Jose Suarez showed plenty of flashes that suggested he can be an effective starter during the 2021 and 2022 campaigns while forging a 3.86 ERA and 188/69 K/BB over 207.1 innings during that time frame. Those flashes were miniscule in 2023 with an 8.29 ERA and 1.96 WHIP over 11 appearances -- seven of those starts -- and also dealing with a shoulder injury. The 26-year-old southpaw has a below-average fastball that rarely gets above 93 mph, and he wasn't able to command that pitch well as seen in a 12.1 percent walk rate along with an 11.2 percent barrel rate. He was able to get hitters to swing and miss at 28.5 percent of his offerings, so there was a smidgen of bad luck in his well below-average 17 percent strikeout mark. Suarez could make starts for the Angels in 2024, but his most likely role for Los Angeles will be a multi-inning relief that provides no fantasy help.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Overcomes dead arm phase

Suarez tossed two scoreless frames Monday versus the Rangers in his Cactus League debut after overcoming a dead arm phase, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Suarez has been behind other starters in Angels' camp while battling through dead arm issues, but it looks like he's over the hump. The left-hander currently appears on the outside looking in for a spot in the Halos' rotation, but he's out of options, so he could settle into a long relief role initially.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Loses arbitration case

Suarez will make $925,000 in 2024 after losing his arbitration case to the Angels on Friday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Suarez had an 8.29 ERA across 33.2 innings last season and was in his first year of arbitration eligibility. The 26-year-old lefty posted a 3.86 ERA in 45 appearances (34 starts) during the 2021-22 campaigns, and he'll likely need to get back to that form to have a chance of working out of the rotation regularly in 2024.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Opening Friday's contest

Suarez will serve as the Angels' opening pitcher for Friday's game against the Twins, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Suarez has given up two runs over 2.2 innings since returning from the injured list Sept. 11. He'll likely remain in the game for an inning or two before giving way to Davis Daniel, who is expected to work in bulk relief following his promotion from Triple-A Salt Lake.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Back from injured list

The Angels reinstated Suarez (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Monday. Suarez has been on the shelf since early May and was pulled off his minor-league rehab assignment in late July, but he's apparently made significant progress behind the scenes at the Angels' spring training facility in Arizona over the past month. Before straining his left shoulder in May, Suarez had been part of the Anaheim rotation, but due to his extended absence, he'll most likely be eased back into the mix in a relief role.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Shut down from rehab stint

Suarez's minor-league rehab assignment has been shut down due to left shoulder soreness, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Suarez recently kicked off the rehab stint and made two appearances for the Angels' ACL club, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out four batters over a combined 3.1 innings. However, he'll now take a step back due to the setback with his shoulder. Angels manager Phil Nevin indicated that the organization isn't concerned that Suarez will need to be held out for a long period, though it's not yet clear when the southpaw will begin throwing again.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Begins rehab assignment

Suarez (shoulder) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings for the Angels' Arizona Complex League team Tuesday, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out two batters. Suarez last pitched for the Angels on May 7, when he departed his start against Texas after 2.2 frames with left shoulder discomfort. He was moved to the 60-day IL on June 20 but recently began throwing to hitters before taking part in the ACL game Tuesday. Per MLB.com, Suarez will make another rehab start Sunday, this time with a full-season affiliate. It hasn't yet been decided whether the left-hander will work as a starter or a reliever upon his eventual return to the big club.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Shifted to 60-day IL

The Angels transferred Suarez (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday. Suarez has been on the injured list since May 8 with a left shoulder strain, and his recent transfer to the 60-day IL will keep him out for at least the first week of July. The move opens up a spot for Kevin Padlo to be selected from Triple-A Salt Lake and join the Angels' infield.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: No structural damage found in MRI

Suarez will be shut down for about a month with left shoulder inflammation, but his MRI revealed no structural damage, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Suarez left Sunday's start in the second inning after feeling soreness in his left shoulder, and the MRI revealed the inflammation after he was placed on the injured list Monday. The shutdown will cause him to miss the rest of May and the start of June, but the positive news is it doesn't appear he'll need surgery and should be an option for the Angels for the second half of the 2023 campaign at the very least.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Undergoing MRI on shoulder

Suarez will undergo an MRI on Monday after exiting Sunday's start against the Rangers with left shoulder discomfort, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Suarez first felt soreness in the second inning before finally being removed in the third when it didn't dissipate. A stint on the injured list for Suarez seems likely even if he gets favorable news from the MRI, especially since his spot in the Angels' rotation was already on thin ice. Chase Silseth went 3.1 innings in relief of Suarez on Sunday and would be an obvious candidate to replace him in the rotation.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Leaves with trainer

Suarez exited Sunday's start against the Rangers with an athletic trainer, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Suarez was charged with seven earned runs across 2.2 innings, but his removal is clearly injury related since the Angels didn't have any relievers warming up. It remains to be seen if the issue will affect his availability for the next turn through the rotation.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Five scoreless in first win

Suarez (1-1) earned the win during Sunday's 3-0 victory over Milwaukee, tossing five scoreless innings in which he allowed two hits and three walks. He struck out six. Suarez allowed seven runs, including five homers, his last time out, but he was given another shot in the rotation and came through with his best outing of the campaign. The left-hander's ERA dropped from 10.26 to 7.89, and his six strikeouts were a season high. Despite the solid bounce back, the 25-year-old is likely still on the hot seat and could be in danger of being demoted to the bullpen or Triple-A if he struggles in his next start.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Still in rotation

Angels manager Phil Nevin said Tuesday that Suarez will remain in the team's rotation on a start-by-start basis, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Suarez's start to the season has certainly been less than ideal -- he holds a 10.26 ERA and 2.28 WHIP through his first four starts. After allowing five homers and seven earned runs against Oakland on Monday, his leash has now been tightened even further. Nevin said he liked what he saw from Suarez after making some adjustments in the fourth inning Monday, so the 25-year-old lefty will keep his spot in the rotation for now. However, one more subpar performance might result in him being demoted to the bullpen or even Triple-A Salt Lake.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Yields five homers

Suarez allowed seven runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings during Monday's loss to Oakland. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. Suarez was cursed by the long ball Monday, coughing up five home runs in the ugly start. He served up back-to-back shots to Brent Rooker and Jesus Aguilar in both the first and third innings. Suarez was in line for the loss before the Angels' bats got hot late and forced an extra inning. He's struggled out of the gate this season, posting an ugly 10.26 ERA and 12:9 K:BB through four outings. At this point, it's unclear if he'll get another shot in the rotation.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Will remain in rotation

Angels manager Phil Nevin told reporters before Wednesday's game against the Yankees that Suarez will remain in the rotation, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Suarez has really struggled in his appearances thus far for the Angels with a 9.26 ERA over 11.2 innings while allowing 21 hits. The Angels will allow him to make at least one more start -- Suarez is scheduled to face off against the Athletics next week -- but another disappointing effort could lead to a change in the rotation.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Gives up four runs in no-decision

Suarez did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing four runs on 10 hits and one walk over four innings during a 6-4 loss to the Nationals. He struck out two. Suarez was given early run support, but he wasn't able to hold onto the lead and was tagged for three runs in the fourth, which tied the game at 4-4. The left-hander is coming off back-to-back sub-4.00 ERA seasons, but he's struggled to start the 2023 campaign, allowing 11 runs on 18 hits over his two starts (8.1 innings).

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Roughed up in season debut

Suarez (0-1) was handed the loss after giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks as the Angels fell to the Mariners, 11-2, on Tuesday. He struck out four over the 77-pitch outing. The 25-year-old lefty was able to break camp as the Halos' No. 5 starter, but after a strong close to the 2022 campaign, he wasn't able to get off on the right foot in his 2023 season debut. He faced five batters and needed 31 pitches to record three outs in the opening frame, though he limited the damage to just one run, which came on a wild pitch. Suarez appeared to right the ship with a pair of 1-2-3 innings, but he unraveled in the fourth, surrendering three straight hits, including a Teoscar Hernandez home run. He served up another home run to Hernandez the following inning before being pulled from the contest a batter later.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Expected to be No. 5 starter

Suarez is lined up to start the Angels' fifth game of the season, which will take place April 4 in Seattle, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Suarez was essentially a lock for a starting role coming into spring training after posting a 3.96 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 22 games (20 starts last season). He has been fine in three Cactus League starts, allowing five runs (four earned) and posting a 6:3 K:BB over 8.2 innings. Suarez doesn't have the strikeout numbers or history of consistency to be an exciting option in fantasy, but he can give managers in deeper leagues decent ratios at a reasonable cost.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Strong start in last outing

Suarez (8-8) earned the win Saturday over the Rangers, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out six over seven innings. Suarez flirted with perfection in this one, throwing six clean innings before he was tagged for a two-run home run by Nathaniel Lowe in the seventh. That blast briefly put the Rangers ahead, but the Angels regained the lead to allow Suarez to be rewarded with the win, leveling his record in his last start of the year. The southpaw has had some solid moments over the second half of the campaign, giving up more than three runs just once in his last 11 outings. He'll finish the season with a 3.96 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 103:33 K:BB across 109 innings over 22 appearances (20 starts). The strong second-half performance should give Suarez an inside track to a rotation spot to begin 2023.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Earns seventh win

Suarez (7-8) allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out six in 5.2 innings to earn the win over the Twins on Sunday. Although Suarez fell one out shy of picking up a quality start Sunday, he was rewarded with his seventh win of the year after settling for losses in his last two outings. The southpaw has lasted at least five innings in all 10 of his starts following the All-Star break, and he's posted a 2.84 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 57 innings during that time. He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Rangers on Sunday.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Coughs up five runs

Suarez (6-8) allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings Monday, striking out four and taking a loss against Seattle. After giving up an RBI double to Ty France in the first inning, Suarez kept things under control until Carlos Santana smoked a grand slam in the fifth. The 24-year-old southpaw had allowed three or fewer runs in eight straight outings prior to Monday's hiccup. His season ERA jumped to 4.11 alongside a 91:32 K:BB through 20 appearances. Suarez is expected to start in Minnesota this weekend.
