Player Outlook
It seems like Jonathan India and the Reds may be headed for divorce, as Cincinnati has made it known that the second baseman is available via trade. India was critical of how the team assessed his injury over the summer; a setback in his recovery prompted a second MRI which showed a more significant tear of his plantar fascia. He believed he should have been shut down for a longer period of time initially. Just a few short years ago, India was NL Rookie of the Year and looked like an important part of the team's long-term future, but the organization has seen an influx of young talent at the major-league level. India hit 17 homers and stole 14 bases in just 119 games last season, though his batted-ball numbers and sprint speed leave something to be desired. If he's dealt to a more pitcher-friendly park, India's numbers could take a hit. If he stays put, he could get lost in the shuffle.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Looks healthy in return

India started at second base and went 1-for-4 with a walk and stolen base in Tuesday's 9-5 loss to Milwaukee. India, who was scratched from Monday's game after taking a batted ball off his leg during pregame warmups, returned to the lineup. All signs indicate the scratch was a precautionary move by manager David Bell. India played the field, batted leadoff and recorded his second steal.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Back in lineup Tuesday

India (leg) will start at second base and bat leadoff in Tuesday's game against the Brewers. India had to be scratched from Monday's lineup after being hit on the left leg by a ball during batting practice. He's fine, though, and will be in his usual leadoff spot as the Reds go up against right-hander Joe Ross.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Won't play Monday after all

India (leg) has been scratched from Monday's lineup against the Brewers, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. India was initially set to start at DH and hit out of the leadoff spot, but he was scratched with a left leg contusion from being hit during batting practice. Bubba Thompson will enter the starting lineup at center field and bat ninth, while Will Benson shifts to DH.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Remains in Monday's lineup

Manager David Bell said India remains in the lineup for Monday's game against the Brewers despite suffering an unspecified injury during batting practice, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. India appeared to get struck by a ball while some teammates were taking batting practice, but it's apparently not a serious injury. There remains a chance the 27-year-old is scratched closer to first pitch, but for now he's still penciled in to bat leadoff as the designated hitter.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Injured during pregame

India suffered an apparent injury during batting practice ahead of Monday's game versus the Brewers, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. India was standing in foul territory while others were taking BP and it's possible he was struck by a ball before walking off the field with the trainer. According to Goldsmith, India returned to the field to take some BP himself, though it's unclear if that means he'll be available. He had been set to serve as the Reds' designated hitter and leadoff man Monday, but it's now possible he gets scratched.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Starts at second base

India started at second base and batted leadoff in Thursday's 8-2 win over Washington on Opening Day. He went 1-for-4 with a walk. The Reds' planned second baseman, Matt McLain, injured his shoulder during spring training and underwent surgery Tuesday. He was placed on the 60-day injured list Thursday, which means India, who was training for a utility role, is expected to have a steady home for the first two months of the season.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Plays familiar role

India started at second base and went 0-for-3 in Thursday's spring game against Seattle. India was back at second base but has been deployed at several positions during Cactus League action. The plan to convert him to a utility player is still active, but a shoulder injury suffered by Matt McLain could change India's role. McLain, who was set to be the primary second baseman this season, is getting a second opinion and possibly facing surgery. Should that happen, India could become the Reds' everyday second baseman, the same role he filled in 2023.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Still in utility role

India started in left field and went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Wednesday's spring game against Texas. India, who was Cincinnati's primary starter at second base last season, continues to move around the diamond as planned. He could return to second base at some point, because the Reds announced Monday that their planned starter at the position, Matt McLain, will open the season on the injured list due to a shoulder injury. McLain plans to get a second opinion, and there's uncertainty as to how long he'll be unavailable. For now, it looks like manager David Bell will continue giving India work all over the field, but that could change depending on McLain's prognosis. Since the club announced the injury, Spencer Steer started at second in three consecutive spring games, and the Reds acquired Santiago Espinal from the Blue Jays.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Gets outfield start

India started in left field and went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's spring game against the Guardians. India batted leadoff and homered in the bottom of the first inning. He's transitioning to a utility role that will mostly involve him playing the infield, but the club has exposed him to outfield reps during camp. This was India's second Cactus League start, but the first one was rained out after four innings Friday. India will mostly see time at the three infield base positions.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Makes spring debut

India started at first base and went 0-for-2 with a walk before rain cancelled Friday's spring game against the Dodgers. He flawlessly handled all chances in the field. India's spring was delayed by a foot injury that plagued him in 2023. He's shifting from second base to a utility role this season, which will impact his fantasy value. The position versatility is helpful, but a consistent path to at-bats is not guaranteed. The latter changed Friday when MLB suspended Noelvi Marte, who was the projected starter at third base, 80 games for violating the drug prevention and treatment program. That paves the way for India, Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Jeimer Candelario to get regular opportunities between first base, third base and designated hitter.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Set for Cactus League debut Friday

Reds manager David Bell said Wednesday that India (foot) is slated to make his Cactus League debut Friday against the Dodgers, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. India has been brought along slowly in the Reds' camp because he still wasn't completely recovered from the plantar fasciitis in his left foot that plagued him last season. It's not clear whether he's 100 percent yet, but he's at least feeling well enough to test out the foot in games. While he has played only second base to this point in his big-league career, India is slated to fill a utility role for Cincinnati this season.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Utility transition begins

India (toe) took grounders at second and third base during the early days of spring training, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. He's also been exposed to the outfield. India, who was Cincinnati's primary second baseman in 2023, was informed this offseason that Matt McLain (oblique) will see most of the opportunities at the keystone, leaving India to take on a utility role. That transition has begun. Reds manager David Bell said India will get opportunities at first base, second base, third base, left field and designated hitter. The 27-year-old India played third base in college, but the other fielding positions will be new.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Looking at utility role

India (foot) is expected to play three infield positions and possibly left field, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Cincinnati's primary second baseman in 2023, India will shift to a utility role, as manager David Bell plans to deploy a middle infield of Matt McLain at second and Elly De La Cruz at shortstop. To keep India's bat in the lineup, the infielder will get acclimated to playing first and third base, though left field is seen as his most unlikely landing spot. For now, India is building up endurance in the foot he injured last season and is expected to be ready for Cactus League play.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Still battling plantar fasciitis

India is going through a ramp-up progression after having a setback with the plantar fasciitis in his left foot this offseason, Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. India missed nearly two months of action during the second half of the 2023 season with the injury and it popped back up again over the winter, affecting his offseason workouts. The 27-year-old took batting practice and fielded ground balls Tuesday and the foot "feels fine and he feels no pain," Reds general manager Brad Meador said, adding that India just needs to build up endurance at this point. While it does seem as though he's currently trending in a positive direction, the nagging injury and uncertain playing time outlook for India creates a cloudy fantasy forecast.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Agrees to two-year contract

India signed a two-year, $8.8 million contract with the Reds on Friday to avoid arbitration, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. He can earn an additional $2.05 million in 2025 in incentives. India had been arbitration-eligible for the first time and will have one additional year of control in 2026. The 27-year-old slashed .244/.338/.407 with 17 home runs and 14 stolen bases over 119 contests for Cincinnati in 2023. India has played only second base to this point in the majors but is expected to be used at multiple positions in 2024.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Could see time at 1B, LF

India could see some playing time at first base and/or left field this season, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. It's looking like the Reds will hang onto India going into the season rather than trade him to alleviate some of their infield logjam. That would make for a difficult juggling act for manager David Bell as he looks to give everyone playing time, and it sounds like part of the solution could be to break India in at some new positions. To this point, the only position the 27-year-old has played with the Reds has been second base, although he did play plenty at third base and a little at shortstop in the minors.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: On base four times in win

India went 2-for-2 with one double, two walks and two runs scored in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Pirates. India reached base in all four plate appearances Sunday and scored the game-winning run in a contest the Reds desperately needed to win. Since being reinstated from the IL on Sept. 10 following a bout with plantar fasciitis, India had only five hits in his previous 42 at-bats going into Sunday's game. Over 509 plate appearances, India's now slashing .242/.334/.400 with 16 home runs, 58 RBI, 73 runs and 13 stolen bases.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Steps out of lineup

India is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets. India started all six games since he returned from the injured list last weekend, and he'll take a seat Sunday after he went 4-for-24 with two homers and five RBI. Spencer Steer will start at second base and bat leadoff for Cincinnati.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Slugs game-winning homer

India went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Friday's 5-3 victory over the Mets. The clutch two-run shot in the seventh served as the game-winner for the Reds. Despite the homer, India has only three hits in 20 at-bats over the course of five games since returning from a stint on the injured list due to plantar fasciitis. In 108 games played, he's now slashing .246/.331/.411 with 16 home runs, 57 RBI, 70 runs and 13 steals over 414 at-bats.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Reinstated early, starting Sunday

India (foot) was activated from the 10-day injured list and is starting at second base Sunday against the Cardinals, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The 26-year-old was previously expected to make his return from the injured list Tuesday in Detroit after starting a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Friday, but he'll instead rejoin Cincinnati for Sunday's series finale versus St. Louis. India has been sidelined since late July with plantar fasciitis but should operate as the Reds' primary second baseman down the stretch, though regular off days may be in store, especially given the club's glut of infield talent.
