• Royals' Brady Singer: Gives up two in no-decision

  Singer did not factor into the decision in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the White Sox, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out five. All of the damage against Singer came on Paul DeJong's two-run homer in the second inning. The right-hander hadn't given up more than a single run in his three starts prior to Wednesday -- Singer's now allowed four runs in 23.1 innings this season, all coming via the home-run ball. Overall, he's 2-0 with a 1.54 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 23:7 K:BB. Singer's next start is tentatively scheduled for early next week against Toronto.

Singer began implementing the pitches a little late last season after some initial hesitation. This season, though, he's committed to using them as integral parts of his repertoire, adding them to his sinker, gyro slider and changeup. All three swinging strikeouts he induced during his Cactus League debut Wednesday versus the Mariners came on the sweeper. Singer has predominantly been a two-pitch pitcher in his career (the sinker and slider) and has struggled to miss bats with consistency. Perhaps the four-seamer and sweeper will allow him to pile up more strikeouts.

  Singer improved to 6-8 in Sunday's 8-4 win over the Rays after allowing four runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out four across eight innings. Singer was staked to an early lead and never looked back. He held the Rays scoreless through seven innings before surrendering four straight hits -- including two home runs -- to open up the eighth, which resulted in four runs. Overall, it was an efficient outing for Singer, who needed just 92 pitches to record his third career start of eight innings or more. It was a great bounce-back effort after he'd ended the first half on a sour note. He's working on a 5.70 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 81:35 K:BB in 102.2 innings this season and projects for a road start against the Yankees during the upcoming week.
