Jake McCarthy entered the 2023 season with plenty of fantasy buzz after finishing the previous year with a flourish. Unfortunately, he found himself back in the minors before the end of April following a slow start. He returned after a month on the farm and hit .311 with 15 stolen bases during a 31-game stretch, but that surge in production wound up being short-lived. McCarthy hardly played in the final two months of the season and was removed from the Diamondbacks' Wild Card Series roster due to an oblique injury. The 26-year-old has been an elite base stealer with 49 swipes since 2022 as a semi-regular. His quality of contact (23.7 percent hard-hit rate in 2023) has been woeful, though, and he hasn't graded out well defensively, so getting enough consistent playing time to take advantage of those wheels is a legitimate question. Arizona re-signed Lourdes Gurriel, which could push McCarthy to a reserve role.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Collects two hits in loss

McCarthy started in left field and went 2-for-4 in Wednesday's 5-1 loss to St. Louis. McCarthy slotted in for Lourdes Gurriel, who was rested for an afternoon tilt following a night game. McCarthy has been on a roll, hitting safely in seven of eight contests at 9-for-24 (.375) with three walks, two steals, three RBI and five runs. He'll continue to make three or four starts per week until Alek Thomas (hamstring) is ready to return. The injured outfielder has begun taking batting practice and is ready to run the bases, per Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Out against lefty

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs. The lefty-hitting McCarthy will retreat to the bench for the series finale with southpaw Jordan Wicks toeing the rubber for Chicago. Randal Grichuk will replace McCarthy in right field.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Swipes first bag of season

McCarthy went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 5-0 win over the Cardinals. McCarthy was involved in a five-run fifth inning for the Diamondbacks, doubling home Joc Pederson before eventually scoring on a base hit from Corbin Carroll. McCarthy wound up reaching on a two-out base knock the following frame and stole second before the inning concluded for his first theft of the year. The 26-year-old is known for his elite base stealing, so it was encouraging to finally see him active on the basepaths after tallying 49 steals in 198 games over the last two seasons. McCarthy is now slashing .276/.300/.379 with four RBI, four runs and a 1:9 BB:K in 30 plate appearances this year.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Sits versus lefty

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies. Arizona is facing a left-handed starting pitcher (Austin Gomber) for the sixth time in eight games, so the lefty-hitting McCarthy once again finds himself on the bench. McCarthy and the right-handed-hitting Randal Grichuk are expected to form a platoon in right field until Arizona gets Alek Thomas (hamstring) back from the injured list.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Held out of starting lineup

McCarthy served as a pinch hitter and went 0-for-1 in Sunday's 5-2 loss to Atlanta. McCarthy had started recently against left-handers, but he was held out Sunday against Atlanta's Chris Sale. That's because the righty-hitting Randal Grichuk was activated from the injured list Friday, and he'll get starts against lefties. Expect McCarthy and Grichuk to platoon in right field until Alek Thomas (hamstring) is ready to return. At that point, Grichuk will likely platoon with Thomas, squeezing McCarthy's playing time.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Two hits, two RBI in loss

McCarthy started in right field and went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 9-8 loss to Atlanta. McCarthy got the start against a lefty and delivered early with an RBI single in the first inning when the Diamondbacks plated six runs. He later delivered another run with a double. Now that Randal Grichuk is off the injured list, McCarthy's opportunities against left-handers may dry up. Grichuk made his season debut Saturday but served as the designated hitter in what was likely a soft re-entry before he gets work in the field. At some point, Alek Thomas (hamstring) will return, which will also cut into McCarthy's playing time.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Back in lineup Friday

McCarthy started in right field and went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Friday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to Atlanta. McCarthy returned to the lineup after sitting out Wednesday's game, as Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo gets by without center fielder Alek Thomas -- Corbin Carroll started in center Friday. McCarthy should see action against right-handers while Thomas is unavailable, but the recently activated Randall Grichuk will be in the mix as well, particularly against lefties.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Heads to bench Wednesday

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees. Though he went 2-for-4 in Tuesday's 7-0 win while southpaw Nestor Cortes was on the bump for the Yankees, the lefty-hitting McCarthy will retreat to the bench for the series finale while another southpaw (Carlos Rodon) takes the hill for New York. Jorge Barrosa will replace McCarthy in the outfield, but the latter is still expected to see steady playing time against right-handed pitching while Alek Thomas (hamstring) is on the injured list.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Starts in right field

McCarthy started in right field and went 2-for-4 in Tuesday's 7-0 win over the Yankees. McCarthy was also picked off/caught stealing in the sixth inning. It was the second consecutive start for McCarthy, as the Diamondbacks navigate an injury to Alek Thomas (hamstring). That the start came against a left-hander (Nestor Cortes) is notable, but Corbin Carroll getting his first night off of the season may have played a role in that decision. McCarthy and Jorge Barrosa, who started in center field Tuesday, are expected to get opportunities while Thomas is sidelined.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Scores run in loss

McCarthy started in right field and went 1-for-3 with a run scored in Monday's 5-2 loss to the Yankees. McCarthy entered the starting lineup for the injured Alek Thomas (hamstring) and scored on a Ketel Marte sacrifice fly. All three of McCarthy's plate appearances were against right-handers, and he was pinch-hit for by the switch-hitting Jorge Barrosa when southpaw Victor Gonzalez was throwing for New York. McCarthy and Barrosa could platoon while Thomas is sidelined.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Gets start Monday

McCarthy will start in right field and bat eighth in Monday's game versus the Yankees. Alek Thomas (hamstring) is banged up, so McCarthy will get his first start of the season while Corbin Carroll slides over to center. McCarthy went hitless in two plate appearances off the bench in place of Thomas in Sunday's 5-1 win over the Rockies.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: On updated projected roster

McCarthy was included on the updated projected roster compiled by Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. McCarthy was not part of Gilbert's initial projection, but Randal Grichuk's lingering ankle injury -- he hasn't played a game yet -- could impact his availability for Opening Day. McCarthy is 8-for-32 with two doubles, a triple, three RBI and two stolen bases over 12 Cactus League contests.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Not projected for roster

McCarthy was noticeably absent from the Diamondbacks' projected Opening Day roster from Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. McCarthy, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base Friday, has been a contributor the last two seasons. He stole 23 bases in 2022 then 26 last season. The 25-year-old outfielder now appears to be on the roster bubble. The offseason additions of Joc Pederson and Randal Grichuk (ankle), plus the re-signing of Lourdes Gurriel, makes it a crowded outfield. Arizona can also use Jace Peterson (wrist) as a depth outfielder in a pinch.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Removed from wild-card roster

McCarthy was removed from the Diamondbacks' roster ahead of their NL Wild Card Series matchup against Milwaukee on Tuesday due to an oblique injury, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. McCarthy suffered the injury during batting practice ahead of Game 1 and won't be eligible to return in the NLDS should the D-backs advance. Jace Peterson will join the active roster as McCarthy's replacement.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: On bench Wednesday

McCarthy is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers. McCarthy has gone 5-for-10 with three walks and three stolen bases over his last four games, but he carries a disappointing .255/.332/.334 slash line in 279 total plate appearances this year. Tommy Pham, Alek Thomas and Corbin Carroll will canvas the Arizona outfield Wednesday.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Steals two bases in loss

McCarthy went 2-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Twins. McCarthy registered a pair of steals, upping his season total to 25 in 81 games. That's two more than he had last season in 99 games. The steals were his first in nine games, as the outfielder was mired in a 3-for-20 slump during the previous eight contests.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Takes seat Sunday

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds. Though most of the lefty-hitting McCarthy's off days come against left-handed pitching, he'll head to the bench Sunday while a right-hander (Luke Weaver) toes the rubber for Cincinnati. Dominic Canzone will pick up his first career start in right field in place of McCarthy, who is slashing .292/.414/.333 with four runs, two RBI and two stolen bases in his first eight games out of the All-Star break.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Swipes two bags in win

McCarthy went 2-for-5 with a run and two stolen bases in a 5-3 victory versus Atlanta on Wednesday. McCarthy capitalized on both of his singles in the contest, swiping second base following each hit. It was the sixth time this season that the speedy outfielder has stolen multiple bags in a contest, and he's up to 22 thefts overall, tied for eighth in the majors. McCarthy spent about a month in the minors early in the season following a slow start to the campaign, but he's been outstanding since his return, slashing .306/.382/.410 with a home run, 10 RBI, 22 runs and 20 thefts in 21 attempts over 43 games.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Not in lineup Tuesday

McCarthy is absent from the lineup Tuesday at Atlanta. Lourdes Gurriel, Alek Thomas and Corbin Carroll will start across the outfield for the Diamondbacks as they face off against right-hander Bryce Elder. McCarthy is stuck in a 2-for-14 rut at the dish, though he has drawn five walks over that span.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Sitting Saturday

McCarthy isn't in Arizona's lineup Saturday against Pittsburgh. After walking twice, scoring twice and stealing two bases during Friday's win, McCarthy will get a breather Saturday. His absence moves Corbin Carroll into right field, Lourdes Gurriel into left and allows Dominic Canzone to make his MLB debut as Arizona's designated hitter.
