an expected regular-season debut Apr. 10. Following his outing next Tuesday, Lodolo will pitch in two games while on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Expected to be ready by April 10

Lodolo (tibia) is expected to be ready to make his season debut April 10 against the Brewers, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Lodolo is behind schedule after he reported that his leg still didn't feel 100 percent entering spring training, which led to the team ordering another round of scans. Nothing new turned up, and despite still not feeling at full strength, the left-hander has cruised through his two Cactus League starts (one run, five strikeouts in 4.2 innings). The tibia will remain a lingering concern given a recurrence of the injury ended his 2023 season, but Lodolo looks on track to be ready relatively early on in 2024, barring a setback. Andrew Abbott and Brandon Williamson (shoulder) are competing to fill Lodolo's rotation spot to begin the campaign.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Throws two perfect innings

Lodolo (tibia) struck out one over two hitless and scoreless innings in Sunday's spring start against the Guardians. Lodolo fired two perfect innings, and no ball made it out of the infield in his Cactus League debut. This was his first time pitching in 309 days since the left-hander suffered a stress fracture in his left tibia last year that limited him to seven starts. Lodolo told Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com that he felt good despite being anxious. The in-stadium scoreboard indicated his fastball topped out at 96 mph, up a few ticks from his average last season. Lodolo's slow progression through spring training will prevent him from being part of the first turn of the regular-season rotation, but he is expected to be ready soon after that.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Throws live batting practice

Lodolo (tibia) threw a live batting practice session Wednesday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Lodolo saw a specialist and underwent testing Monday as he deals with nagging discomfort in his left tibia. Reds manager David Bell also said the club had been set to meet Wednesday morning to discuss the next steps for the left-hander. What exactly came out of the exam and meeting remains unclear, but it would certainly appear to be a good sign that Lodolo is facing hitters again. The southpaw's status for Opening Day remains very much in question.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Heading for testing

Lodolo is throwing a bullpen session Sunday and will see a specialist Monday for testing on his left tibia, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. It's an interesting situation for Lodolo, who continues to throw off a mound despite ongoing discomfort around his left tibia, where a stress reaction caused him to miss much of last season. The 26-year-old's outlook for Opening Day should receive some clarity once the results of Monday's testing are announced.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Leg still not 100 percent

Reds manager David Bell said Friday that Lodolo is still not 100 percent and will have his injured left leg "re-scanned," Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The southpaw missed much of the 2023 season with a stress reaction in his left tibia, and he's still having trouble getting past the injury. While Lodolo is able to throw without issue, he "still feels it" in his leg the day after, per Bell. Being ready for the beginning of the season is still possible if Lodolo can be game-ready by the end of next week, but that looks to be very much in question.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Spring debut at least one week away

Reds manager David Bell said Wednesday that Lodolo (tibia) is at least a week away from his Cactus League debut, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Bell noted that Graham Ashcraft (toe) is slated for his spring debut within the next week, adding that Lodolo's appearance would come after Aschraft's. It's still a relatively vague timetable but further emphasizes that the Reds will be proceeding cautiously with Lodolo this spring after he missed much of last season with a stress reaction to his left tibia. Lodolo acknowledged at the start of camp that while the leg doesn't hurt while he's pitching, it's not yet 100 percent.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Could throw live BP soon

Reds manager David Bell said Thursday that Lodolo (tibia) is slated to face live hitters in his next throwing session, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Lodolo avoided offseason surgery to address a stress reaction to his left tibia, an injury he suffered in August while on a rehab assignment. The young southpaw is seemingly healthy again for the early stages of spring training, but the Reds have been taking it slowly with him following a lost season in which he was limited to just seven starts with the big club. Lodolo has thus far been pain-free during his bullpen sessions, and facing hitters without any discomfort will be the final hurdle he needs to clear before he's integrated into the Cactus League pitching schedule. He's still tracking to be part of the Reds' Opening Day rotation, though any setback with his leg or any other sort of health concern that crops up would likely result in him beginning the season on the injured list.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Pain-free in Arizona

Lodolo (leg) threw a bullpen session Saturday and acknowledged being pain-free, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Lodolo, who was limited to seven starts in 2023, has been in Arizona since mid-January and estimated he's thrown off a mound seven or eight times. While the left-hander's leg is pain-free when pitching, he acknowledged that it isn't feeling 100 percent. "That's where I got into trouble last year. I was feeling it and tried to continue going for a month-and-a-half. It just gave out," he said. "We're trying to avoid that. We're being smarter with the build-up." Saturday's session, in which Lodolo threw 25 pitches, was his second since camp opened earlier this week; he tossed 20 pitches Wednesday. Reds manager David Bell said Lodolo could be ready by Opening Day if "everything goes well, goes perfect."

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Projected for rotation

Lodolo (leg) is projected to be a member of the Reds' rotation, per Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. Lodolo was limited to just seven starts in 2023 due to a lower-leg injury and will need to prove he's 100 percent healthy before the Reds hand him the final spot in the rotation. And, there will be no shortage of competitors for the job, as Brandon Williamson, Nick Martinez and Connor Phillips are in the mix. Cincinnati's staff should have the depth to manage any holes in the rotation that typically crop up during the regular season.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Will not require surgery

Lodolo will not require surgery on his injured left tibia, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. He is however done for the season, as previously reported. Lodolo finished the 2023 campaign having thrown just 34.1 innings with a 6.29 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and 47:10 K:BB. The southpaw still has plenty of upside heading into 2024, but he'll have to show he can stay healthy.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Done for rest of year

Lodolo (tibia) was ruled out Thursday for the remainder of the 2023 season, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. It's rather unsurprising news after Lodolo suffered a second stress reaction in his left tibia last week while making a rehab start for the Reds' Triple-A affiliate in Louisville. The 25-year-old left-hander finishes the season with a 2-1 record, 6.29 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and 47:10 K:BB in just seven major-league starts covering 34.1 innings.
