Player Outlook
In his second MLB season, Alex Faedo showed some signs of progress. After posting a 5.53 ERA and 1.64 WHIP as a rookie in 2022, he lowered those figures to 4.45 and 1.05, respectively. Faedo didn't miss a ton more bats, as his K/9 climbed from 7.38 to just 8.07, but he was able to significantly cut down on the free passes. After posting a 4.19 BB/9 in 2022, the righty lowered that to 2.78. The next step for Faedo is to increase his workload. The 27-year-old has logged a total of just 118.1 innings across his two MLB campaigns. If Faedo can stay in the rotation all year, he could see that number climb upward rapidly, though it's no guarantee he'll stick as a starter. The Tigers should have Matt Manning (foot) and Casey Mize (elbow) rejoining the rotation, and Kenta Maeda also joined the team in the offseason. With the likes of Tarik Skubal and Reese Olson around as well, Faedo may end up on the outside looking in. As a result, his fantasy outlook is a bit murky at this point.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Will make Opening Day roster

Faedo will make the Tigers' Opening Day roster in a bullpen role, Julie Kreuz of MLB.com reports. Faedo pitched well this spring, compiling a 1.35 ERA across 13.1 innings, and it was enough to secure his first Opening Day roster spot in the majors. The one-time first-round pick hasn't found his footing as an MLB starter yet, though he could emerge as an effective reliever if his stuff plays up. However, Faedo likely won't see enough high-leverage work initially to warrant fantasy attention.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Continues strong play

Faedo tossed two scoreless innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins. He struck out two. After allowing two runs over two innings in his first spring appearance back on Feb. 25, Faedo has now logged six straight scoreless innings across three appearances. The righty made 12 starts for the Tigers last season, but with the likes of Kenta Maeda and Jack Flaherty now in the mix, Faedo will likely have to settle for a relief role in 2024. So far, he's making a strong case to have a spot on the Opening Day roster.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Shut down for season

Faedo will miss the rest of the season after undergoing a procedure Wednesday to repair his right middle fingernail, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Faedo underwent a procedure to remove a portion of the same fingernail earlier this season. He landed on the injured list last Tuesday due to a blister on his finger and had a slim chance of returning for the final game of the year, but he will now shift his focus to getting ready for the start of next season. Faedo finishes 2023 with a 4.45 ERA and 1.05 WHIP alongside a 58:20 K:BB through 64.2 innings.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Lands on IL

The Tigers placed Faedo on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right finger blister. Faedo's move to the injured list is retroactive to Sunday, which leaves just enough room for him to return for the final game of the season Oct. 1. In the meantime, Brendan White will come up from Triple-A Toledo to fill Faedo's roster spot.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Shines in pair of relief outings

Faedo has worked out of the Detroit bullpen in his last two appearances Sept. 9 against the White Sox and Wednesday against the Reds, covering five scoreless innings while striking out six and allowing just one hit and two walks. Faedo has made just one of his four appearances in September as a starter, though the Tigers aren't yet dropping the right-hander from the rotation. Though he excelled in long relief of Tarik Skubal and Eduardo Rodriguez his last two times out, Faedo will likely end up serving as more of a bulk reliever Tuesday against the Dodgers. Miguel Diaz is slated to open the game and pitch an inning or two, and since he'll be available on five days' rest, Faedo looks like the most logical choice to serve as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Doesn't last long in start

Faedo allowed one run on three hits across 2.2 innings and didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Yankees. He walked one and struck out four. Faedo was actually fairly effective after allowing a leadoff home run to DJ LeMahieu, but the righty was limited to 40 pitches in his first start in nine days. The Tigers had said Faedo was slated for a multi-inning relief role down the stretch, but he's apparently still in the mix for some spot starts, with his next one potentially set for Sunday against the White Sox. Due to his middling performance so far and lack of a definitive rotation role, the 27-year-old can probably be avoided in most fantasy formats for now.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Starting on Tuesday

Faedo will start for the Tigers on Tuesday against the Yankees, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. We're less than a week removed from the Tigers saying Faedo would be used in a multi-inning relief role for a while, but they've evidently already reversed course. Faedo has put up a 4.89 ERA over 12 appearances (11 starts) for Detroit this season. With Faedo getting the start, it could be Joey Wentz shifting to relief.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Slated for multi-inning relief role

Faedo will be used in a multi-inning relief role with the Tigers for the time being, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. It's possible Faedo will get a start or two in September if the situation dictates it, but for now the Tigers will see how he fares in a multi-inning bullpen role. He and Joey Wentz could piggyback for some outings in the coming weeks. Faedo holds a 4.98 ERA over 11 starts for Detroit this season.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Shaky command in loss

Faedo (2-5) took the loss Sunday against the Astros after allowing three runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out two in 4.2 innings. Faedo actually pitched well in comparison to who followed him as the Tigers wound up losing 17-4 with 14 of those runs coming in the final three innings. The 27-year-old surrendered a two-run blast to Kyle Tucker in the third and two singles and two walks plated another run for the Astros in the fourth. Faedo was unable to secure a win in any of his four outings in August and only lasted five innings twice, but he's topped 90 pitches in each of his last two starts and will look to bounce back in a matchup with the White Sox his next time out.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Goes 4.2 innings in return

Faedo did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings against the Twins. He struck out five. All the damage against Faedo came in the third inning on homers by Carlos Correa and Joey Gallo. The 27-year-old right-hander was solid otherwise, though he'd depart in the fifth inning after throwing 85 pitches. Overall, Faedo is 2-4 this season with a 5.80 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 35:10 K:BB across eight starts (40.1 innings). He figures to stay in the rotation following Michael Lorenzen's trade to Philadelphia. Faedo's next start is tentatively lined up as a rematch with the Twins on the road.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Recalled, likely starting Wednesday

Detroit recalled Faedo from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday. Faedo looks poised to slot into the Tigers' starting rotation Wednesday against the Twins. The 27-year-old right-hander has struggled to a 5.80 ERA in 35.2 innings (seven starts) this season at the major-league level and makes for a risky fantasy streaming option.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Sent back to Triple-A

The Tigers optioned Faedo to Triple-A Toledo on Monday. Though he was called up from Toledo on Sunday to make what amounted to a spot start versus the Padres, Faedo continued to make a case for a more permanent place in the Detroit rotation. Faedo blanked the Padres over six innings while issuing four walks and allowing one hit, lowering his WHIP to 1.04 through seven starts in the big leagues this season. While the stellar performance wasn't enough for Faedo to stick around in Detroit, he'll likely be first in line for a promotion if the Tigers lose another starter to the injured list or if rookie Reese Olson's struggles in his most recent start carry over to his upcoming outings.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Scheduled for Sunday's start

Faedo will be recalled to start Sunday's game against San Diego, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Faedo has struggled to a 6.98 ERA in six big-league starts this season, though his ERA estimators -- in particular his 3.92 SIERA -- tell a different story. His combination of an average strikeout rate (23.0 percent) and an excellent walk rate (3.3 percent) should in theory lead to better results in the future, though it's unclear whether he'll get the chance to remain in the rotation for more than one start.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Reinstated from IL

Faedo (finger) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Friday. Faedo will be back in Detroit's rotation for the first time since suffering a right middle fingernail injury in late May. The right-hander has made five starts in 2023, posting a 5.54 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with 26 strikeouts over 26 innings. If he can control the long ball -- he's served up six homers this year -- positive regression should be in store for Faedo's ERA.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Rejoining rotation Friday

Faedo (finger) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Friday against the Blue Jays, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Faedo has been sidelined since late May following a procedure to remove his right middle fingernail but is ready to roll after one rehab start. He didn't pitch well in that rehab outing, yielding four runs on six hits and a walk over 3.1 innings. He also threw only 57 pitches and that, combined with his lengthy absence, likely means a truncated workload Friday.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Making rehab start Sunday

Faedo (finger) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Sunday will mark Faedo's first rehab start since landing on the injured list June 3 due to finger problems. He was originally scheduled to pitch Tuesday with High-A West Michigan, but the game was cancelled due to poor air quality in the area, and the right-hander threw a three-inning sim game instead. If the Tigers want Faedo to make multiple rehab starts, he would rejoin the rotation after the All-Star break, but it's not clear if there will be room for him at that point with Tarik Skubal (elbow) and Eduardo Rodriguez (finger) also nearing returns.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Set for rehab assignment

Faedo (finger) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with High-A West Michigan, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Faedo has been on the injured list since late May following a procedure to remove his right middle fingernail, so this seems likely to be a multi-outing rehab stint. He had posted an uneven 5.54 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 26:2 K:BB in 26 innings (five starts) for Detroit prior to the IL stint.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Resumes throwing program

Faedo (finger) resumed a throwing program Tuesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. A week ago, Faedo underwent a procedure to remove a fingernail on the middle digit of his right hand. He did some plyometric exercises and light tossing Monday before progressing to playing catch Tuesday. The right-hander will continue to ramp things up and might need a short rehab assignment before rejoining the Tigers' rotation.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Performs light-tossing work

Faedo (finger) took part in plyometric exercises and light tossing Monday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Faedo relayed that he's feeling pain-free again after recently undergoing a procedure to remove a fingernail on the middle digit of his right hand, and he should continue to gradually start ramping up over the next week or so. Considering that Faedo has been on the injured list for just over a week, he likely won't require more than one or two rehab starts or simulated games before the Tigers feel comfortable activating him. However, with Tarik Skubal (elbow) and Matt Manning (foot) both in the midst of rehab assignments and tracking toward similar timeline to return to the big club, it's unclear if Detroit will have room for Faedo in the rotation once he's reinstated.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Undergoes minor procedure

Faedo had a procedure Tuesday which involved a portion of his right middle fingernail being removed, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Faedo had visited a finger specialist, who recommended and performed the minor operation. The right-hander is receiving treatment and will resume a throwing program as symptoms allow. Faedo is eligible to return from the injured list next week, but a timetable for his return is unclear at the moment.
