Player Outlook
Noelvi Marte's outlook changed completely in March when he was suspended 80 games for PEDs. He remains prospect-eligible after logging just 114 at-bats last season, and in that time he showed off his exciting combination of power (115.6-mph maxEV, 46.1 HardHit%), aggressiveness on the bases (6-for-8 on SB attempts) and ability to put the ball in play (77.5 Contact%). His 52.8 GB% was uncharacteristically high (45.8 GB% at Double-A, 41.6 GB% at Triple-A), and if that normalizes, he could eventually hit 25 homers in his first full season. Marte's home park, strikeout rate and stolen-base output give him a rare combination of a high floor and a high ceiling long term. Scouts were lukewarm on his defense at the hot corner while he was in the minors and that was the weakest part of his game in his big-league debut. He can make highlight plays, but it's possible he eventually moves to left field, although that probably wouldn't happen in 2024.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Suspended 80 games for PEDs

Marte was suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball on Friday for violating the joint drug prevention and treatment program, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Marte tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug Boldenone and now will be ineligible to play until well into June. The 22-year-old had been the favorite to be the Reds' Opening Day third baseman after slashing .316/.366/.456 in 35 contests for Cincinnati in 2023. Jeimer Candelario now figures to see most of his playing time at third base, while Christian Encarnacion-Strand should settle into more at-bats at first base. The Reds could also opt to use Spencer Steer more often on the infield.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Makes spring debut

Marte started at third base and went 1-for-2 in Saturday's spring game against the Rockies. Marte made his spring debut after coping with a hamstring injury that delayed his participation in game action. He hit a couple of balls hard and told Mark Sheldon of MLB.com that he felt comfortable before he was removed in the fourth inning. "It was good to have Marte back, he looked good," manager David Bell said. "We didn't want to do anything crazy on the bases, but he was 100 percent. He's completely freed up to play his normal game next time out." Marte should have enough time to build up for Opening Day and is projected to be the Reds' primary third baseman.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Cleared for spring debut Saturday

Marte (hamstring) will make his Cactus League debut Saturday against the Rockies, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Marte has been brought along methodically this spring after suffering a Grade 2 hamstring strain in late November while playing in the Dominican Winter League. There is still time for the 22-year-old to ramp up before Opening Day, but the delayed start to his spring won't help his chances of nailing down a regular role at third base.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Tracking toward March 2 debut

Reds manager David Bell said Thursday that he expects Marte (hamstring) to make his Cactus League debut March 2 versus the Rockies, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The young infielder will be held out for roughly the first week of spring training games while he continues to heal up from the Grade 2 hamstring strain he suffered in late November while playing in the Dominican Winter League. Marte hasn't experienced any setbacks while taking part in workouts since the beginning of spring, but the Reds are being mindful of managing his workload early on in camp. He's still on track to be ready to go for Opening Day, but Marte might not be guaranteed a full-time role despite posting a solid .822 OPS over 123 plate appearances with the big club in 2023 following his late-season call-up. Even though the Reds let Joey Votto walk in free agency, the team signed Jeimer Candelario to a three-year, $45 million deal. Candelario is expected to see plenty of reps at third base on days he isn't being used at first base or designated hitter, and Jonathan India (foot) is also moving into a utility role in 2024 and could poach starts from Marte at the hot corner.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Will miss first five spring games

Marte (hamstring) will miss the Reds' first five spring training games, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The Reds have put Marte on a more "deliberate'" spring training schedule to avoid setbacks, and they still expect him to be ready by Opening Day.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Not at full speed yet

Marte is not yet running at full speed after suffering a hamstring strain in late November in the Dominican Winter League, Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. It sounds like Marte is recovered from his injury, but the Reds are having him ramp things up slowly in camp to be safe. The 22-year-old played a bit at shortstop and second base in addition to third base last season with the Reds, but he'll focus mainly on the hot corner this spring as he attempts to win that job. Marte slashed an impressive .316/.366/.456 in 35 contests for Cincinnati in 2023.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Battling hamstring strain

Marte suffered a strained hamstring while playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Marte will no longer be able to participate in winter ball, but he should be ready to go for the start of spring training. The 22-year-old infielder slashed .316/.366/.456 across 123 big-league plate appearances last year and is expected to begin 2024 as Cincinnati's primary third baseman.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Raking to wrap up season

Marte went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and three RBI in Saturday's 15-6 loss to the Cardinals. The 21-year-old is having a fantastic finish to the season, hitting safely in seven straight games and batting .355 (11-for-31) over that stretch with two of his three homers since his mid-August promotion to the majors. Marte is expected to be a key part of the Reds' future, and while his spot in the lineup has been secure to close out 2023 due to the absence of Matt McLain (oblique), the team will likely have to do something to alleviate its infield roster crunch in the offseason, either by trading a player such as Jonathan India or by shifting someone like Marte to the outfield.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Smacks second homer in blowout win

Marte went 2-for-5 with a solo home run -- his second of the season -- and an additional RBI in Friday's 19-2 win over St. Louis. Marte slugged one of six Reds home runs on the night, one shy of matching the franchise single-game record. Cincinnati was able to keep its faint hopes for a wild-card spot alive with the win, and Marte has been an integral contributor to the team's postseason push. The 21-year-old rookie has recorded at least one hit in 14 of his last 15 starts and is slashing .357/.400/.471 in September.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Returns to lineup

Marte (nose) is starting at shortstop and batting seventh Wednesday versus the Tigers in his return to the lineup. Marte scored as a pinch runner in Tuesday's win over the Tigers, but this will be his first start since he suffered a broken nose pregame Saturday. He's filling in at shortstop for Elly De La Cruz, who is getting a day off.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Scores as pinch runner

Marte (nose) entered Tuesday's game as a pinch runner and scored a run in a 6-5 win over the Tigers. Marte made his first appearance since sustaining a broken nose during pre-game warmups Saturday. He replaced Nick Martini as the automatic runner in the top of the 10th inning, scored the eventual game-winning run, then played third base in the bottom of the frame. It's unclear if the Reds are confident enough to have Marte play an entire game, but he looks like he's trending in that direction.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Avoids concussion, is day-to-day

Marte (face) has avoided a concussion and is considered day-to-day, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Marte was a late scratch from Saturday's lineup against the Cardinals after being hit in the face with a ball during pregame. He was treated for a cut and a bruise. He did not require any stitches, though, and precautionary concussion testing came back clean. "There's a chance he's back pretty soon," Reds manager David Bell said after Saturday's loss to St. Louis. Cincinnati is off Monday, so it's possible the team will hold Marte out until Tuesday just to be safe.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Steals, scores in loss

Marte went 1-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Diamondbacks. In a game dominated by pitching and some of the league's most exciting rookies, Marte's eighth-inning walk was nearly the difference. After getting on base, the Cincinnati rookie stole second base and scored a go-ahead run on Tyler Stephenson's single. The lead lasted a half inning before Arizona rookie Corbin Carroll delivered a two-run home run. Marte has stolen a base in three of the five games in which he's appeared.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Possible waiver wire pickups

It made sense for the Reds to bring Elly De La Cruz and Christian Encarnacion-Strand into a crowded situation, given their production at Triple-A, but Marte was merely holding his own there as a 21-year-old and, in fact, was batting just .204 (11 for 54) in 16 August games. He's been much buzzed-about from the time he was 17 years old, but his minor-league production would be better described as good than great. Meanwhile, the only way to get him in the lineup at third base is to confine De La Cruz to shortstop, Matt McLain to second and Spencer Steer to left field -- and that's without factoring in Jonathan India's and Jake Fraley's eventual return from the IL. It's never a bad idea to take a shot on upside, but between the developmental and playing time concerns, Marte is better left for leagues that roster more than 300 players.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Debuts as pinch runner

Marte entered as a pinch runner and stole third base in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Blue Jays. Marte had more than 20 steals each of the last two seasons in the minors. He was called up earlier in the day and is expected to serve as Cincinnati's primary third baseman, per Rob Terranova of MLB.com, while Spencer Steer takes on more work in left field. While it may seem crowded on the roster, injuries to Jake Fraley (toe) and Jonathan India (foot) mean there will be opportunities for Marte.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Heading to Triple-A

Marte was promoted to Triple-A Louisville on Sunday, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports. Marte missed time over the first half of June due to a hamstring strain, but he's been back in action recently and has appeared in three games at Double-A Chattanooga over the past few days. The 21-year-old has slashed .281/.356/.464 with eight homers, 37 runs, 25 RBI and 10 stolen bases over 50 games at Chattanooga this year and will now get a chance to compete against a higher level of competition.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Slow start at Double-A

Marte is hitting .186 with one home run, four steals and a 17:7 K:BB in 15 games with Double-A Chattanooga. While Marte has been a high-profile prospect since 2019, this is his first exposure to Double-A pitching and his first season as a primary third baseman, although he hasn't completely moved off shortstop yet. The slugging infielder hasn't gotten to much power yet (.119 ISO) and has been a bit unlucky (.244 BABIP), but his 25.4 percent strikeout rate and 10.4 percent walk rate are reasonable marks for a 21-year-old at Double-A.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Optioned to Double-A

Marte was optioned Sunday to Double-A Chattanooga by the Reds, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Goldsmith further reports that the Reds intend to move Marte to third base. Reds manager David Bell said: "I do think third base is the right spot for him. Can he play short? Probably. He has done it. I think he's going to find a home at third base. I love the actions he has there, he has plenty of arm. I think it's going to be a good home." Marte is one of the top names in the Cincinnati system, but he wasn't a candidate for the Opening Day roster. The former Seattle prospect will head to Chattanooga and could make his MLB debut over the summer with strong results at the upper levels of the minors.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Finishes 2022 strong with new org

Marte put up a .293/.397/.443 line with four homers and 10 steals over 30 games with High-A Dayton after being acquired from Seattle at the trade deadline. It seems almost unfair that the Reds can have so many of the game's top shortstop prospects, with Marte and Edwin Arroyo having joined Elly De La Cruz and Matt McLain in the organization this summer. Arguably the jewel of the Luis Castillo deal, Marte was just as good with Dayton as he had been with Everett in the Mariners' organization before the trade. His final line for 2022: .279/.371/.458 with 19 homers, 23 steals and a 59:107 BB:K across 115 games. Marte will also get some extra reps in the Arizona Fall League, per RedsMinorLeagues.com.

  • Mariners' Noelvi Marte: Struggling for AquaSox

Marte owns a .234/.329/.365 slash line with 17 extra-base hits and 23 RBI across 20 games at High-A Everett this season. The precocious 20-year-old has hit a bit of a speed bump this season after an impressive showing over a modest eight-game stint with High-A Everett at the tail end of the 2021 minor-league campaign. Marte has seen a slight bump in strikeout rate to 25.5 percent from his 22.2 percent figure at Modesto last season, and Brent Stecker of 710 ESPN Seattle reports Marte's average has been under .250 since May 25.
