Gabriel Arias received a taste of the majors in 2022 and followed up with his first extended look last season, and he finished with a .210/.275/.352 slash line, 10 homers, 26 RBI and 36 runs in 122 games. His swing-and-miss issues in the minors unsurprisingly followed him to the big leagues, as he struck out at a 32.8 percent clip. He provides strong and versatile defense and saw action at all four infield positions in addition to right field, with most of his action coming between shortstop and first base. Arias is likely to stick on Cleveland's Opening Day roster in 2024, but he'll likely need to flash more offensively in order to have more than a utility role.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Rewarded with fifth straight start

Arias will start in center field and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Red Sox. After making just four starts in the Guardians' first 13 games, Arias now finds himself in the lineup for a fifth straight contest. Though he doesn't have a direct path to a starting role at any one spot while the Guardians are seemingly committed to Brayan Rocchio as their primary shortstop, Arias has made it tough for manager Stephen Vogt to take him out of the lineup while he's wielding a hot bat. Over his last four games, Arias has gone 8-for-16 with five extra-base hits (three doubles, one triple and one home run) and one walk.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Homer shy of cycle

Arias went 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, one RBI and one run scored in Monday's 6-0 win over the Red Sox. Arias came up a home run short of a cycle, but it was still another excellent game for the utility man. He's gone 6-for-10 over his last three contests, with four of those hits going for extra bases. Monday's strong performance lifted his batting average to .308, and he's added a stolen base, five RBI and five runs scored through 27 plate appearances. Arias doesn't have a path to everyday at-bats yet, but he's putting the pressure on Brayan Rocchio, as shortstop has been the weak spot in the Guardians' infield so far.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Homers in Sunday's win

Arias went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and two total runs scored in Sunday's 8-7 extra-inning win over the Yankees. Arias' playing time has been limited this season as he serves in a utility role off the bench. He got a start at shortstop Sunday and delivered with his first homer and second extra-base hit of the season. The 24-year-old also made defensive shifts to first base and right field during the contest. He's hitting just .227 with four RBI, four runs scored and a stolen base over 23 plate appearances. With Brayan Rocchio batting .217 so far, there could be a chance for Arias to avenge his position battle loss from spring training as the regular season progresses.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Produces in first start

Arias went 2-for-5 with two RBI, two runs and a stolen base during Saturday's 12-3 win against the A's. The 24-year-old made his first start of the season Saturday and took advantage of the opportunity with a multi-hit game, which he did just 15 times in 88 starts last season. Arias is working in a utility role to begin 2024 after Brayan Rocchio won the starting shortstop job during spring training.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Set for utility role

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt announced Friday that Brayan Rocchio will begin the season as the club's primary shortstop, pushing Arias into a utility role, Tom Withers of the Associated Pressreports. Arias had a chance to win the shortstop job but posted a .623 OPS across 37 plate appearances during spring training. The 24-year-old will still make the roster as a utility option, but he likely won't see enough playing time to be relevant in most fantasy formats.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Rejoins lineup

Arias (illness) is starting at shortstop and batting fifth in Friday's Cactus League game against the Royals. Arias hasn't seen the field since last weekend due to an illness, but he's back in action for Friday's spring contest. The 24-year-old appears poised to begin the season as Cleveland's primary shortstop, though his .210/.275/.352 slash line and 32.8 percent strikeout rate likely won't bring much job security.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Scratched with illness

Arias was scratched from Sunday's Cactus League lineup versus the Reds due to an illness, Mandy Bell of MLB.comreports. Arias is feeling under the weather and won't play as scheduled Sunday, but he should be back in action soon. The 24-year-old had a .627 OPS in 122 games last season and could being 2024 as Cleveland's primary shortstop, though he's not likely to have much security in that role.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Batting cleanup Sunday

Arias (wrist) will bat in the cleanup spot for Sunday's spring training game against the Mariners. Arias' 2023 season came to an abrupt end after he sustained a fractured right wrist in late September. He finished last season batting .210/.275/.352 with 10 home runs and 26 RBI over 345 plate appearances.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Suffers fractured wrist

Cleveland placed Arias on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a fractured right wrist. Arias suffered the injury in the fourth inning of Tuesday's loss to the Reds and will finish the 2023 campaign with a .210/.275/.352 slash line, 10 homers, 26 RBI, three steals and 36 runs in 122 major-league games. Brayan Rocchio has been summoned from Triple-A Columbus to help out at shortstop.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Out of Sunday's lineup

Arias is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles. Arias is hitting .167 with a 34.1 percent strikeout rate over his past 11 games and will take a seat for Sunday's series finale. Jose Tena will start at shortstop and bat ninth.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: On bench Wednesday

Arias is out of the lineup Wednesday versus the Royals. Arias will be on the bench for the third time in seven games. Prior to that span, the 23-year-old had appeared in 13 consecutive games. Jose Tena will start in his place at shortstop and bat eighth.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Sitting Saturday

Arias is not in Saturday's lineup against the Rangers. Arias appears to be receiving a routine day of rest, though he's now sat out two of the team's last five games. Jose Tena will take over at shortstop and hit ninth.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Nabs steal in win

Arias went 2-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 12-3 win over the Rangers. Arias has picked up steady playing time in September, but he's batting just .231 (12-for-52) over 13 games this month. Most of his playing time is coming at shortstop, and it's a positive sign he's sticking in the lineup when the Guardians are at virtually full health. The infielder is essentially learning on the job, given his .213/.282/.354 slash line with nine home runs, three steals, 21 RBI and 34 runs scored through 115 contests overall.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Two-run blast in win

Arias went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and two runs scored in Saturday's 7-6 victory over the Rays. Arias singled in his first at-bat before adding a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to put the Guardians up 4-1. He's now racked up multiple hits in back-to-back games and in four of his last eight, adding five RBI over that latter stretch to go along with nine runs scored. On the downside, the utility man has also struck out 12 times over his last nine games while drawing only one walk.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Gets Sunday off

Arias is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Blue Jays. Arias will get a much-needed breather after he started in each of Cleveland's last 13 games, seeing action at all the infield spots except second base during that stretch. Tyler Freeman will get the nod at shortstop Sunday, but Arias is expected to operate as the primary option at the position in the wake of Brayan Rocchio's recent demotion to Triple-A Columbus.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Clubs seventh homer

Arias went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 7-2 loss to the Reds. Arias' fifth-inning blast cut the Guardians' deficit to three runs, but they didn't score again. Arias has just six hits over 12 games in August, but three of those knocks have gone over the fence. He's slashing .199/.286/.342 with seven homers, a stolen base, 13 RBI and 20 runs scored through 220 plate appearances. The 23-year-old has seen time at first base, shortstop and third base in the last week, filling a utility role while still being a part of the regular lineup most of the time.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Homers in Sunday's loss

Arias went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the White Sox. Arias has gone 10-for-33 (.303) over his last nine games, but the arrival of Brayan Rocchio has created some competition for playing time at shortstop. There will likely be a short-term solution when Jose Ramirez serves his suspension for a fistfight with Tim Anderson on Saturday, but Arias could ultimately find himself on the short side of a platoon in the long run. Arias is slashing .202/.296/.329 with five homers, 10 RBI, 18 runs scored and a stolen base over 196 plate appearances.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Takes seat Friday

Arias is not in the lineup Friday versus the White Sox. Brayan Rocchio will start at shortstop and bat seventh for Cleveland. Arias has picked it up offensively in recent weeks, but the 23-year-old is slashing just .206/.303/.321 across 80 total major-league games this season.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Emerges as primary shortstop

Arias will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the White Sox, Andre Knott of Bally Sports Ohio reports. In the wake of Amed Rosario getting dealt to the Dodgers on Wednesday, Arias has seemingly stepped in as the Guardians' preferred option at shortstop. He's now started in four of the five games since the Rosario trade, with Tyler Freeman getting the nod at shortstop in the other contest. Arias has gone 4-for-10 with a double, a walk and a stolen base over his prior three starts and should continue to sit atop the depth chart while he's turning in productive at-bats.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Two hits, steal in win

Arias went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in Wednesday's 8-3 win over Kansas City. Making his first start since July 21, Arias tallied a pair of hits, snapping an 0-for-20 stretch that dated back to June 21, while logging his first stolen base of the year. The 23-year-old Arias is now slashing just .188/.295/.306 with four homers, 15 runs scored and six RBI across 166 plate appearances this season. While Arias hasn't provided much offensively, he should see an uptick in playing time following Amed Rosario's trade to the Dodgers.
