Player Outlook
Joe Ryan had a roller-coaster season for the Twins as he had a 2.98 ERA with a 9.65 K/9 and 0.91 WHIP through his first 15 starts of the season. He then seemingly ran out of gas by posting a 8.63 ERA and 1.81 WHIP over this next seven starts before he went on the injured list with a strained groin. His final eight starts after he returned were not much better (5.90 ERA) and the Twins limited him to one short two-inning start in the playoffs. Ryan doesn't have great velocity (92.3 average mph fastball) but has an extremely deceptive four-seam fastball that helped him generate an excellent 29.3% K% and 14.2% swinging strike rate. His weakness is as a fly-ball pitcher (31.6% GB%) he can be prone to the long ball. Home runs were especially an issue last season with a career-worst 1.78 HR/9 driven by a high 14.9% HB/FB%. He usually limits the damage for home runs by typically having one of the lowest walk rates in baseball (5.1% BB%). Ryan will be counted on at the top of the Twins rotation and could improve significantly if he can keep the ball in the park and improve one of his off-speed pitches, which all took a step backward last year.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Working on new sinker

Ryan has been working on a new sinker this spring and threw it in Friday's spring training start, MLB.com reports. Ryan gave up two runs with two strikeouts and a walk over two innings Friday against Boston. Ryan doesn't have great velocity (92.3 average mph fastball in 2023) but has an extremely deceptive four-seam fastball that helped him generate an excellent 29.3 strikeout percentage and 14.2 percent swinging strike rate in 2023. However, his secondary pitches all took a step backward last season, so the development of another pitch could be a significant addition and is something to monitor this spring. He worked on the new sinker at Driveline in Arizona in the offseason.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Would start potential Game 3

Ryan will start Game 3 of the AL Wild Card Series versus the Blue Jays on Thursday, if necessary, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Ryan had been lined up for the start, so this doesn't come as a surprise. The Twins hope they can save him for the ALDS, of course, which they would be able to do if they are able to eliminate Toronto with a Game 2 victory. Ryan boasted a 197:34 K:BB over 161.2 innings during the regular season, but his 4.51 ERA points to the inconsistency he dealt with.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Struggles through five frames

Ryan did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing six runs on eight hits and one walk over five innings against the Rockies. He struck out six. Ryan allowed three homers on the night, bringing his season total to 32 -- more than all but four other pitchers. The right-hander finishes the regular season with a 4.51 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 197 strikeouts in 161.2 innings, but over his past five outings, he holds an ERA of 6.20 and a WHIP of 1.46. His next start will likely come in the wild-card round, as the Twins look to break an 18-game playoff losing skid that dates back to Oct. 5, 2004.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Strikes out 10 in win

Ryan (11-10) got the win over the Angels on Sunday, allowing three runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out 10 over six innings. Ryan struck out double-digit batters for the sixth time this season and for the first time since July 21. The seven hits were the most he's allowed since Aug. 2, but he displayed excellent command after walking multiple batters in each of his last two starts. Ryan's inconsistencies have left a question mark for the Twins' third rotation spot for the playoffs; however, Sunday's outing likely put him as the front runner to man the role behind Sonny Gray and Pablo Lopez. Ryan now owns a 4.31 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 191:33 K:BB in 156.2 innings and lines up for one final start against the Rockies.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Lasts just four innings in loss

Ryan (10-9) took the loss Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk over four innings against Cleveland. He struck out three. The 27-year-old allowed only two runs on the afternoon but needed 89 pitches to get through four innings as the right-hander was replaced by Louie Varland to open the fifth. Ryan has now failed to make it through five frames in three of his last five starts, though he's allowed two or fewer runs in three straight. Ryan has also lost five of his last seven decisions (spanning 10 starts), surrendering at least four runs in five of those outings.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Fans seven in win

Ryan (10-8) allowed one run on three hits across six innings Friday, striking out seven and earning a win over Texas. Aside from Corey Seager's solo homer in the fourth inning, Ryan was nearly untouchable in Friday's victory. It was his first appearance without walking a batter since June 27 and the first time he completed six innings since July 26. Despite the strong outing, he threw a season-low 74 pitches, though he still managed to force 14 whiffs. Ryan lowered his season ERA to 4.20 with a 166:27 K:BB through 24 starts. He's currently lined up to start in Cleveland next week.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Sharp in return

Ryan (groin) allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over five innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Saturday. Ryan missed just over three weeks with a groin strain, but he looked solid in his return. He threw 51 of 80 pitches for strikes, suggesting he may not have much of a workload restriction, if any, going forward. He struggled prior to the injury, but he's at a passable 4.33 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 159:27 K:BB through 131 innings over 23 starts for the year. Ryan is projected for a rematch with the Rangers in Texas next week.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Activated ahead of start

Ryan (groin) was activated off the 15-day injured list Saturday ahead of his scheduled start against the Rangers. Ryan wound up missing most of the month of August while recovering from a groin strain, but he's ready to go after striking out seven and allowing just one run on one hit and a pair of walks in a four-inning rehab start last Sunday. Prior to the injury, Ryan struggled to an 8.63 ERA and 1.79 WHIP over his last seven starts, a far cry from the 2.98 ERA and 0.91 WHIP he managed across his first 15 outings. Jordan Balazovic was optioned to clear space for Ryan's return.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Confirmed for return Saturday

Ryan (groin) will return from the 15-day injured list to start Saturday versus the Rangers, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Ryan has been given the official go-ahead to rejoin the Twins' rotation after throwing 71 pitches and striking out seven batters over four innings of one-run ball in his lone minor-league rehab start last Friday with Triple-A St. Paul. The 27-year-old right-hander landed on the injured list Aug. 3 due to a left groin strain.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Likely to return Saturday

Ryan (groin) is likely to return from the 15-day injured list to start Saturday against the Rangers, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Ryan showed well in a minor-league rehab start last Friday with Triple-A St. Paul, tallying seven strikeouts while allowing only one hit -- a solo homer -- across four innings of work. He threw 71 pitches in that outing, so there shouldn't be too much of a limit on his workload as he returns to the fold for Minnesota. The 27-year-old right-hander has been on the IL since Aug. 3 because of a left groin strain.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Goes on IL with groin strain

Ryan was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a left groin strain, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. Ryan was excellent in the first half of the season, but he got hammered by the Cardinals on Wednesday night in St. Louis and has stumbled to an 8.63 ERA across his last seven starts covering 32.1 innings. He'll be sidelined through at least Aug. 18. Dallas Keuchel is joining the Twins in a corresponding roster move and will presumably slide into the rotation.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Hit hard by Seattle

Ryan (9-7) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks over 3.2 innings against Seattle. He struck out seven. It was a rough day for Ryan, but it could've been even worse, as he managed to still rack up seven strikeouts in only 3.2 innings. Ryan's struggled to a 7.58 ERA in four starts (19 innings) since the All-Star break, though he's struck out 34 in that span. The 27-year-old Ryan's ERA is now up to 4.06 with a 1.09 WHIP and 148:24 K:BB across 21 starts (122 innings) this season. He'll look to get back on track in his next outing, currently lined up for next week in St. Louis.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Fans seven in no-decision

Ryan did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks over 5.1 innings against the Athletics. He struck out seven. Ryan wasn't able to settle into a groove Sunday as he tied his season high with three walks issued. Since firing a shutout June 22, he's posted a 7.71 ERA in four outings. Dating back to May 30, he's gone 1-5 with a 5.61 ERA across nine starts. Ryan will carry a 3.77 ERA into his next appearance, which is currently slated to be at home against the White Sox.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Stumbles in short start

Ryan (8-6) allowed five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out 10 over 4.1 innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Orioles. Ryan gave up a solo home run to Austin Hays in the second inning and then was charged with four of the seven runs the Orioles put up in the fifth. Over his last six outings, Ryan has alternated between strong showing and poor performances. The 27-year-old right-hander finished the first half with a solid 3.70 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 124:18 K:BB over 107 innings through 18 starts. His first start after the All-Star break is likely to be on the road, either in Oakland or Seattle.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Fans nine in quality start

Ryan allowed two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out nine batters over six inning in a no-decision against Kansas City on Monday. Ryan bounced back nicely after serving up five homers and allowing six runs over three innings in his worst start of the campaign against Atlanta his last time out. The right-hander racked up 21 swinging strikes and nine punchouts against the Royals, finishing with his fourth quality start over his past six outings. Ryan has just one win during that stretch, but he's given the Twins' pitching staff a boost by completing at least six frames in each appearance aside from the dud against Atlanta. The 27-year-old is tentatively lined up to start Minnesota's final game before the All-Star break this weekend against Baltimore.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Stung by long ball in loss

Ryan (7-2) took the loss Tuesday against the Astros, allowing five runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six over four innings. Ryan gave up two homers in the second frame, amounting to three runs for the Astros, and then surrendered a pair of runs in the third. He went fewer than five innings for the first time all year and gave up more than two earned runs for the first time since April 19. His three walks allowed were also his worst mark on the season thus far. Coming into Tuesday, Ryan had allowed just four home runs this year and had gone six straight starts without giving up a long ball. It was a bit of an uncharacteristic night for the 27-year-old, though he still managed to generate 14 whiffs. He now holds a 2.77 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 76:13 K:BB across 65 innings and will look to get back on track in a projected home start against the Guardians over the weekend.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Turns in solid outing

Ryan did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk over six innings against the Angels. He struck out nine. Ryan now has 19 strikeouts and just two walks over his last two outings, and he's given up only four earned runs in his past four starts. The right-hander also ranks third in the league with a stingy 0.89 WHIP and is tied for second with six wins. The 26-year-old is tentatively slated to face the Giants at home in his next appearance.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Fans 10 in win over Cubs

Ryan (6-1) picked up the win in Saturday's 11-1 rout of the Cubs, scattering four hits and a walk over six scoreless innings. He struck out 10. The right-hander didn't let a runner get past second base and tied his season high in strikeouts in another dominant performance, generating 36 called or swinging strikes among his 102 pitches. Ryan has reeled off six straight quality starts and seven in eight outings to begin the season, and he'll take a 2.16 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 57:7 K:BB through 50 innings into his next start, likely to come on the road next weekend against the Angels.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Takes loss despite quality start

Ryan (5-1) took the loss Sunday, allowing two runs on eight hits over six innings during a 2-0 loss to Cleveland. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. Ryan surrendered three straight singles to start the game and escaped the opening frame with two runs allowed. After the rocky first, he scattered four hits across five scoreless innings but still suffered his first loss, as Cleveland's pitching staff combined for a one-hit shutout. Sunday's outing marked just the third time over seven starts that Ryan has allowed multiple earned runs, and his 47:6 K:BB through 44 innings remains elite. The right-hander will look to continue his stellar beginning to the campaign next time out, which is tentatively scheduled for a three-game weekend set versus the Cubs.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Shuts down Bronx Bombers in win

Ryan (3-0) earned the win Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and zero walks over seven innings against the Yankees. He struck out 10. Ryan pitched like a true ace in a hostile environment, as his only blemish on the night was giving up a solo homer to Anthony Rizzo. The former seventh-round draft pick has now recorded two straight starts with 10 strikeouts and has a 2.84 ERA and 26:3 K:BB in his first 19 innings of the season. He will look to continue his hot start to the season against the Red Sox next week.
