Zac Gallen had a fantastic season and received some deserved votes for the Cy Young Award as he helped carry the Diamondbacks to their improbable World Series run. Most of his performance indicators were right in line with 2022 but better run support helped raise his wins while a near full-run jump in his ERA can be excused by the BABIP regression which we expected would come after his rather fortunate .237 BABIP in 2022. Simply put, there is not a performance issue to be concerned with as much as a workload concern. Gallen ended up throwing 243.2 innings in 2023, which was almost exactly double what he threw just two seasons ago. He managed a 52% increase in workload just fine from 2021 to 2022, but now we add another 32% increase in workload along with the stress of working in the postseason for the first time and we cannot help but wonder about the impact of that for 2024. 2023 was an excellent season, but it would not surprise us to see Gallen take a step back this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Blanks Cardinals in win

Gallen (3-0) threw six shutout innings in a win over the Cardinals on Sunday, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out seven. Gallen continued his excellent start to the season with his second scoreless outing in his last three starts. The Cardinals were able to scatter four hits against him and their only threat came in the second with bases loaded and one out, but Gallen was able to escape without any harm by striking out Brandon Crawford and getting Mike Siani to ground out. Five of his seven strikeouts came from his knuckle curve, as he registered 11 whiffs on the afternoon. He's allowed one run or fewer in three-of-four starts so far and boasts an excellent 1.64 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 26:7 K:BB in 22 innings. He'll look to keep things rolling his next time out on the road against the Giants.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Mostly fastball-curveball in loss

Gallen threw a career-high-tying 40 curveballs in Monday's loss to Colorado, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Gallen ran counter to what starters normally do in Coors Field; pitchers tend to stay away from breaking stuff because the altitude limits the break. "Just knowing what I've done here and how I've had success, it seems that my curveball tends to play up a little bit here," Gallen said. "I just felt like I was getting some pretty good responses from the hitter so we just kind of stuck with that. [Coors is] a place where I try not to get beat with my third and fourth pitches." Gallen was heavy on the four-seamer and curve, throwing 87 of them among his 108 pitches, and fanned a season-high 10 batters in a no-decision.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Fans 10 in no-decision

Gallen did not factor in the decision Monday after punching out 10 batters. He allowed three runs on eight hits during the loss to Colorado. Gallen coughed up a run in the first frame and another pair in the fourth. The 28-year-old righty struck out more batters Monday (10) than he had in his first 11 innings this season. However, he'd only given up one run during those 11 frames. Gallen forced 15 whiffs Monday, including 12 with the knuckle curve. He's currently lined up to face the Cardinals at home this weekend.

The 28-year-old Gallen's allowed just one run through 11 innings to start the year after going 17-9 with a 3.47 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 220:47 K:BB across 34 starts in 2023. Gallen will look to keep rolling in his next outing, tentatively lined up for early next week in Colorado.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Cruises to Opening Day victory

Gallen (1-0) earned the win over Colorado on Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three batters over five innings. Gallen notched just three punchouts in the win, though he did rack up a healthy 15 swinging strikes. He didn't face much stress in the outing, as Arizona put up 14 runs in the third frame to turn the contest into a laugher. The right-hander posted a career-high 17 wins last season for a Diamondbacks team that surprised by reaching the World Series, and he remains the team's ace despite the recent signing of Jordan Montgomery. If history is any indication, Gallen should see his strikeout numbers trend up as the season rolls along -- he's never posted a K/9 below 9.4 in any of his five MLB campaigns.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Works on fastball, curve

Gallen allowed two runs on five hits and one walk over 2.2 innings in Tuesday's spring start against San Diego. Gallen, who made his second Cactus League start, didn't get the results he wanted, but the right-hander told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com that he was he was more focused on fine-tuning his fastball and curveball. All but four of his 45 pitches consisted of one of those two offerings. In two spring starts, Gallen has allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two over 4.2 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Makes first start

Gallen allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two over two innings in Thursday's spring start against Texas. Gallen made his Cactus League debut and met trouble immediately, giving up a single and walk to the first two batters, who eventually came around to score with the aide of a wild pitch. He's prepared on the back fields instead of engaging in games; the Diamondbacks opted to ease Gallen into competition after the right-hander threw a career-high 243.2 innings in 2023. Gallen's lined up for three more spring appearances before an expected start Opening Day against Colorado in Phoenix on March 28.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Faces batters Sunday

Gallen tossed a live batting-practice session Sunday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. This was the first time facing batters this spring for Gallen, who is prepping for his scheduled Cactus League debut Friday. "I felt all right," the right-hander said. "I mean, I still feel a little rushed, but that's just a timing thing. I think that just comes with time of getting used to seeing hitters again." Gallen, who threw a career-high 243.2 innings combined between the regular season and playoffs in 2023, is being brought along slowly this spring but should be Arizona's Opening Day starter.

Gallen (17-9) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out seven over 6.1 innings to take the loss Friday versus the Astros. The right-hander had a shaky September, allowing 18 runs (17 earned) over 36.2 innings while going 3-3 in his starts for the month. Overall, he ends the regular season with a 3.47 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 220:47 K:BB through 210 innings over 34 starts. He's projected for a favorable road start versus the White Sox early next week.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Mauled by Mets

Gallen (15-8) took the loss against the Mets on Wednesday, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out four batters over five innings. Gallen clearly didn't have his best stuff against New York, as he served up four extra-base hits, including a two-run homer to Mark Vientos. The Arizona ace tossed a shutout against the Cubs in his previous trip to the mound but has been struggling as a whole of late -- Wednesday's outing was his third over his past four starts in which he's given up at least five earned runs. Gallen's sudden inability to miss bats has played a factor in the poor stretch, as in each of the aforementioned three starts he's struck out four or fewer batters. The recent rough patch has pushed his season ERA up to 3.50, nearly a run higher than the 2.54 mark he posted last year.

Gallen limited the damage to a Mitch Garver solo home run in the sixth inning. While he's been good virtually all year, Gallen has been especially sharp by allowing just two runs and generating a 22:3 K:BB across the 18.1 innings covering his last three starts. The right-hander is at a 3.11 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 179:34 K:BB through 168 innings over 27 starts this season. He's projected for a road outing versus the Dodgers next week.

He's at a 3.41 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 149:29 K:BB through 142.2 innings over 23 starts this season. The right-hander is lined up for a weekend road start in Minnesota.
