Vierling went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored in Wednesday's 7-5 loss to the Rays. With Gio Urshela (hamstring) and Andy Ibanez (hamstring) both on the injured list, Vierling has been seeing regular time at third base recently. He's now batting a solid .273, and the 27-year-old will retain decent fantasy value as long he's starting most days. It remains to be seen what the Tigers will do when Urshela or Ibanez returns, though Vierling will likely shift into a utility role, as he's capable of playing in the outfield as well as at the hot corner.... Tigers' Matt Vierling: Back to bench Saturday
Vierling is not in Saturday's starting lineup against the Athletics. Vierling got the start Friday against left-hander JP Sears and finished the game 1-for-3 with a solo home run. Against Athletics right-hander Paul Blackburn on Saturday, the Tigers have shifted Mark Canha to right field, while Kerry Carpenter starts at DH.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Hits first 2024 home run
Vierling went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Friday's 5-4 win over the A's. Vierling batted leadoff for the Tigers and managed his first home run of the season in the fourth inning. The utility player got the start with lefty JP Sears on the mound for Oakland, but he's still mostly a reserve option at this point, which limits his fantasy upside. That could change if Vierling is able to earn more regular playing time at some point, as he batted a respectable .261 with 10 home runs across 134 games in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Scores run off bench Sunday
Vierling entered Sunday's game against the White Sox as a pinch runner in the top of the ninth inning, scoring on Andy Ibanez's single. Vierling stayed in the game to play center field for the bottom of the ninth. After receiving the Opening Day nod in right field against lefty Garrett Crochet, Vierling was on the bench for the final two games of the series against right-handers Michael Soroka and Erick Fedde. There was some talk in spring training that Vierling could be in the mix at third base, but Ibanez, Gio Urshela and Zach McKinstry all appear ahead of him at the hot corner, meaning Vierling will likely continue to operate mostly as a short-side platoon outfielder.... Tigers' Matt Vierling: Remains in mix for third base job
Vierling remains in competition with Gio Urshela for the Tigers' third base job, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Manager A.J. Hinch said prior to Tuesday's game against the Phillies that "It's still very competitive who's going to get the reps at third base." Zach McKinstry and Andy Ibanez are also in the mix at the hot corner, but it's expected to come down to Urshela or Vierling. Urshela has played the most third base for Detroit this spring, but Vierling is starting there Wednesday and will handle the position two of the next three games, as well.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Hits first spring home run
Vierling went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. Vierling connected for his first home run in Grapefruit League play, and it's mostly been a struggle this spring, as he's batting just .160 across 11 games. The versatile 27-year-old may have to settle for a bench role this year with Gio Urshela around to play third base, which would cut into Vierling's fantasy value.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Favorite to start at third base
Vierling is the favorite to serve as the Tigers' starting third baseman to begin the 2024 season, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Vierling was traded from Philadelphia to Detroit last offseason, and he played at third base in 35 of his 134 games during the 2023 campaign. Overall, he slashed .261/.329/.388 with 10 homers, 63 runs, 44 RBI and six steals and should have a chance to earn regular playing time at the hot corner early in 2024. If Vierling struggles as the starting third baseman, the Tigers could turn to Zach McKinstry, Colt Keith, Tyler Nevin or Andy Ibanez at some point.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Posts big line in season finale
Vierling went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a two-run home run and two runs scored in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Guardians. Vierling finished his first season in Detroit on a positive note, blasting his 10th home run and recording his 20th and 21st doubles. The versatile 26-year-old ended up playing in 134 games, seeing his most regular run in right field, though he also played in left, center and at third base. Vierling figures to have a similar role in 2024, with his versatility carrying more value for his MLB team than for fantasy managers, though he could be an option in deeper leagues if the playing time is there.... Tigers' Matt Vierling: Hits grand slam Thursday
Vierling went 1-for-3 with a walk, a grand slam and a second run scored in Thursday's win over the Reds. Vierling waited for the eighth inning to hit his grand slam, but it broke open what had been a 4-1 game. The utility player is up to nine home runs this season, which is one more than his total across his first two years in the league with the Phillies. Vierling hasn't been a great fantasy asset this season, though he should continue to see regular playing time down the stretch.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Sits amid slump
Vierling is not in Saturday's lineup against the White Sox. Vierling is hitting .182 with two runs and one RBI over his last 10 games. Recent call-up Andre Lipcius gets the start at third base while batting sixth.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Getting Sunday off
Vierling is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros. Vierling will hit the bench after he started in each of the past seven games while going 3-for-26 with three walks against 11 strikeouts. With Vierling and Akil Baddoo getting Sunday off, Andy Ibanez and Miguel Cabrera will enter the Detroit lineup at second base and designated hitter, respectively.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Three hits, triple in win
Vierling went 3-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's victory over the Twins. Vierling's been swinging a hot bat of late -- he's now hit safely in six straight games while going 14-for-41 (.341) over his last 10 contests. The 26-year-old Vierling has seen regular playing time with the Tigers this season, and he's been making the most of it. His slash line is up to .272/.330/.394 with seven homers, 37 runs scored, 27 RBI and five steals across 348 plate appearances this season.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Taking seat Tuesday
Vierling is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Twins. The Tigers are opting to use Kerry Carpenter in right field and Miguel Cabrera at designated hitter versus right-hander Sonny Gray. Vierling has actually hit righties better than lefties this season, but nearly all his days off have come when Detroit has faced a right-handed starting pitcher.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Takes seat Monday
Vierling is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants. Vierling will head to the bench for Monday's make-up game after he started in all three of the Tigers' contests with the Padres over the weekend while going a collective 2-for-12 at the dish. While Vierling rests, Kerry Carpenter will pick up a start in right field and Miguel Cabrera will enter the lineup at designated hitter.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Not starting Sunday
Vierling is out of the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Blue Jays. Vierling started the past nine games and will receive a day off after he hit .364/.432/.485 during that span. Kerry Carpenter will man right field while Miguel Cabrera serves as the designated hitter.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Back in action Wednesday
Vierling (back) will start in center field and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Royals. Vierling will check back into the Detroit outfield after a bout with back spasms kept him on the bench each of the past three games. Now that Vierling is ostensibly healthy again, Jake Marisnick will likely move back into a fourth-outfielder role.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Leading off Saturday
Vierling is starting in right field and batting first in Saturday's game against the Twins. With Zach McKinstry on the bench, the Tigers will turn to Vierling in the leadoff spot. The latter has consecutive three-hit games, pushing his season batting average to .268, and he could see more opportunities at the top of the order if he stays hot at the plate. Vierling has also chipped in four stolen bases this season, though he has been caught stealing five times.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Tallies three hits Thursday
Vierling went 3-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored in Thursday's win over the Twins. Vierling also got picked off when he left too early trying to steal second base, but it was a positive night overall. He started in center field before shifting over to right when Jake Marisnick entered as a defensive replacement. With Riley Greene (fibula) out, Vierling should remain a lineup staple most days. Even when Greene eventually returns, Vierling figures to be the top option in right.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Absent from lineup
VIerling is not in the lineup for Tuesday's contest against Atlanta. Vierling played center field in his first game back from the injured list Monday but will begin this one on the bench. The Tigers are going with Jake Marisnick in center and Zach McKinstry in right against Spencer Strider.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Matt Vierling: Activated, starting in CF
The Tigers activated Vierling (back) from the 10-day injured list Monday. He'll start in center field and bat sixth in Detroit's series opener with Atlanta. Vierling has been sidelined since late May with a back issue but is ready to roll following a short rehab assignment. He's seen most of his action in right field this season, but he could end up settling into a regular role in center for the time being while Riley Greene (lower leg) is likely multiple weeks away from a return from the IL....
