Player Outlook
After securing a spot in the Yankees' Opening Day rotation last spring, Clarke Schmidt looked poised for an age-27 breakout. He did in some ways rise to the occasion, logging the highest innings total of any Yankees pitcher not named Gerrit Cole, but his ERA (4.64) and WHIP (1.35) were only mediocre and he made it past the sixth inning just three times in 32 starts. Schmidt has a well-rounded four-pitch arsenal, but none of those offerings have proven to be dominant against major-league competition up to this point. He had zero double-digit strikeout games in 2023. Leaving open the possibility that Schmidt could make some tweaks and achieve another level in 2024, he'll be worthy of late-round consideration in most standard fantasy drafts but probably isn't bankable enough yet for a mid-round reach.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Adds pitch to arsenal

Schmidt is throwing a new split-finger changeup this spring, Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. Schmidt threw a changeup on only 1.5 percent of his pitches last season, and when he did go to the offering, batters knocked it around to the tune of a .429 batting average. The right-hander has since worked on changing his grip on the pitch, modeling the adjustment on Blue Jays hurler Kevin Gausman. Of course, the Yankees would be ecstatic if Schmidt's results are anything close to Gausman's, but even if the new offering brings less dramatic improvement it could help the younger hurler bring stability to the back of the team's rotation. Schmidt posted a mediocre 4.64 ERA and 1.35 WHIP along with a 149:46 K:BB last season, but he gave an injury-riddled staff 159 innings, and manager Aaron Boone said in late February that he is guaranteed a spot in New York's Opening Day rotation.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Locked into rotation spot

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that Schmidt is guaranteed a spot in the rotation, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Schmidt made 32 starts (33 appearances) for the Yankees last season, flashing promise but ultimately settling for a pedestrian 4.64 ERA and 149:46 K:BB over 159 innings. The Yanks will be hoping the 28-year-old takes a step forward in 2024 with a full season of big-league starting experience under his belt.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Settles with Yankees

Schmidt signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Yankees on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Schmidt got his first substantial chance as a starter in the majors last season, and he posted an uninspiring 4.64 ERA and 1.35 WHIP across 159 frames. His primary problem was the long ball (1.4 HR/9), though he managed a decent 14.8 K-BB%. That suggests there's some chance for him to see improved results in 2024, assuming he can stick in the rotation.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Another four-inning outing

Schmidt did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing two runs on eight hits over four innings in a 5-2 victory over the Royals. He struck out three without issuing any walks. The 27-year-old hurler limited the damage to a run-scoring single by Nelson Velazquez in the first frame and a Salvador Perez solo homer in the third, but he was removed after just four innings for the second consecutive outing. Schmidt enjoyed a solid 14-start stretch between May 25 and Aug. 8, during which he posted a 6-2 record with a 3.09 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 56:15 K:BB across 70 innings. However, the right-hander faded down the stretch, accumulating a 5.73 ERA and 1.52 WHIP across his final nine starts (44 innings), and he will close out his 2023 campaign with a record of 9-9, a 4.64 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 149:46 K:BB in 159 innings.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Goes just four innings Monday

Schmidt allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three batters over four innings in a no-decision against Arizona on Monday. The only runs Schmidt allowed came on an Alek Thomas double in the first inning. However, after a clean second frame, the right-handed hurler labored in the third and fourth, allowing a pair of runners in each inning. He didn't return for the fifth after having thrown 79 pitches. This was Schmidt's shortest outing since Aug. 14, when he gave up eight runs over 2.1 frames against Atlanta. He figures to have one more start remaining this season, which lines up to come against the Royals over the weekend.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Struggles against Blue Jays

Schmidt (9-9) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks over five innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out one. It's been a tough stretch for Schmidt, who's pitched to a 5.48 ERA over his last four starts (21.1 innings). He was hurt by the home run ball Tuesday -- three of Toronto's runs came on a pair of homers, including a George Springer blast to lead off the game. Overall, Schmidt sports a 4.65 ERA with a 1.33 WHIP and 143:43 K:BB through 30 starts (151 innings) this season. The 27-year-old right-hander will look to get back on track in his next start, currently scheduled for this weekend against Arizona.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Takes no-decision in nightcap

Schmidt allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out three batters over 5.1 innings in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against Boston. Schmidt had to wait awhile to make this start -- it was originally scheduled for Monday but got pushed back due to a pair of rainouts. He fell behind 2-0 in the first frame but recovered enough to last 5.1 innings and depart with a lead, though he had to ultimately settle for a no-decision. Schmidt gave up exactly three earned runs for his third straight start, though this was arguably the least impressive of that trio as he struck out just three batters compared to a combined 13 across the other two. Barring any more weather issues, he's set to face Toronto at home next week in his next scheduled start.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Notches ninth victory

Schmidt (9-8) earned the win over Detroit on Wednesday, allowing three runs on five hits and no walks while striking out six batters over 6.1 innings. Schmidt gave up a run on two hits in the first inning, then rolled through the following five frames, at one point retiring 16 straight hitters. The right-hander had his final line tarnished a bit during the seventh, when he gave up three hits and two runs while retiring just one batter, but he was still able to finish with a quality start and a win. Schmidt came into the contest without a victory over his previous four appearances, a span during which he posted a 6.52 ERA and 1.66 WHIP over 19.1 innings. In his first full season as a starter, he's posted a 4.54 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 139:38 K:BB across 140.2 frames.

Schmidt tossed 4.2 innings in a no-decision against Detroit on Thursday, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven batters. Schmidt was solid through four frames, holding the Tigers scoreless while yielding just two hits. The right-hander couldn't keep it going in the fifth, as Zack Short led off the inning with a solo shot and Detroit scored twice more before Schmidt was lifted with two outs. This was just the second time in his past nine starts that Schmidt has failed to complete five innings, and he now has a 4.56 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 133:38 K:BB over 134.1 frames on the season.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Tough-luck loss

Schmidt (8-8) took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits over 6.2 innings against the Rays. He struck out five without issuing a walk. Two of the three runs charged to Schmidt were unearned and the Yankees' offense didn't provide any run support, resulting in an unfortunate loss for the 27-year-old. Aside from a bad outing against Atlanta on Aug. 14, Schmidt has been impressive since the All-Star break, posting a 4-1 record with a 3.20 ERA and 0.97 WHIP across 39.1 innings in his other seven second-half starts. The right-handed hurler is currently slated to face Detroit on the road next week.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Tagged for eight runs in loss

Schmidt (8-7) took the loss Monday, allowing eight runs on nine hits and two walks over 2.1 innings in an 11-3 defeat against Atlanta. He struck out three. Schmidt, who had held opponents to three runs or fewer in his last 15 starts, was the latest victim of Atlanta's relentless lineup. The 27-year-old right-hander allowed a season-high eight runs on nine hits while recording just seven outs. Schmidt's ERA is up to 4.76 with a 1.36 WHIP and 113:33 K:BB across 24 starts (117.1 innings) this season. He'll look to rebound in his next outing, currently scheduled for this weekend against Boston.

Schmidt (8-6) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk over 5.1 innings against the White Sox. He struck out seven. Schmidt picked up his sixth win in his last eight appearances and has now gone 11 straight starts without taking a loss. Despite allowing just four hits and fanning seven batters, Schmidt fell two outs shy of a quality start and was pulled at 88 pitches. His lone blemish on the day came on a solo homer by Andrew Benintendi, the sixth long ball Schmidt has allowed in as many appearances. Tuesday's outing also marked his 14th consecutive start allowing three or fewer runs, a streak that dates back to May 14. The 27-year-old is expected to take the mound against the Marlins this weekend.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Snares another win

Schmidt (7-6) earned the win Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over five innings against Baltimore. He struck out two. Schmidt added another tally to the win column Saturday, marking his fifth victory in his last six appearances and extending his streak without a loss to nine starts. Though the right-hander hasn't had an outstanding season, he's been a rock-solid arm in the back end of the Yankees rotation, having allowed three or fewer runs in every start dating back to May 14. During that stretch (64.2 innings), Schmidt owns a 3.20 ERA with a 51:15 K:BB. He's tentatively scheduled for a home matchup against the Astros for his next start.

Schmidt (6-6) allowed three earned runs on five hits and one walk over 5.2 innings Friday in the Yankees' win over the Royals. He struck out two. Schmidt got himself into trouble in what became a three-run fourth inning for Kansas City, but he bounced back and stuck around long enough to quality for the win. Working as a locked-in member of the Yankees' major-league rotation for the first time in his career, the 27-year-old holds a 4.33 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 97:28 K:BB through 99.2 frames this season. He lines up to face the division-rival Orioles in Baltimore next time out.

He hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his last 11 appearances, providing steady pitching after a rough start to the season. Schmidt has a 4.31 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 95:27 K:BB through 94 innings this year. He's projected for a favorable home matchup against the Royals next week.

However, the Yankees would retake the lead in the bottom half of the frame, setting up Schmidt for the win. The 27-year-old Schmidt has pitched to a 2.85 ERA over his last nine starts (47.1 innings). Overall, he sports a 4.43 ERA with a 1.40 WHIP and 86:26 K:BB through 18 starts (87.1 innings) this season.

Schmidt did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over 4.2 innings against Boston. He struck out three. Schmidt was solid through his first four innings, working around traffic to hold Boston off the board. However, he'd surrender two runs in the fifth before the Yankees turned to the bullpen. After posting an ugly 6.30 ERA through nine outings, Schmidt has registered a 2.33 ERA over his last five starts. He's lowered his season mark to 4.70 next to a 70:19 K:BB, though he's 2-6 and hasn't earned a win since May 19. Schmidt is next lined up for a rematch with the Red Sox in Boston.
