Player Outlook
DL Hall's average fastball velocity at Triple-A Norfolk was 93.5 mph early last season, down from the 96.2 mph average he flashed in the majors in 2022. His decreased velocity may have been due in part to lower-back discomfort that lingered from the offseason into spring training. Given Hall's lack of a normal buildup, the Orioles eventually sent him to Florida for strength training. Once he built up his arm strength, he worked out of the Triple-A bullpen before he was summoned to the majors in late August. From that point on, he compiled a 2.76 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB over 16.1 innings out of Baltimore's bullpen. The 25-year-old's future is likely in relief due to his shaky control -- he walked 34 across 55 minor-league innings last year -- but he will presumably get a chance to compete for a spot in Milwaukee's rotation after being acquired by the Brewers in the Corbin Burnes trade.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Bailed out by offense

Hall escaped with a no-decision in Saturday's 11-5 win over the Orioles, coughing up five runs on eight hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over 3.1 innings. He struck out four. Facing his former team for the first time after being part of the package sent to Milwaukee this offseason for Corbin Burnes, Hall looked more like a sleeper agent as he served up homers to Ryan Mountcastle and Jordan Westburg in the first inning and Adley Rutschman in the third. However, the Brewers' offense kept pace and took the lead for good in the top of the fourth. Hall has had a bumpy conversion to the rotation so far after 28 of his 29 appearances with the O's came out of the bullpen, and through three starts he's stumbled to a 7.11 ERA, 2.13 WHIP and 10:5 K:BB in 12.2 innings. The 25-year-old southpaw lines up to make his next start on the road next weekend in St. Louis.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Allows three runs in loss

Hall (0-1) took the loss Saturday against the Mariners after he allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out five. Hall pitched well for the most part Saturday, but Seattle struck for three runs on five hits during the third frame. The left-hander got his pitch count up to 90 after throwing just 73 pitches over four innings during his Brewers debut, so it appears he'll have a standard starter's workload going forward. Hall tentatively projects to face his old team next weekend in Baltimore.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Gets early hook in first start

Hall didn't factor into the decision Saturday, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk over four innings in a 7-6 win over the Mets. He struck out one. Making only his second career big-league start, Hall tossed 45 of 73 pitches for strikes before exiting with the Brewers ahead 5-2, as he fell short of qualifying for the win. The 25-year-old southpaw is being counted on by Milwaukee to fill a rotation spot after being part of the package the team received from Baltimore for Corbin Burnes, but he has a lot to prove before he can be considered a reliable fantasy option. Hall lines up to make his next start at home next weekend against the Mariners.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Makes first spring start

Hall started Friday's Cactus League contest and gave up two earned runs over two innings while allowing five hits and posting a 3:1 K:BB. Hall was not as sharp as he was in his two-inning spring debut Sunday in which he did not allow a hit, but he did minimize the damage to some degree. The Brewers have not yet decided which pitchers will break camp in the rotation, but with Hall going two innings in both appearances to date and throwing 42 pitches Friday, it appears he is getting the opportunity to claim one of the open starting spots.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Heading to Milwaukee

Hall was traded from the Orioles to the Brewers along with Joey Ortiz and the 34th pick in the 2024 MLB Draft in exchange for Corbin Burnes on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Hall was once viewed as a top prospect as a starting pitcher, though he's made only one start in 29 appearances in the majors. He was effective as a reliever in 2023, posting a 3.26 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 19.1 innings for Baltimore after a disrupted offseason caused him to begin the year at less than full strength, though he also covered 49 frames in the minors. However, Hall should have a renewed chance to join a big-league rotation with Milwaukee, and he will likely compete for the role in spring training with the likes of Colin Rea and Joe Ross.

  • Orioles' DL Hall: Still viewed as long-term starter

Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Thursday that the team still views Hall as a starter long term, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. Elias did add, however, that it's possible Hall breaks camp as a reliever, depending on how things shake out in spring training. The plan is to get Hall stretched back out after he spent much of 2023 in a relief role, but it hasn't been determined whether that will happen right away or throughout the course of the upcoming season. All 18 of the southpaw's appearances with Baltimore last season came in relief and he was excellent, posting a 3.26 ERA and 23:5 K:BB over 19.1 innings. Hall, 25, has still yet to reach 100 frames in any of his six professional seasons.

  • Orioles' DL Hall: Picks up third win

Hall (3-0) allowed an unearned run and struck out one over two-thirds of an inning to earn the win Tuesday over the Astros. Hall put a runner on base due to an error by Adam Frazier in the sixth inning, and that runner came around to score after Jorge Lopez allowed a home run. Over nine appearances in September, Hall has allowed six runs (five earned) over 7.1 innings. The southpaw has a 4.61 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 17:5 K:BB through 13.2 innings this season.

  • Orioles' DL Hall: Earns second win

Hall (2-0) pitched a perfect inning to earn the extra-innings win over the Rays on Sunday. A groundout allowed the initial runner in the 11th inning to reach third base, but Hall didn't let anyone aboard. The Orioles then walked it off with a Cedric Mullins sacrifice fly in their half of the frame. Hall allowed three runs and failed to record an out Friday versus the Rays, but he's kept runs off the board in four of his last five appearances. He's at a 4.85 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB through 13 innings this season.

  • Orioles' DL Hall: Recalled by Orioles

Hall was recalled by the Orioles on Saturday, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. The 24-year-old lefty has struggled to a 5.94 ERA in 16.2 career MLB innings despite a 32.9 percent strikeout rate. He recorded a 4.57 ERA in 11 Triple-A starts at the beginning of this season before the Orioles elected to back him off and rebuild his arm strength at the team's spring training complex, as his velocity was down nearly three ticks. He's since returned to strike out 18 batters in 7.2 innings of relief and could be a weapon out of the bullpen down the stretch in Baltimore. A corresponding move has yet to be announced.

  • Orioles' DL Hall: Joining Triple-A bullpen

Hall, who was building up arm strength at the Orioles' spring training facility in Florida, is back with Triple-A Norfolk and will work out of the bullpen initially, Danielle Allentuck of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. There isn't enough time for Hall to get stretched out and become a viable option in the big-league rotation, so it makes sense for Baltimore to get Hall some relief work, as that could be his role for the big club down the stretch and in the postseason. Hall has immense long-term strikeout upside as a starter or as a reliever, as there are few lefties in baseball with his combination of fastball velocity and depth of repertoire -- at times he will show multiple plus offspeed pitches. However, injuries and poor control continue to linger as part of his profile, which is why some evaluators believe he fits best as a reliever long term.

  • Orioles' DL Hall: Strength training in Florida

Hall has been at the Orioles' spring training facility in Florida for the past four weeks in an effort to regain strength and velocity, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner reports. Hall's average fastball velocity at Triple-A was 93.5 mph, down from the 96.2 mph average fastball he showed in the majors last year. He dealt with lower-back discomfort this past winter, which prevented him from lifting weights like he normally does in the offseason, and the back issue lingered into spring training, so he never really had a normal buildup prior to pitching in real games. Hall built up to 98 total innings in 2022 and is sitting at 44.1 innings this season, so he is running out of time to approach the 100-inning mark. The 24-year-old southpaw came into the year with bullpen risk due to his shaky control, and this season's arm-strength-related setback makes a future in the bullpen seem even more likely.

  • Orioles' DL Hall: Heads back to Triple-A

The Orioles returned Hall to Triple-A Norfolk following Saturday's doubleheader with the Tigers, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports. Hall was up with the big club for just one day after being designated as the 27th man for the doubleheader. The left-hander came on in relief in the Orioles' 7-4 loss in the early game, giving up two runs on five hits over three innings while striking out seven against one walk. Hall will likely be back at some point for Baltimore in the coming weeks.

  • Orioles' DL Hall: Up as 27th man Saturday

Hall was called up to serve as the 27th man for the Orioles in Saturday's doubleheader against the Tigers, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. Hall will give the O's an extra arm in long relief as they navigate through the twin bill in Detroit. The highly-touted 24-year-old lefty has posted a 4.41 ERA and 20:9 K:BB in 16.1 innings (four starts) this season at Triple-A Norfolk.

  • Orioles' DL Hall: Bound for Triple-A

The Orioles optioned Hall to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports. Hall is healthy again after he overcame a lower-back injury to make two extended Grapefruit League relief appearances Monday and Saturday, but the Orioles want him to continue building up as a starter in the minors before a return to the majors is considered. Assuming he stays healthy and productive at Norfolk in the early part of the season, Hall should be among the top candidates for a promotion if a spot in the big-league rotation opens up at any point.

  • Orioles' DL Hall: Bullpen a possibility

Hall (back) being used as a reliever at the start of the season was not ruled out by Orioles manager Brandon Hyde on Monday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. The plan prior to Hall suffering a back injury had been to stretch the left-hander out as a starter. That could still happen at Triple-A Norfolk, but now keeping him in the majors as a member of the bullpen is also being considered. Hall made his Grapefruit League debut Monday against the Phillies, striking out four but allowing three runs -- one earned -- over 1.2 innings of work.

  • Orioles' DL Hall: Cleared for spring debut

Hall (back) is scheduled to appear in relief of starter Kyle Bradish in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. The upcoming appearance will mark Hall's first of the spring after he had been building up slowly during camp while he's worked to move past discomfort in the lower right side of his back. He'll likely work only an inning or two Monday but is still expected to be stretched out as starter, even though he won't be a candidate to break camp as a member of the Opening Day rotation. The Orioles are likely to place Hall on the injured list in the coming days, but he'll still be able to continue his buildup program at the team's spring facility in Florida before eventually heading out on a rehab assignment once the minor-league season begins in early April.

  • Orioles' DL Hall: Throwing simulated game

Hall (back) is throwing a two-inning simulated game Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Hall is probably not going to be an option for the Orioles at the beginning of the 2023 regular season as he recovers from a lower-back injury, but he continues to work through his rehab program without issue. The 24-year-old left-hander could make his Grapefruit League debut sometime next week and will get stretched out from there.

  • Orioles' DL Hall: Nearing live throwing

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Hall (back) threw a bullpen session Wednesday and is set to throw live batting practice in the upcoming days, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. Hall won't be an option for Opening Day while he remains behind the Orioles' other pitchers in his throwing progression due to the lower-back injury, but the fact that he's been cleared for mound work with a couple weeks left to go in spring training suggests he shouldn't be headed for an extensive absence to begin the season. The Orioles are still looking to develop the 24-year-old lefty as a starter, so he'll presumably join the Triple-A Norfolk rotation whenever he's deemed to be healthy.

  • Orioles' DL Hall: Won't be ready to start by opener

Manager Brandon Hyde said Thursday that Hall (back) won't be able to get built up enough to start by Opening Day, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com. Hall reported to camp with discomfort on the right side of his lower back and isn't expected to be ready for games until the third week of March, so it's not a surprise that he won't be stretched out enough to start. The plan had been for him to compete for a spot in the Orioles' rotation, although, realistically, he was probably either going to start in the Triple-A Norfolk rotation or big-league bullpen. The club has not yet decided how they will handle Hall's role to begin the campaign, but he's pain-free now and is expected to face hitters soon.

  • Orioles' DL Hall: Nursing back issue

Hall will have a delayed start to spring training due to a lumbar injury, Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports. Hall is still expected to be in the mix for a spot on the Opening Day roster, but the injury obviously doesn't help his chances. The hard-throwing lefty is expected to be used as a starter this spring but might also be an option for the bullpen.
