Player Outlook
In large part due to working with Dustin Pedroia in the spring, Jarren Duran displayed a positive change in attitude, not to mention a reworked swing. Even so, Duran opened the season with Triple-A Worcester before being called up in early April to add outfield depth following the wrist injury to Adam Duvall. Duran turned out to be more than depth as he became the regular center fielder, demonstrating much more hustle. Unfortunately, Duran was limited to only 102 games as he missed almost a quarter of the season after season-ending surgery on his left big toe. The league had begun to adjust, so the lost time makes it harder to evaluate the extent of Duran's break out. Through July 23, he batted .317/.367/.514, but afterwards, he posted a .219/.269/.370 line. Duran is expected to be ready for spring training and should be a regular in the outfield. There is no doubting his stolen base prowess, but his power and ability to get on base are unclear. He'll probably land closer to the early version, but don't expect a repeat of his pre-All-Star break production.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Starts in right field

Duran started in right field and went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, four RBI and an additional run scored in Friday's spring game against the Twins. Duran has made starts in left field (two), center field (five) and now right field. Tyler O'Neill was originally scheduled to start in right but was scratched with left calf tightness. Duran could move around the outfield a lot this year if Ceddanne Rafaela, who started in center field Friday, earns a roster spot.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Back in action

Duran (ankle) will start in center field and lead off in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta. As expected, Duran will return after a brief injury scare. He was seen flexing his left foot Tuesday -- the same foot he had surgery on last August -- but it seems he's already put the issue behind him. If healthy, Duran will serve as Boston's primary leadoff man against both righties and lefties.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Expected back Thursday

Duran is expected to be back in the Red Sox lineup Thursday after exiting Tuesday's game versus the Rays with left ankle tightness, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Before being removed, Duran was seen flexing the same foot he had surgically repaired, which set off alarms. However, it seems to be just a minor, unrelated ankle issue and he's expected to be fine. Duran is 1-for-6 with one stolen base so far during Grapefruit League play.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Steals bag Sunday

Duran started in center field and went 1-for-2 with a stolen base in Sunday's spring game against Toronto. Duran opened the bottom half of the first inning with a single, then easily stole second base four pitches into next at-bat. The outfielder wanted to test his speed after recovering from a left big-toe surgery last August. Boston manager Alex Cora has not yet designated Duran as the starter in center field, as highly regarded prospect Ceddanne Rafaela is still in the mix.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Plays four innings Friday

Duran started in left field and went 0-for-2 in Friday's spring game against Minnesota. Duran played four innings in his Grapefruit League debut, which was delayed as the club made sure he was 100 percent following surgery to his toe last August. The outfielder talked about his offseason focus, which in addition to recovery from surgery featured a plan to maximize his foot speed, per Ian Browne of MLB.com. "I'm just working on my legs and staying in a straight line, because everybody knows I run like a lizard," Duran said, referring to too much sideways movement. "So trying to make it more efficient the way I run, that will also help my toe with impact and stuff like that, but it's just gonna clean me up and make me hopefully faster." Duran swiped 24 bags (caught twice) over 102 games in 2023 before season-ending surgery.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Making spring debut Friday

Duran (toe) is starting in left field and batting leadoff in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Manager Alex Cora previously said the 27-year-old would serve as the DH in his spring debut, but he'll instead man left field. Duran had a delayed start to spring training while completing his recovery from August toe surgery, but he has plenty of time to ramp up his workload before Opening Day.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Will be Boston's leadoff hitter

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Friday that Duran will be the team's leadoff hitter this season, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Cora did add that there will be matchups to consider when mulling the leadoff decision, but Duran will be at the top of the order most days against both righties and lefties. The left-handed hitting Duran slashed .296/.349/.491 versus right-handers in 2023 and held his own against lefties with a .289/.327/.422 line, albeit with a 30.6 percent strikeout rate. Duran's 2023 season ended prematurely following surgery in late August to repair the flexor tendon in his left big toe, but he's not under any restrictions this spring. He is competing with Ceddanne Rafaela for the center field job but would presumably slide over to right field if Rafaela plays center.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Fully cleared for spring training

Duran (toe) will not face any limitations during spring training, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Duran had surgery in late August to repair the flexor tendon in his left big toe. His rehab has evidently gone off without a hitch, clearing the way for a normal spring. Duran slashed .295/.346/.482 with eight homers and 24 steals across 102 games in 2023 before getting injured and is slated to man center field on an everyday basis for the Red Sox in 2024.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Begins weight-bearing exercises

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said Wednesday that Duran (toe) has begun weight-bearing exercises, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Duran is more than two months removed from Aug. 30 surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his left big toe and should be fully recovered well before the beginning of spring training in February. The 27-year-old center fielder enjoyed a mini breakout with the Red Sox in 2023, slashing .295/.346/.482 with eight homers and 24 steals across 102 games.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Transferred to 60-day IL

Duran (toe) was transferred from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Monday, Chad Jennings of The Athletic reports. The transaction frees up a 40-man roster spot for waiver claim Logan Gillaspie. Duran had already been ruled out for the remainder of the season following surgery last week to repair a torn flexor tendon in his left big toe.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Officially lands on IL

Duran was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a left toe sprain, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. We already knew this move was likely, and now it's official. Adam Duvall should get the bulk of the starts in center field while Duran is sidelined, and prospect Wilyer Abreu, who was recalled in a corresponding move, could also get some work in the short term.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Headed for further imaging

Duran (toe) will have an MRI on Tuesday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. The Red Sox should know more about whether Duran will require a trip to the injured list after receiving the outfielder's MRI results. Adam Duvall would likely see regular playing time in center field if Duran is placed on the IL.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: IL stint not ruled out

Duran (toe) could still be placed on the injured list, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. There is reason for optimism regarding Duran's status, as there are no X-rays scheduled on his injured toe and he did not visit a doctor after his early exit from Sunday's game. However, he is not starting Monday, and manager Alex Cora said the team wants to see how Duran feels Tuesday before deciding on his next step.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Not starting Monday

Duran (toe) is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Astros, according to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic. The toe injury that forced Duran from Sunday's game is not believed to be a long-term issue, but it will prevent him from starting Monday's contest.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Dealing with toe injury

Duran was removed from Sunday's win over the Yankees with a left toe contusion, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Duran went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base before being lifted from Sunday's contest with the injury. It doesn't appear to be a serious issue, so the 26-year-old should be considered day-to-day until more information is available.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Slumping, dropped in order

Duran batted seventh and went 0-for-4 in Friday's 8-3 win over the Yankees. Duran has hit the skids of late, going 3-for-32 (.094) over the last 12 games. The slump appears to have cost him the leadoff role against right-handers, as Alex Verdugo led off for the third consecutive game against a righty starter. Red Sox manager Alex Cora told Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com that he's spoken with Duran, who recently posted two Instagram stories that seemed to reference recurring struggles. One of those stories was captioned "falling back into that place I fought so hard to get out of." Duran had looked like a different hitter in 2023 and rebounded every time he hit a slump, and he'll have to fight out of one once again.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Held out versus lefty

Duran is absent from the lineup for Thursday's tilt against the Nationals, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. The Red Sox have faced a slew of left-handers lately, including Thursday, which has resulted in Duran starting just two of the last six contests. Masataka Yoshida, Rob Refsnyder and Adam Duvall will be Boston's trio of starting outfielders against southpaw Patrick Corbin.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Sitting against lefty

Duran is not in the lineup Wednesday versus the Nationals. Adam Duvall will play center field and bat sixth as the Red Sox face off against left-hander MacKenzie Gore. Duran has enjoyed a breakout season in Boston, but he continues to sit versus most lefties.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Sitting versus lefty

Duran is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Royals, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. Duran will sit out the Red Sox's fourth straight matchup with a lefty (Cole Ragans). Rob Refsnyder will pick up the start in center field in place of Duran.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Belts eighth homer

Duran went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's 7-3 loss to the Blue Jays. The Red Sox had only six hits total on the night and Duran was one of the few bright spots for the club, with his third-inning shot off Alek Manoah supplying most of Boston's offense. The 26-year-old outfielder has gone yard in back-to-back games, extending his hitting streak to seven games in the process, and since the beginning of July he's slashing a dazzling .384/.424/.698 with four of his eight homers on the season, along with eight steals, 10 RBI and 22 runs in 26 contests.
