• Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Blanks Cardinals in win

  Gallen (3-0) threw six shutout innings in a win over the Cardinals on Sunday, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out seven. Gallen continued his excellent start to the season with his second scoreless outing in his last three starts. The Cardinals were able to scatter four hits against him and their only threat came in the second with bases loaded and one out, but Gallen was able to escape without any harm by striking out Brandon Crawford and getting Mike Siani to ground out. Five of his seven strikeouts came from his knuckle curve, as he registered 11 whiffs on the afternoon. He's allowed one run or fewer in three-of-four starts so far and boasts an excellent 1.64 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 26:7 K:BB in 22 innings. He'll look to keep things rolling his next time out on the road against the Giants.

• Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Mostly fastball-curveball in loss

  Gallen threw a career-high-tying 40 curveballs in Monday's loss to Colorado, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Gallen ran counter to what starters normally do in Coors Field; pitchers tend to stay away from breaking stuff because the altitude limits the break. "Just knowing what I've done here and how I've had success, it seems that my curveball tends to play up a little bit here," Gallen said. "I just felt like I was getting some pretty good responses from the hitter so we just kind of stuck with that. [Coors is] a place where I try not to get beat with my third and fourth pitches." Gallen was heavy on the four-seamer and curve, throwing 87 of them among his 108 pitches, and fanned a season-high 10 batters in a no-decision.

Gallen coughed up a run in the first frame and another pair in the fourth. The 28-year-old righty struck out more batters Monday (10) than he had in his first 11 innings this season. However, he'd only given up one run during those 11 frames. Gallen forced 15 whiffs Monday, including 12 with the knuckle curve. He's currently lined up to face the Cardinals at home this weekend.

The 28-year-old Gallen's allowed just one run through 11 innings to start the year after going 17-9 with a 3.47 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 220:47 K:BB across 34 starts in 2023. Gallen notched just three punchouts in the win, though he did rack up a healthy 15 swinging strikes. He didn't face much stress in the outing, as Arizona put up 14 runs in the third frame to turn the contest into a laugher. The right-hander posted a career-high 17 wins last season for a Diamondbacks team that surprised by reaching the World Series, and he remains the team's ace despite the recent signing of Jordan Montgomery. If history is any indication, Gallen should see his strikeout numbers trend up as the season rolls along -- he's never posted a K/9 below 9.4 in any of his five MLB campaigns.

In addition to the increase in innings last season, Gallen experienced jumps in average exit velocity (91.5 mph, third percentile) and hard-hit percentage (46.2, fifth).

The Arizona ace tossed a shutout against the Cubs in his previous trip to the mound but has been struggling as a whole of late -- Wednesday's outing was his third over his past four starts in which he's given up at least five earned runs. Gallen's sudden inability to miss bats has played a factor in the poor stretch, as in each of the aforementioned three starts he's struck out four or fewer batters. The recent rough patch has pushed his season ERA up to 3.50, nearly a run higher than the 2.54 mark he posted last year.
