• Brewers' DL Hall: Bailed out by offense

  Hall escaped with a no-decision in Saturday's 11-5 win over the Orioles, coughing up five runs on eight hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over 3.1 innings. He struck out four. Facing his former team for the first time after being part of the package sent to Milwaukee this offseason for Corbin Burnes, Hall looked more like a sleeper agent as he served up homers to Ryan Mountcastle and Jordan Westburg in the first inning and Adley Rutschman in the third. However, the Brewers' offense kept pace and took the lead for good in the top of the fourth. Hall has had a bumpy conversion to the rotation so far after 28 of his 29 appearances with the O's came out of the bullpen, and through three starts he's stumbled to a 7.11 ERA, 2.13 WHIP and 10:5 K:BB in 12.2 innings. The 25-year-old southpaw lines up to make his next start on the road next weekend in St. Louis.

• Brewers' DL Hall: Allows three runs in loss

  Hall (0-1) took the loss Saturday against the Mariners after he allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out five. Hall pitched well for the most part Saturday, but Seattle struck for three runs on five hits during the third frame. The left-hander got his pitch count up to 90 after throwing just 73 pitches over four innings during his Brewers debut, so it appears he'll have a standard starter's workload going forward. Hall tentatively projects to face his old team next weekend in Baltimore.

Making only his second career big-league start, Hall tossed 45 of 73 pitches for strikes before exiting with the Brewers ahead 5-2, as he fell short of qualifying for the win. The 25-year-old southpaw is being counted on by Milwaukee to fill a rotation spot after being part of the package the team received from Baltimore for Corbin Burnes, but he has a lot to prove before he can be considered a reliable fantasy option. Hall lines up to make his next start at home next weekend against the Mariners.

  Hall started Friday's Cactus League contest and gave up two earned runs over two innings while allowing five hits and posting a 3:1 K:BB. Hall was not as sharp as he was in his two-inning spring debut Sunday in which he did not allow a hit, but he did minimize the damage to some degree. The Brewers have not yet decided which pitchers will break camp in the rotation, but with Hall going two innings in both appearances to date and throwing 42 pitches Friday, it appears he is getting the opportunity to claim one of the open starting spots.

• Brewers' DL Hall: Heading to Milwaukee

Hall was once viewed as a top prospect as a starting pitcher, though he's made only one start in 29 appearances in the majors. He was effective as a reliever in 2023, posting a 3.26 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 19.1 innings for Baltimore after a disrupted offseason caused him to begin the year at less than full strength, though he also covered 49 frames in the minors. However, Hall should have a renewed chance to join a big-league rotation with Milwaukee, and he will likely compete for the role in spring training with the likes of Colin Rea and Joe Ross.

• Orioles' DL Hall: Still viewed as long-term starter

Elias did add, however, that it's possible Hall breaks camp as a reliever, depending on how things shake out in spring training. The plan is to get Hall stretched back out after he spent much of 2023 in a relief role, but it hasn't been determined whether that will happen right away or throughout the course of the upcoming season. All 18 of the southpaw's appearances with Baltimore last season came in relief and he was excellent, posting a 3.26 ERA and 23:5 K:BB over 19.1 innings. Hall, 25, has still yet to reach 100 frames in any of his six professional seasons.

Hall put a runner on base due to an error by Adam Frazier in the sixth inning, and that runner came around to score after Jorge Lopez allowed a home run. Over nine appearances in September, Hall has allowed six runs (five earned) over 7.1 innings. The southpaw has a 4.61 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 17:5 K:BB through 13.2 innings this season.

A groundout allowed the initial runner in the 11th inning to reach third base, but Hall didn't let anyone aboard. The Orioles then walked it off with a Cedric Mullins sacrifice fly in their half of the frame. Hall allowed three runs and failed to record an out Friday versus the Rays, but he's kept runs off the board in four of his last five appearances. The 24-year-old lefty has struggled to a 5.94 ERA in 16.2 career MLB innings despite a 32.9 percent strikeout rate. He recorded a 4.57 ERA in 11 Triple-A starts at the beginning of this season before the Orioles elected to back him off and rebuild his arm strength at the team's spring training complex, as his velocity was down nearly three ticks. He's since returned to strike out 18 batters in 7.2 innings of relief and could be a weapon out of the bullpen down the stretch in Baltimore. A corresponding move has yet to be announced.

There isn't enough time for Hall to get stretched out and become a viable option in the big-league rotation, so it makes sense for Baltimore to get Hall some relief work, as that could be his role for the big club down the stretch and in the postseason. Hall has immense long-term strikeout upside as a starter or as a reliever, as there are few lefties in baseball with his combination of fastball velocity and depth of repertoire -- at times he will show multiple plus offspeed pitches. However, injuries and poor control continue to linger as part of his profile, which is why some evaluators believe he fits best as a reliever long term.

Hall's average fastball velocity at Triple-A was 93.5 mph, down from the 96.2 mph average fastball he showed in the majors last year. He dealt with lower-back discomfort this past winter, which prevented him from lifting weights like he normally does in the offseason, and the back issue lingered into spring training, so he never really had a normal buildup prior to pitching in real games. Hall built up to 98 total innings in 2022 and is sitting at 44.1 innings this season, so he is running out of time to approach the 100-inning mark. The 24-year-old southpaw came into the year with bullpen risk due to his shaky control, and this season's arm-strength-related setback makes a future in the bullpen seem even more likely.
